  • What are the ‘rules’ about wearing band shirts? Do you have to listen to the band, or can you wear a band shirt if you just like the design? Also, are they even stylish and do they give off a good look?
Well, it really depends on who you ask but I’m going to share my opinion on the matter in this video.

Great points on how people wear band shirts for lots of valid reasons, they remind me of an experience I had recently. I saw a girl in one of my college classes wearing a Talk Talk shirt with the "Colour of Spring" cover design. That's not a typical band shirt for a young person to wear so I was very curious if she listened to them and asked. She said no, but that her dad was a fan and got her the shirt. I think a family connection like that is another cool reason to wear a band shirt, and it was a good design too. I did recommend that she check out Talk Talk, but in a non-gatekeeping way!

As someone who played drums in multiple bands in high school and now produces music, I think people can do what they want. No one should care. Genuine vintage band tees are a good example of this. Someone might like the way it aged or the fit of it. I wear a lot of Harley Davison tees because I love the graphics and often times the boxy fits they have. My favorite shirt is a Harley shirt because it has my last name on it. However, I haven’t even been on a bike since I was a kid lol.

I agree. I'm a musician and an audiophile, and I think the gatekeeping is obnoxious & embarrassing lol. It's just a shirt. Is it a little awkward when you talk to someone and they have no idea about the band they band they're wearing? Sure, but who cares? It's just clothes man. It's almost as silly as people getting mad when the kids learn about an older artist from tik tok. I'm sure if you ask members of these bands they probably feel more fortunate to even have iconic merch than annoyed that some people wearing it don't know their music.

I’ve owned and worn band shirts since I was in junior high and I’m in the 30s now and don’t plan to stop. It’s part of who I am and what I’m into, so why not express it? There’s also a bit of a thrill knowing I might run into someone who’s also a fan.

When I was in school and I saw somebody wearing Vans Old Skool I knew for a fact that they were a skater. I knew we could immediately talk about it and maybe go and share the hobby together. I understand there is no reason to be mad that everybody is wearing the shoes now but at the same time fashion is also a statement about who you are as a person. It is a great way to express yourself. Vans Old Skool have lost their identity. But the good thing about it is that so many people are wearing great looking shoes now.

I've been on both sides of it. I've approached people I didn't know wearing merch for band I like to chat to them about it and gotten blank stares, but I also had a Minisry of Sound record bag when I was at art school that I picked up used because it was the right shape to fit my big sketchbook in it. If I see someone wearing a band shirt for my favorite bands, then they’ve almost certainly seen them live. Yay being a small indie fan. To be fair, a lot of merch has become a way to show that you share a common interest with others. Wisecrack did a great video on this. I don't think people have to know specific songs, but having an interest in that band seems important. But if people are just wearing Metallica and Nirvana etc., They can keep those and I'll stick with my sub-genres. They're not on ASOS.

  • @Theo-ul8qm

Obviously I agree, let people wear what they want.
Personally I don’t own any band merch, but I do think they can look cool in much the same way any graphic tshirt can.
It is a bit funny for someone to wear a logo as iconic as, say, Nirvana’s, and have no idea who they are, but maybe someone will come up to them on the street and introduce them to their songs 😁

    • @Gnurklesquimp
      @Gnurklesquimp Рік тому

Exactly, that's all it really is, just silly in a lighthearted way when the girl called it ''the metalic print'' (Maybe satire, idk) etc.
It also does hurt a bit to see when they don't double down, and instead pretend they ARE huge fans, but ehh, that's just an insecurity likely caused by these gatekeepers, no need to kick when someone is down.
I used to listen to a lot of Wu Tang and grew up mainly on System of a Down (Don't worry, I'm okay), I don't usually listen to them anymore, but there's also that nostalgic value and the respect I have for them that goes into potentially picking up a shirt, even aside from just liking the design. I'd probably buy a toxicity album all-over print even if it was just the design though, for example.
Then there's the wonderful world of bootleg, maybe the Nirvana smiley with yellow Wu Tang logo's for eyes? Definitely something most would only wear ironically, but I never took it so seriously to begin with anyway.

However I wear football shirts for teams I don’t support, wear palace/supreme etc and don’t skate, wear north face and am not into hiking/outdoorsy stuff at all, wear new balance running trainers and don’t run in them, wear a dive watch that has never went deeper than one metre… The list goes on.

I had a neighbor that would get all the defective tees that Hot Topic didn’t sell, and sell them during garage sale szn for $1 each. I just bought whichever had the cleanest graphics, sometimes I’d listen to the artist if someone came up to me and recommended a couple tracks. So yeah just wear the band tee if you mess with the design, no shame in doing it lol.

I've been a fan of metal music since I was 10 years old. The most recent awkward moment I had was when I had a classmate who wore a Nirvana shirt to school in 2019. Nirvana isn't exactly metal music, but there isn't a vibrant and thriving scene for more abrasive iterations of rock and metal as they do in, say, Japan, USA, and Germany.
Needless to say, I was amused that there was another person wearing band merch and was looking forward to talk about it, so I sat beside the dude and said, "Nice shirt, man. That album (the album "Nevermind" was depicted on his shirt) is pretty cool.". The guy replied, "I don't know, I just like the merch.".
It felt extremely awkward after that that we just ended up sitting quietly for the rest of the class.
I'm thankful the designs of the band shirts I have are great, so they're always easy to pair with my jeans and vest that I sew patches of bands I like on.

I wear merch from time to time, but for me it's more like a collector thing and a way to directly support a favourite middle-scene acts trough buying their merch - shirts or vinyls (most of the time it's both - a vinyl and a corresponding shirt). I'm not always a diehard fan of an artist, sometimes it's just a matter of respect for their impact on the scene, or particular album that I love. I guess because I'm a niche musician myself, I believe that supporting a non-mainstream musicians is a right thing to do for me)
I don't have an interest in any particular trends mb at some point those band ts were somewhat cool, but I'd rather wear a plain Jane white t, than go with a merch of a band or artist I don't like, because it's more like a cultural thing and not just about fashion. But if you wear a band t-shirt because you like the print, I genuinely don't care. I've seen some ACDC and Metallica shirts in Bershka another day, and I don't know if this is an official merch. I wouldn't wear anything which isn't an official band merch, but it's just me. You can wear whatever you want)
EDIT: Wrote this comment early in the video, so yeah, I completely agree with you. Also, Aphex Twin is dope. Love the British IDM scene, specially coming from Warp Records.

I find that the answer is somewhere in the middle. And here is the line that I feel is the right answer. How much is that artist associated with a specific community and not just general pop culture. And there are some exceptions to this rule of course. But with underground genres, band tees have been a signal for the culture to show people who else is in that scene to help find likeminded people. Granted most band shirts that the more “I’m wearing this for fashion” crowd wear are more basic and this doesn’t usually apply to most people. But it feels weird to be wearing a shirt of an artists that is associated with a specific community and it just feels like a weird form of minor cultural appropriation. Like I take much less offense from people wearing a Ramones shirt than I do a Bad Brains shirt. Both are legendary punk bands, but one feels a lot more associated with the culture itself rather than just regular music culture.

Im not big on wearing music merch clothing, in part because it can be associated with a poser trend but i also don't like being judged by strangers as worthy. You get that alot in Hip Hop cliques, not just Metal. I recall in the 80s when Hip Hop started to get popular along with casual sportswear (breakers, scouse casuals, etc), alot of kids wearing Def Jam, Public Enemy, NWA, Run DMC shirts. The big names at the time but if you talked to them about Hip Hop often they didn't know much about it.

I used to have a GF which had a GnR shirt and I was sometimes joking by telling her to name 5 songs. I found it a bit annoying that after some instances of this joke she didn't check out some songs, but the shirt made for a good piece of style. The point you make of wearing for instance sports stuff is a good one. I have some NFL, basketball caps without knowing much about the sport, but I least I checked out some facts about the teams.

I think I grew out of band merch, but at the time it was a thrill to spot someone wearing a tee of a current fave band. Nowadays I'm not so fussed about guitar bands, but I like the idea of artists getting visibility and money from people wearing their logos, whether or not they know who the band is. Sod those Gatekeeper W⚓s.

It has happened with Hip Hop too, big old skool iconic names like Run DMC & Public Enemy in particular, in part because of the music they made but they also had bold graphics. Although the new skool artists in rap today don't really cultivate a clothing brand like the metalheads do. They prefer to wear fashion brands or endorse it through sponsorship.

Of course at the end of the day it’s none of my business what other people wear, i just can’t imagine someone would not be curious about what the artist on his/her shirt sounds like😂 I feel like people should at least try to listen to one song/do some research, and that could be a way to discover some cool artists, too. If the person doesn’t even know the shirt is a band merch (like the metalica girl) then it’s okay though cuz they won’t even be able to tell.

I think the problem was that before the internet blew up in the late 90s punk fashion, skate fashion and band t-shirts were all pretty exclusive to their specific scene so that if you wanted to dress like that you actually had to associate with the people in that culture and now it doesn't really matter which kinda makes it lose its meaning. Back then, the people who wore thrasher shirts and heavy metal shirts were considered outsiders and unfashionable by the popular crowd who wore what was in fashion at that time which is why it's ironic all that is in fashion now. As I get older in my 30s, I care less and less what people wear.

for rock/metal at least, if you're just starting to get into an artist it's fine to wear their merch if you genuinely like them, you don't have to be able to recite every word of every song in reverse chronological order or something ridiculous like that. but if you're just buying a Nirvana hoodie at H&M because it's trendy and you have absolutely no intention on listening to any of their music, then that crosses a line IMO. like for me even if I liked the design of a shirt, if it was an artist that I don't listen to or don't enjoy their music I'm not gonna buy that shirt, because the band shirts I do buy it's because I like them and their music and I want to support them.

I am in my 60's, and don't wear any band shirt to any concert. I was at a Flogging Molly show, for me it was a Violent Femmes show, but so many people were wearing Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Pogues, because that's what's expected. And then I saw this one young guy wearing a Rory Gallagher shirt. I went up to him and told him how amazing was Rory and he said "This is my grandfather's shirt".

One also has to be extremely careful who they have the gall to walk up to and hate-keep… i’m the kind of person that will tell you too GF&SF and two times on Tuesday! If I see your car and it has a sunroof and you’ve made me mad enough I’ll drop a Chicago Sunroof surprise… there are plenty of people that see something cute or fun or exciting to look at and want to wear it well that just okay! It’s called free will & and as long as you’re not spewing some sort of bigotry hate and intentionally trying to harm someone, say like a confederate flag on your hat or shirt that sounds a clear message! Then leave people alone even if you walk up and ask him about the band and they don’t know, you just simply say oh that’s cool. I’m a huge fan. That’s cool that you’re wearing one of their shirts!!! when I turned 50 my GaF button broke off! And each year that goes by I get louder and louder about stomping out stupid… and if I see somebody attacking another person for something that’s stupid you can bet I’m gonna intervene because I’m that person so like I said one should be very careful before they have the audacity to say anything!! you don’t know if you’re poking a bear or not! lol ❤

I have to respectfully disagree with your take on this one Harry. I feel like clothing is an easy way to express yourself and your interest and if you do want to wear a band/artist shirt, why not wear one of the band/artist that you like? Everyone listens to music in some capacity and is a fan of a band/artist so why not support them by buying and wearing their merch? (trust me, Metallica doesn't need more publicity).
You do have a point about how serious this actually needs to be and where we even draw the line (i.e. 'I like 2 songs' vs. 'I listen to everything they have ever made'). But it is fun to talk about as a thought experiment.
Skateboarding merch is a whole different ballgame as you know Harry. Skaters are serious business when it comes to gatekeeping for better or worse.
Anyway, very well put together video Harry - thanks!

You are pretty much saying what I say in the video. The only difference is that if someone wants to wear something then it’s up to that individual. I only wear artists I listen to and like but if someone else wants to wear a t shirt and they have no idea who the artist is then it doesn’t make any difference to me. That’s their choice.
