Megaesophagus - Bailey Chair

- This dog, named Thor, has a rare disease called, megaesophagus, a condition in which the esophagus is enlarged and won’t push food down to the stomach. I built this lifesaving chair to help my dog eat. In the video you will see what I feed him, how I feed him, and how I made my Bailey chair for Thor.

UPDATE: Unfortunately my companion Thor passed away on June 8, 2019. Thanks to this chair I was able to keep him around for as long as I could. My hopes are that this video may help your own family member have a better life. Thank you all for watching.
Sorry to hear that mate you gave him the best chance. My German shepherd pup has ME I built her a chair too, I hope we can give her a good long life. Chin up bro get another pup it helps with the hurt that's what I done
@@wullymoore4006 Thank you for the kind words. I miss Thor everyday. That is great that you built your pup a chair! I read that so many people euthanize an animal when they are diagnosed with ME. I know I loved every extra moment I was able to gain with Thor. All the best to you and your companion!!

So sorry for your loss and thank you for your video. My dog was a victim of horrible vet malpractice. The vet removed her entire soft palate, and my dog developed esophagus dysmotility. I am using Bailey's chair. Thanks for your video

She eats in a sitting position but runs away to play right after and it was all good until she started regurgitation again so this will keep her putt for a while and let gravity help in the long run

All the best to you and your new family member. Im so glad you had a vet that was able to diagnose. We had to get to a specialist to find out what was going on. What we learned through our journey with Thor is that his tastes and wants did change from time to time... so we would just experiment and find what he wanted. Great job, Dad! Our rescue just took in a very young dog with mega-e and trained her to use a bailey chair. I'm going to share your video for folks who dont know what that is. The gelatin is a great idea. I can tell your boy truly loves you💯💖
So sorry for your loss. Great chair and great effort to help Thor. For those that watch this brilliant video I had two Dalmatian pups in the same litter with ME. Both had varying degrees of Me but I decided against vets recommendation not to have them put to sleep - it was my problem.
Anyway, one lived for six months sadly the other is still here at six years old. She is clever and feeds vertical on here own then goes out into the garden and stands vertically for 10 mins to let her grub go down - by the way I feed raw.
Now I have tried baring ways of dealing with this and there is not one straight or best way.Moshe has now stopped getting up on her own after feeding and hence my intention now to make a Bailey chair.
Now one thing I have found that works particularly well is to feed really small amounts and regularly. Typically she is eating two pounds of meat a day so what I am now doing is to break it up into small golf ballish size pieces - maybe a little smaller and feed this, broken down yet again each hour and this seems to work well. You are are right to restrict water ingress - this makes them sick. I have not tried the jello mix but will take that one on board and try it.
We try everything for our dogs and this mans devotion to dear old Thor proves it - good for you matey for the Uk.
My boxer was diagnosed with Mega-esophagus today. Thanks for addressing the joint problems with you dog. My dog will need this added support too!

Mi perrita tuvo 6 cachorros, y me quedé con 2 hembritas, una de ellas hace 3 meses le diagnosticaron megaesofago, y siempre le daba de comer parada, y la mantenía de pie al rededor de 20 minutos, pero aún así regresaba toda la comida, hasta el agua, y estaba muy flaquita, de pronto empezó a tener tipo debilidad en las piernas, ( probablemente por la desnutrición que le diagnosticaron, debido a vomitaba incluso lo que había comido un día antes) hace una semana mi novio le fabrico su sillita, y aunque aún no se acostumbra allí vamos. Espero mi bella Then me acompañe muchos años, al igual que Thorcito a usted, era un perrito hermoso, imagino cuánto lo debe extrañar. :(

My 12 yo lab was diagnosed with this today. He has a list of problems including hypothyroidism and nerve issues in his back feet/legs. I will be constructing one of these. I'm so happy your video showed an older dog using this chair. Thank you!

Im very sorry to here about your dogs passing. Theres no trying to even begin to believe any amount of consoling the loss of a family member and best freind. I just wanted to thank you for your guidance and time taken to help those of us that have been going through this unusually handicap. Its been a tough road just diagnosing the condition. Knowing the difference between regurgitating and vomitting . My dog Mug (on account of his "mug", if you seen him youd understand better!) Has had his share of being on his way out over this being in the ER getting CPR due to basically drowning over this without ever comming to a definitive diagnosis because of a deformed trachea he was dealing with before the fact. I wish there was more people like you that take their time out to help people and their companions in their quests on trying to find a way to save our faithful friends and return that unconditional love. Its so hard to look into there eyes of distress as they look to you for help with this long suffering and seemingly helpless situation. I have hope for my Lil buddy now and your little video especially with the food and how to make it at home really helps. Some of us arent well off. If I havent said it already THANK YOU!

This is helping us and our happy as a puppy 14 year old lab. He's got bad hips, we can get him to sit but my gosh I don't want to bust up his legs. We tried the couch, but it's hard to keep the 15 mins sitting and his spine correct. I am going to build something. I needed this example of an older dog, so thank you so much.

I lost my 18 yr old rat terrier as well In 2019. He was dead blind one eye and hacked a cough like a smoker but I loved him so much. One day he went out to potty, escaped the back yard and I never saw him again😭
I am so sorry to see that Thor passed away. I appreciate this video , my 10 year old Rottie has recently been diagnosed with megaesophagus and she also has bad hips. I am trying to figure out how to create something for her that will help too.

Thank you so mych for your video. My 1st Sheppard had ME. It came on slow at 1st. Vet at the time thought it was allergies to his food / plasti dish. Of course it got worse down the road. He qas finally diagnosed at 8. He was a big boy but was always thin. 4 years ago we got a mix rescue pup. She couldn't keep anything down. She was dehydrated a few times and had to get fluid injections. Of course I was afraid she had ME. My new vet told me that a dog with ME doesnt have the usual heaving before regurgitate, it just blurts out. Thankfully it turned out she just couldn't digest most dog foods. She needed a hydrolyzed food.
The reason I'm watching your video now is that I have a new German Sheppard pup that I assume has ME and want to get going with a chair for him. I didn't know anything about the Bailey chair with my 1st dog. At this time my pup is
17 weeks and 37 lbs so he's putting on the weight. We are hoping for a long and healthy life! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you for sharing this. Our 12yo boxer has mega -e and problems sitting due to aging joints and fused vertebrae. Your video is the only one I’ve found for an older larger dog with hip and leg problems. We’ve held off on a Bailey Chair due to his issues but it was good to see Thor use a Bailey style chair and be ok with it. Going to try your homemade version.... thank you for sharing. Tho disease is so unknown and there are so many dogs out there surviving with it. ( praying paws for Thor and successful feeding in his future. )

Thanks for this, our dog has a problem in his throat and will need a Baily Chair for a week or 2 (hopefully). Just collecting the bits to assemble the chair this afternoon. Ours is a puppy so heaven knows how we'll get him to stay still for 30min after eating.
I admire you for the care you take of your dog. That's devotion. I do so with my 14 yo boxer. How many times a day do you feed him? besides the gelatin, do you give him water also? and if yes, how? using the bailey chair as well? Hope you answer. Wish you and your dog all the best
