Such an amazing discussion and a wonderfully kind and inspirational guest - THANK YOU!!! My thought is that anyone acting like “vegan police” is missing the true core of being truly vegan 💝 I appreciate her full view of wearing a secondhand leather apparel or shoes item. For me personally I can’t stomach the thought of wearing my friend, but I totally agree with the environmental friendliness! Can’t wait til it’s easy to find comfy hemp shoes *hippie wanna-be-me*

I love seeing new, thriving vegan businesses, but at the same time I can’t help but have mixed feelings about them considering gentrification and the role that restaurants play. I know this isn’t just a vegan restaurant issue but still when you see trendy stuff popping up in places like Long Beach and the valley it definitely complicates it for me. We vegans have compassion for animals and the planet, what about long time residents and small business owners who are often people of color that get priced out or start to feel less at home in their communities? I’ve lived in Northeast LA my whole life and an a long time vegan, but when I see a new vegan place where my local burger place used to be for decades my heart is heavy.

I got rid of all of my leather when I went vegan 6 years ago and never looked back. I knew that I could jot change the fact that it was created and thought that bit would be better for someone to have them that would use them. I still do have a visceral reaction to them. I understand Nia's point and can respect that works for her. I would just prefer to have fewer, more expensive pairs of shoes. Vegan leather can be created jn more sustainable ways now, from recycled materials, from recyclable materials and leather can be made from mushrooms, pineapple and others.
I am not the vegan police and I do think that people can wear used leather and still do the least harm bit for me, I feel like I neednto lead by example and wearing leather would be me saying that wearing leather is ok which may contribute to the want of more new product? If I buy mushroom leather, they make more mushroom leather?
I wish we had a sugar taco in nola!
