I like to use 100% cotton ticking with the stripes, it just gives me something to help line up seams. Plus it is so tightly wove it's easy to pull taught when stretching it over the absorbent low loft padding.

Nice idea for using stripes. Ticking has good body and is wide! Thanks

I did that and added a heat resistant layer, 1/2 " twill tape for handles on all 4 sides and to trim the edges on the wood side. Worked great. So, the layering was wood, batting heat fabric then a heavy cotton fabric with the trim and 4 handles.

I was just at a Habitat for Humanity, Restore, looking for door, actually. They have a corner for odd shelf boards, cabinet doors , countertops. Grabbed a piece of plywood, 40X40 , with a Formica finish on top side. Perfect ! ! $1, seriously, $1 LOVE that store! Anyway, with a $1 king sheet from thrift store, folded couple times for thickness, and grandson with staple gun, I have a perfect ironing surface.

I made one of these years ago to put on top of my regular ironing board so I had a bigger, more square ironing surface. I put 1x1 stops on the underside at the front, back and sides of the board so it wouldn't slide off my ironing board. If I needed my regular iron board I would just lift off the big one I made and replace it when I was done. All quilters need this big board.

Hello Matt, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I get such a kick out of you! I didn't have a nice piece of plywood so I used a piece of "oriented strand" board. It wasn't as smooth as plywood so I used a double layer of batting and it worked out just fine. I love this ironing board!! Thank you. Say "Hi" to Donna and all the people who make everything at Jordan Fabrics possible. Jen in NY

These are great table top boards. My husband has made several long ones for me (and friends). We all love ours. I have him make them 22"wide x 60" long. I use Warm n Natural batting. I don't want any polyester in it because it melts. We usually set these long ones on top of our regular ironing boards and sometimes add stays to the underneath side to keep them from sliding off the ironing board. Thanks for the video.

I made one of these ironing boards-great video! I don't have space for a big table, so I am using a Home Depot island that is perfect for my first-class ironing station. I made one also with a scrap from a cabinet shop and a canvas fabric top, mine looks awful too. It's been so long I don't remember how many layers of batting I used but my sides are not wearing. I used some insul bright, which after watching your video must not have been needed. I do like the pretty fabric and like watching you work because you do it right. Thank you.
