    Thank you so much for this video! I love flower arrangements all my life! I’ve done 3 weddings, bridal showers and countless birthdays and other occasions and I’ve always just did my research and relied on imagination but I’ve never taken any flower arrangement class ever before except attend an Ikebana tutorial class. I’m doing a presentation next week to show some basic arrangements and I came across this video. I love watching you! I love the way you teach! Someday, I’ll join your class for real. This vlog gave me so much info that I never learned before and will definitely share during my presentation. Thank you again!!

    My beverage of choice was a glass of cold milk to eat w/ my muffin and jam! Enjoyed your class so much. Many years ago a friend brought a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers to a social that were attending. It was a big and beautiful bouquet. After the meeting I asked her about it. I thought she surely must have spent a lot of money on it, of which she had very little. She said she got the flowers out of the dumpster behind the flower shop and took them home, and went thru the bone by one to make the flowers look lovely once again. I didn’t know what she did, but she must have known. Just some tender loving care! That was probably 35 years ago. Shocking…..but the centerpiece for the table was more than lovely. Your hydrangea reminded me of that experience!

      A glass of cold milk with a muffin and jam sounds so delicious, Anne! That's a superb way to enjoy Flower School Live. Thank you for sharing that story about your friend. Sometimes you can bring flowers back to life if you treat them right and process them well. It sounds like she put a lot of effort into doing that and the reward was that big beautiful bouquet that she brought to the social. We are happy you chose to spend some time with us to learn more about fresh flower care and handling. It's the best way to insure that your flowers are always fresh and gorgeous for your floral designs. We hope that you will spend some time with us again, perhaps on the Live show, which airs on Wednesdays at 3:00 pm Pacific Time. If that time doesn't work for you, we'll always be here on replay too. Wishing you a lovely and tranquil week and hopefully more delightful muffins with jam too!

    So many times I've gotten arrangements (I'm from a large family, I've had major loss this year) with the things you showed us NOT DONE! Now, I know how to make things last longer when they come home...I have alum, I have bleach, I have flower food...OH< and the florist didn't send any packets the last few years...so I can make my own 'live' flowers last longer...wish I'd known this in March...my husband's flowers looked wilted when I got them and went downhill from there. Blessings!

    The wholesaler I use recommended using the bleach in the bucket method for Limonium as well! (Got some that stunk up the box/my car beyond belief... Had to put it in the bathroom with the fan running at my office it was so bad!)

      That's a marvelous story, MesmrEwe! Yes, it does have a unique odor that isn't always appealing. Bleach in the bucket is an interesting way to address that and we hope it works well for you. Hello this is Andrea… thank you so very much for sharing… I have learned so much. BTW, what flowers are best to be kept in the cooler vs. Outside at room temperature? (Room temperature with ac) example I was told that Lisianthus does not like the cooler…. Thanks in advance, Andrea.

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  2 роки тому +1

      That's a superb question, Andrea! Tropical flowers are generally not happy in the cooler because it is too chilly for them. Most other flowers do well in the cooler because it keeps them fresh until you need them. Just make sure the temperature isn't too low so that you don't freeze your flowers. Lisianthus prefers a slightly higher temperature but you can place it in the cooler when needed. We hope this an enlightening hour for you in regards to fresh flower care and handling. Thanks so much for joining us today and we look forward to seeing you soon. Have a splendid week whatever you choose to do!

    Hardware cloth comes in 1/4" to 1/2" squares that are much more sturdy than chicken wire, and can be cut to the size of any container. Works well for regular or mini sizes of gerberas!

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  2 роки тому

      That's a brilliant idea, Sunshine! Hardware cloth is an excellent choice for an armature in floral design. Thank you very much for sharing it with us, particularly the part about using it for Gerbera daisies. We're so glad you took some time to watch Flower School Live, and we hope that you will join us again soon when you find the time. Wishing you a most delightful weekend and some special time enjoying flowers!

    If you don’t have a rack to suspend your gerberas in order to get the stem straight you can easily replace it with chicken wire on top of the water bucket instead!

      That's a brilliant suggestion, Mozar, and we are so grateful for it! Thank you for sharing that and for taking the time to watch our latest Flower School Live about fresh flower care and handling. You are absolutely right in that the goal is to use gravity to help straighten the stems of the Gerbera daisies. Your idea is another excellent way to achieve that with materials that you already may have on hand. I really enjoy you on UA-cam. I’m just getting involved with flowers at church, though I especially like working with greenery. My question concerns the prepping of them all, greenery and flowers. I have used a little Listerine in my water and everything seems to last a long time. What are your thoughts about that?

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  2 роки тому

      That's an excellent question, Phyllis! Many new designers use home remedies to keep their flowers fresh longer, but we prefer commercial flower food because it is specially designed to do just that. The primary ingredients in it include a sugar which provides nourishment for the cut flowers, a biocide which inhibits the growth of fungi and bacteria, and an acidifier, which lowers the pH of the water. It's a proven way to insure that your flowers will always be fresh and beautiful. We do have it available on our website here: www.floraldesigninstitute.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_17&products_id=209

    Do you but water when you put leather in a sealed tub after dipping in pinky sparkle

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  Рік тому

      That's an interesting question, Diana! As Leanne mentioned on the show, she dips the leather fern in Pixie Sparkle and lets it dry. Then she places it into a plastic bag or a plastic tote that is air tight and places it into the cooler. This method seems to keep the ferns fresh for a longer time. The best way to find out if it works for you is to experiment with a small amount and keep a journal about how it goes. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch our show. That's an interesting question and a big one, Joaquin! There are so many aspects to it, but probably the best place to start is with your floral education. There is so much to learn about flowers and floral design and we can help you do that. Are you starting your own business or working for someone else? The business side of the floral industry is very important and we have a playlist all about that topic: ua-cam.com/play/PLJbJF6YZAYyLFYFYDMFU-OYGtk9zleFhb.html Another aspect is learning about the flowers themselves, and this video you watched is a good place to start. Would Crowing Glory work in place of Bleach?

    Why is Dahlia not dipped on the water before putting on boing water? You did it with hydrangea.

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  2 роки тому +2

      That's an excellent question, Ortencia! Dahlias and hydrangeas are very different flowers and have to be handled differently. Hydrangeas are thirsty flowers and need a lot of water to be fresh and beautiful. Leanne's technique was used to revive one when it was a bit worn out. Dahlias have stems that are like straws (they are hollow) and the hot water helps them to pull water up into the stem. That's why Leanne showed so many different techniques yesterday - different flowers want different treatments. Thank you very much for watching our show today. We hope you enjoyed it and will join us again soon. All the best to you!

    To smash the end of a hydrangea to drink water and last longer

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  3 місяці тому

      Once upon a time, but we don't do that anymore, Julie! Now we give the hydrangea a fresh cut and dip it in alum (a pickling spice) to get it to drink more water. It really works well and hydrangeas stay fresh and beautiful. Thank you for stopping by to watch our show on fresh flower care and handling. We all know that if you process your flowers well, they will last much longer. We appreciate you watching Live and hope you will visit us again soon whenever you can. Best wishes to you and please have a delightful Easter weekend!

    • @FlowerSchool
      @FlowerSchool  2 місяці тому

      That's an excellent question, Saine! Quick Dip is hydrating solution which is designed increase the uptake of water by fresh flowers. While we don't have a list of the exact ingredients, you can reach out to the Smithers OASIS company to get a product safety sheet which may list the ingredients. Thank you very much for taking the time to watch our show. We would love to host you again soon, and hope you will join us whenever you can. Ms. Leann you have a pretty top on. You should wear more color and not just all black.

      @FlowerSchool  2 роки тому

      That's a lovely compliment, Kent! Thank you very much for it and for joining us for Flower School Live. Black is Leanne's floral design uniform because it is classic and doesn't compete with the beautiful blooms she is sharing on the show. Still we love it when she wears something beautiful and colorful, and she always finds stylish accessories as well. It's marvelous that you could spend some time with us and we do hope you will drop in again soon. Cheers to you and please do take care in these unusual times!

      We are glad you took the time to watch our show, Ingrid! In the earlier days of floral design, that was one technique that was used, but these days woody stems are handled a little differently. It is interesting to see how different flowers and foliage require different kinds of care and handling. Thank you very much for stopping by and we hope that you will join us again for more opportunities to keep our flowers and foliage fresh and beautiful. Wishing you all the best and please take care!
