These hardy rhododendron cultivars grow on an ancient shoreline of Lake Erie near the current one, where the well-draining sandy soil and moderate spring temperatures set these hybrids up for success. While these rhododendrons thrive in this microclimate near Lake Erie, they would struggle to grow in the heavy clay-derived soils only a few miles inland.
