    I’m a Senior UX Designer at a global company, and I can confirm that what this guy is saying is unfortunately true. I’ve grown frustrated as my role shifted from hands-on research to simply dragging and dropping elements on the screen. The monotony has made me lose interest in design, and I’m now exploring more exciting opportunities, like game development. I wish luck to those pursuing a career in design today.

    I've been a designer since 2010. Websites, apps, UX, UI, front-end, back-end... I did them all. Every couple of years I save some money and take a break from the industry thinking this was it. But I always come back to it, because it's what I love doing the most. I'm now running a small UX consultancy company and it does well, the secret is to be a bit multi-disciplinary and be a likeable person... and you'll get projects.

      I guess one thing is being the owner of a UX design company where you make the deals directly with the clients, and another one working as an employee not knowing when your gig is going to end? Also, if you started out as a web designer working with Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Flash and also doing coding, those skills will get you more gigs than someone who's only trained to work in the UX/UI design field.

    I have worked in many large companies that have their own big IT projects and entire product ecosystems, and finding a good UI and UX specialist with a understanding of business is very difficult. Yes, things have been simplified for creating simple business websites, and today it is easy to use ready-made templates, but when it comes to unique and complex service startups, not a single AI is capable of designing, testing, and creating the necessary design properly. The truth is that today, to be a designer, it really requires a huge understanding of everything, from management to interacting with AI.

      There are two main problems I think - one is businesses are going towards efficiency at the cost of most of the experience (subpar products are done because its cheaper) and on the other hand most people "teaching" design teach flashy figma animations and not actual, useful skills because it gets more likes.
      There are ways out of it and I'm lucky to have my community do better than the industry average :)

    I think you’re right in this. I started out as a front end developer wanting to be more UX (12 years ago). I succeeded and did some coding but more and more UX - solving big complex problems for intricate systems and apps, it’s been fun, I was even early on this AI era at a company. Then mass layoffs and I’m “out”. Been trying to get “back in” but it’s been a strange journey since fall 2023. Weird interview processes and ghosting companies etc.
    I’ve grown tired of this climate and an over saturated market of “UX:ers”. My plan now is to go back to coding, even something else than UI. Admittedly I’ve refreshed my React and Typescript skills but now also taking Python courses… I really like designing but even more so understanding and solving problems.
    Even thinking of converting into cybersecurity (yeah I know, it’s trendy but I’ve always liked security for some reason, solving problems is key).

    hey you, yes you stop scrolling. i know you want to get out the rat race so you thought about being an ux/ui designer. in order to validate your choice you decide to look for videos for approval. at first you were happy then you saw this video telling why not be a ux. Now your paralyzed and worry until a weeks later he tell you why you should be a ux design. its not his fault his just playing the game. in order for him to keep getting view he you need you to not make decision and constantly consume content . now if i were you, don't do a job that is safe rather become marketable in something you love/passion and go through the good and bad.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  9 місяців тому +2

      Doing stuff you actually enjoy doing is my main message - that's why I tell everyone before they jump into ux to watch a couple of free videos on the actual processes (I have a few playlists on that) and see if it's even for you.
      Honesty is better than pretending it's all sunshine and candy.

    • @TRISCORE
      @TRISCORE 9 місяців тому +1

      which is good, it great you are telling people both the good and bad, as said before it's not your fault you're just playing the system. you're doing what needs to be done to maintain your views regardless if it's out of altruism. the problem lies in how the system or algorithm makes the viewer paralyzed with choice, unable to make a decision FOMO.
      being in that position before, it is a type of hell, (similar to tutorial hell) my advice is that people who are doing it for security/freedom won't last. you wasting your time scrolling because you always hear the good and bad and now you are stuck. the only way to break it is to do something you passion about not what is safe.

  • @codehermano8002

    Let me do a prediction for designers in the next years:
    UX Design won't be the same like today but it can't be removed
    I think the current situation is mainly happening, because we got lazy the past years. Back in time before flat design you needed to have much more understanding to craft components since they where not flat. You had to put more effort into creating something outstanding. But the last couple of years where flat design made it, everyone (even non designers) were able to create simple designs and even with mordern technologys everyone is able to change that design into a real webdesign project. The second thing is the fact that companys all over the world save broken theirselfs by ditching bigger researches and more complex designs going into a direction which leads to using more automated and easier to maintenance tools like net promoter scores for example. And yes even ai will get better and provide even more possabilitys to kick some progresses we have to do as ux designers.
    But should you stop learning UX design nowadays or beeing scared to get kicked out? Definetely not. There is a change happening right now and what youre doing today as a UX Designer won't be what your'e doing in the future. We need to see what companys will need from us in future.
    So from the design part: Since 2024 we are jumping out from the flat design train back to more complicated components which are aiming for more uniqueness, there is a change already happening, so from today all the various tools and possabilitys may wont be used in the future since we are aiming for more stunning and unique components. Same goes for companys. They may want to work cost effective but there are always the big players who start changing directions and tell what's the new way. No company will stay at the same level they are today. And also AI never will be that creative to completely removes our skills.
    And from the technical part: Every year in tech niche is providing new chances, new tools, new software, new technology and new mindblowing possibilitys. So in development when Chatgpt was launched, every developer was scared about their jobs to get replaced. Now in 2024 we can say even if AI is getting better it will assist developers and do boilerplate for us so that we can focus on the real interesting parts in development. It kicks out old tasks and brings in new opportunitys.
    Mayber in the next years it wont be called "Developer" rather than something like "Code Engineer" and AI like chatgpt will be our tool to do our daily busines. And the exact same thing will happen for UX Design. it will be called different in future maybe and there will be a different frame we get used to, but its definetely not wrong to learn the principles and ask yourself what the pain points are from today and how this future frame will look like.

    Yeah, screw this, I'm so done with UX - especially if it's projects that equal designing or improving an SaaS system. Design systems are literally the end of us and a lot of companies in the industrial sector are looking for UX/UX/product designers who can build, maintain and further develop a design system - that then the AI will run and the designer will be looking for a new job.
    I'm considering, as my last hurrah in the design industry, to work as a UX/UI designer in the games industry. I'd rather work overtime for Electronic Arts than drag and drop components from a design system...

    As someone working as a product designer, reason 4 is what I am most concerned about. As you say, having a senior designer working with AI on multiple feature looks like the inevitable future state. The work could even be better because there is one person owning the design that makes sure the design is more aligned and cohesive across all features and touchpoints.
    And even if it’s not better, it will be good enough and a lot cheaper than hiring multiple designers. The best way to be safe in the future is to train to be that designer that works with the AI, so I think it will be important to keep an eye on what (mainly) Figma does with AI and make sure you know how to use it.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  9 місяців тому

      I don't think Figma is the main player here - I believe design tools (in a traditional sense) will be skipped and AI will jump to straight to code. And at the moment AI sucks pretty bad at design it's not useful at all - eventually it will be but I am not sure if design is a priority industry to pursue with AI really (there are other, more relevant ones that will go first). We'll see. At some point AI will definitely be able to do the whole design process.

But I will say though the industries where there's been a lot of opps for more impact (in my case) have been public sector, healthcare, energy, transport and education. I've found that there's still a lot of work happening in these since their UX maturity isn't as strong as something like e-commerce or banking, and there is more reception towards avoiding dark patterns. I've been doing design since 1998 and I think right now is the most transformative time for the industry and it's not really due to AI - mostly business shift towards minimizing the role of design, like a pendulum swinging back from 2009 when everyone suddenly discovered UX.

    • @kvrtman_
      @kvrtman_ 9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, you're right. But honestly, don't get me wrong, I'm not an enemy, your video title is misleading. If these people don't start learning in 2024, it'll be only worse for them cus the industry later on may look way diff than in 2024.
      I agree with you that there's a lot of people looking for a job, and layoffs don't help these newbies to find their first job. That said, if all these corps fired people mostly in the US it doesn't mean all of those former employes would suddenly start looking for a job where I live and other people who watched this vid live. I can't imagine an American looking for a job in a German, Czech , Hong-Kong, Nigerian company or any other company which native currency isn't USD. What I'm trying to say is these Americans are attached to their region and its salary range. They wouldn't earn the same money if they worked for a company which comes from another country and doesn't have branches in places where a strong (in comparison to their local/native currency) currency is (Switzerland, UK, US, Canada, etc.).
      AI - it's still early in my opinion, and numerous PRDs which lack details or which even doesn't exist won't allow the AI to create anything. Add to this NDA, I don't think any company which signed a lot of deals which include NDA, e.g. in the financial or health-care industry, would hand over to a 3rd party really private data. Just nope.
      Maybe if we talk about start-up or companies which are in the red line, they might be interested in this solution.
      Being a Figma component drag and drop operator. That's the daily bread baby! Anyone who thinks being a designer is doing worldwide things, winning awards each year, and basically it's like living a life of DiCaprio in the The Wolf of Wall Street, lives in an illusion. But wait, I can't count how many times I encountered a case when a design system component just didn't work and it meant I had to think how to improve and extended the DS and not bo break similar experience in other places. That's a hard nut to crack. However, I get that when you work for Google or Facebook, then you don't have this opportunity to handle it yourself and basically you have to hand over such an issue to someone else and wait for an outcome.
      On the other hand if you work for smaller companies or studio which are contractors then in most cases you might work on things which have to created from the ground up. What does it mean? It means you won't be a Figma operator, but a designer who has to create the UI and UX, and convert it into a design system. In other words you'll be living of a life of a designer who can show off with skills by choosing and setting fonts, colors, corner radius, padding, etc.
      Cutting costs and looking for cookie cutter solutions? Sounds like my daily bread, but it's my responsibility to provide cheap solutions. I don't care if my design is overwhelming, full of bells, and whistles if it can't be coded easily. That's the difference between real life situations and dribbblism. I've never seen anyone who was stubborn to implement something unscalable, often with a poor UX, with too much redundant things like gradients, elevations, glassmorphism and stuff. There was no business value in it.
      The only reason I decided to add this lengthy comment is that my friend who started his learning journey watched this vid and was both pissed off and sad, and I see a lot of people who are thanking for this vid, but nobody who decided to talk about it. I'm not looking for an attention, I just want make a kinda correction cus things are not black and white, and have at least 50 shades of gray (ba dum tsss, daddy joke, I know).

    It's a career you gotta roll with the punches or your not gonna make it out with your sanity that's for sure. I had a very respected professor in design school tell me he didn't think he would make it in the real design world. After 15 years in I understand what he was talking about now. But I doubt the grass is greener in most other jobs.

    Your narrative seems to be applicable to any IT profession in 2024, from QA to developers. The point is the same. The IT industry is undergoing permanent changes and you can forget about vanilla IT. Competition grows with it, demands grow, salaries fall, and not only designers are fired. It seems that a newcomer and not only will have to make much more effort. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  5 місяців тому

      Possibly. I see it a bit with devs too but I don't follow every part of the tech industry. The changes I still believe were started by Elon firing 90% of Twitter workforce and still making it "operate" despite people saying it will fail with so few people. That pushed all other businesses to optimize too.

    I started learning UI/UX Design for about 4-5 months ago. I don't have any design background, or any IT background. I had my degree in commerce and It wasn't a field I wanted to work in. So I wanted to change my career and I came to know about UI UX. And as I started learning about it, I Find it very interesting and now I know that this is exactly the field I want to build my Career in. What is your advice for me and people like me. Do I need to go after a degree in order to become a UX designer or Is it better if I Study my own. Since I'm now 25 years old. If i was to be a self taught designer, where should I start and what are the basics things you suggest that I should learn ?

      I have a pinned video on this channel's page that talks about the best paths. I think 99% of the time it's better to self-learn than do a degree as they're often outdated in terms of curriculums.

      I think unless you live in a 3rd world country and have WiFi and zero living expenses, don’t be a ux designer. Because your competition has basically zero living expenses. Go blue collar do something in your community.

      Not necessarily frontend. What you can start with is what I mention in the second part of this video (and a full guide coming in February) - start doing cheap freelance and free work for non-profits.
      Build up a portfolio of REAL projects that exists and suddenly it's a lot easier to get hired.

    Bro everything I think about doing seems doomed. Wanna be a web designer? It's not worth it anymore. What about being a developer? Don't even bother, AI will replace you soon, there's no time anymore. Came up with the idea of being a designer? There's no place anymore. How can one decide what career path to follow if everything will be soon replaced by AI?

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  8 місяців тому

      It is not. And AI is not "taking over" most industries - it's actually of lower quality than most people think. I'm releasing a second part of this video on Monday talking about ways around these 5 points.

  • @giovannigallant6210

    Everyone is afraid of AI. Should embrace it as it means products will be shipped faster. Like for example when email replaced trad mail. Mail would take days to reach the person, now it takes seconds. Mail is still there just in a different form. Im a dev too and AI is pretty bad at alot of things especially at coding, alot of bugs. Design too i did something in photoshop the other day, used generative AI and it was way off. Look people appreciate convenience and how you make their lives easier so to ship products quicker with the help of AI is a game changer. Plus robots dont pay tax so the governments would have a huge say in the future of AI.
    AI is trained on data, existing data. Now will it come up with something groundbreaking? Hell no, it will only use algorithms based on existing data to generate whatever, and sometimes its completely detached from reaility as well. Everything we see today was created and designed by us. AI can do it faster but not better. You need pschycology in everything. AI is based on precison.
    Also with the introduction AR VR will be a game changer for UI/UX.
    thats my 2cents

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  8 місяців тому +1

      The problem with AI is not about "using these tools" now. It's about a perception shift in businesses thinking they can get away of skipping people and going with AI (either now, as some do with hilariously bad results) or in the near future.
      It's not that "designer using AI" will replace designers who don't use it - eventually everyone sane will use it. It's more about AI replacing the designer completely because current UI design is rooted in drag & dropping entire flows, not real innovation.
      Thank you for the comment, it gives me perspective on how to talk about some of these things in a more clear way in the future!

    Man, I just started my UX UI coaching career - we mainly focus on how to get jobs and how to freelance, rather than learning the design, but after this video, I've got a little disappointed :(

  • @bodeadewole
    @bodeadewole 8 місяців тому

    I respect @MalewiczHype as a great designer but I really think a lot of the points in this video chose to be biased toward the difficulties designers are facing right now in 2024 rather than the tremendous possibilities that have been made available also as a result of all these trends.
    For example, you said AI is replacing frontend developers and I'm yet to see a clear use case for this in a production environment. What I've seen are junior / beginner frontend developers who learned how to take advantage of AI in their development 10x their learning, delivery, and as a result their income.
    But I'm yet to see a non-technical founder or product manager get rid of all or some of their front-end developers and replace them entirely with AI.
    If what you mean by 'front-end developer' is a beginner or junior front-end developer that refuses to take advantage of AI in their development, then maybe you might be right in a few cases but to cast a blanket on all front-end developers being replaceable by AI is a massive stretch that I don't see happening even in a decade.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't mean they're being replaced right now and I don't even mean AI will "do the coding". What I mean is the overall trend on optimising everything will go the route of LESS people because with AI they can now do more work. So it's not replacing A developer, it's probably just getting 2-3 developers fired and the remaining two taking over their jobs.
      Companies are so focused on optimising that I believe it will actually come back to bite them in the behind and quite soon too.
      Also - as a balance I'm finishing a video that shows a positive aspect of these same five things and how to use them to your advantage. We need balance of views and opinions :)

    Dont forget take home assignments and 4 interviews in a row hirign process when competing with 200+ designers for dead end ux job with zero research or seniority to provide guidance or feedback to you.
    Basically in order to get a job in ux as a junior you have to go through higher level of screening and criteria than a heart surgeon or a nasa astronaut, for a position with so low responsibility that almost anyone could do it just from learning ux for 7 days from youtube.
    Thats why I dont look for ux job in a tradional ways. It's nonsense.
    Malewicz is right, beauty is the most important thing you need. I got my first ux/ui job with 0 ux projects in my portfolio, I didnt even knew what design thinking was. I just had 1 branding project, 1 package project, one webdesign and one animation. And i placed everything in one custom website. But it looked fancy like on behance and from there i got my next two ux jobs.
    Case study and home assignments my arse :D
