It is as you said a little different for everybody .. For me it is about the nostalgia .. now when I was a younger man .. I had to complete some comic runs. But now it is mainly about toy colleting from my youth .. Great video .. God bless.
Love this topic . On your livestreams you hear me always bringing up toxic crusaders and killer tomatoes , police academy (cartoon) figures , the tick , the mask (Jim Carrey cartoon figures) I love that odd , slime toxic stuff but some of these are so expensive to get now , if I had more resources . I would dive into all of these and complete them or get close . They all scale well together which I love plus they were a big part of my childhood . Fortunately super 7 did toxic crusaders which was more affordable . But nothing beats vintage . Great video as always could go on and on lol
I'm a Father of 3 so the kids are my priority before anything else. Once I've taken care of all expenses I usually have a little left over that I save up to get something I've been wanting although I can't tell you how many times Ive saved for months to get a figure and finally the day comes when I have enough and we'll need new tires or something else that requires Alot in not all of the savings lol but thats the name of the game. I wouldn't have it any other way honestly because when I do eventually get the figure I've been waiting for and saving up to get it feels so much more earned plus I find if I have to work so hard to get something I really want it and not just a passing interest. Great video guys . It's a topic Alot of collectors don't like to talk about I've found lol hope you guys are well and staying warm. We're getting a ton of snow and ice on the mountain
Interesting points. It's nice to be satisfied with one's collection as there needs to be a stopping point to where free space becomes a concern. I'm an incomplete collector, so I can be happy with just my favorite items in a line, rather than feeling compelled to collect everything. Saves money, time and space! I'll say I'm 99% finished collecting. A trickle is good.
I'm still young, while the thought of one day ending my collecting hobby has crossed my mind, it will be a while before I'm actually "done" collecting. There are lines I have already stopped collecting altogether for different reasons like Star Wars Black Series/Vintage Collection. As you both already know, my collecting focus is anime and those lines are not slowing down or going away any time soon. Excellent discussion video.
When you resort to customs, you gotta start making your own. I've been doing that with Mego for decades. Mold making, casting, sewing, painting, sculpting...
I'm collector-adjacent, so while I don't have the completionist problem, I have an adjacent issue. I like to build playsets, basically. Environments. Things like that. I tend to find figures loose in the wild and imagine they have relationships with figures I already have or know I could find. More like mashing up tv shows and cartoons in my head, getting my peas in my mashed potatos as it were. Then I craft whatever I need to make the idea come to life. Which is fun. But.... then what? I can build a crime-fightibg van or a waterfall house or a flying saucer base and populate it with toy soldiers or Playmobils or Mego Universal Monsters in lots of unlikely combinations. But after I've taken a couple pictures or what have you, what do I *do* with it? It's like an elaborate train layout or a hand-crafted minuter village. The spectacle is creatively satisfying, but i have a small house. I don't have room for huge display pieces. But I don't want to destroy or sell them, either. I build them because I want them myself. So. I just sort of take it easy, I don't start a build without some vague idea of where it will eventually live. I think collecting can be similar. I see basements on YT so choked up with products that you can only see a third of what a there. That's cool, if the collector is a curator or archivist and knows what he has and is satisfied with that. But I think some collectors would prefer to show off a little more. Different reasons to collect give different reasons to take it easy when necessary. I don't know. It's an interesting question.
Space is a major issue. We're lucky in that we have a large bonus room that can accommodate us, but most people don't, and that's important to consider.
I will never be done... I only collect Jason Todd figures! Don't care about the scale, don't care about the brand, don't care about lines... as long as it's Jason Todd ill buy it.
After years of collecting im finally getting rid of tons of stuff. Feels really good. I focus on things where I have a deep connection. All the plastic garbage that was "nice to have" because seen on reviews, instagram, etc must go.
My comic collecting has never stopped. As far as physical, plastic crap, I'm collecting mcfartlane green lantern corps figures. Somebody help me!!💚😛😆❤️
Ok. I'm not a collector, so, ignore at will. 😁 I'd consider any collection I started complete when I had the things I always wanted (or, in a few cases, had and lost). This is part of the reason I'd be loathe to get into collecting - I'd feel like I'd be holding back someone who is more enthusiastic about complete series. I'd really like it if more reproductions were made. Not fully working toys, but nice representations, like the awesome Snake Eyes statue my brother owns. Unless the working reproductions would be different enough to not interfere with those who collect originals.
Great video and topic. I used to collect a lot of lines both vintage and modern and over the last few years i’ve slowed right down and even ended some lines. TMNT, Batman, vintage Smurfs, Babylon 5, Seaquest DSV (completed that one), Star Trek, Ghostbusters and Deadpool have reached the “I have enough” finishing line. I recent sold off 70% of my Star Wars Black Series (only kept the OT stuff) and have put that line in mothballs. Vintage Kenner is still on my radar as is Mad Max (i’ve been a fan since 1980 and a collector since 1993), MOTU, Transformers, Waterworld, Robotech, G.I.Joe Classified (certain characters only), Die-cast from old TV shows like Knight Rider, Starsky & Hutch etc etc and that’s pretty much it these days. Space has become a real in my face issue in recent years so i thank my lucky stars that i’m not an obsessive completist on really expensive lines.
good stuff, i don't think i'll ever stop collecting, i'm probably the slowest collector. When i was younger money was the issue but as i got older space became the problem lol, but i do take breaks to slow down and read or watch the source material of what im collecting (comics, movies, shows etc). stopping to smell the flowers is nice from time to time
I honestly believe a "real collector" is never done. You hear certain collectors say they would love to open a museum, those type are never done. Its in our blood, waaaaay deeper than nostalgic feelings. After buying my life grail (Robotech sdf1 playset) Im collecting damn 1918 tobacco cards now (WHY) just next in line of EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would be nice to open a museum, but then who would go? I've seen it done, and also seen a lack of interest. We've toured the Lunch Box museum here in Georgia, (did a video tour of the place) we were the only ones there. Even the owner wasn't there, we were let in to film!
I'm fairly done other than occasional impulse purchase. The concern is, at some point, yourself or your spouse may one day need assisted care living. And they always go back 5 years into your bank account and assets. And they are known to take everything. So why do we want to continue working and spending so hard to collect things that will be taken away. And if not, your nieces and nephews that never cared suddenly show up to see if they can get free stuff to sell. So, the hard question and realization is one day. If you can only have and keep 5 items, what would they be!? At some point, someone who doesn't care will tear through every collectors stuff with the littlest of care. All the things we looked at with an emotional connection of joy or security will be gone. Been so depressed. Collecting just doesn't seem to be helping anymore 😞 Hopefully, I can find a wave of positivity and snap out of it.
I think about that a lot going to Goodwill, you can tell sometimes when a whole unwanted collection of something turns up, and you just know someone passed away...
I don't think 🤔 many ppl just give up flat...most of the time 🤔 that happens is when someone is dying or having very bad health problems or money 💰 problems...but you maybe right they may just collect a specific thing and then thats it.
Is there any Norwegian Gi-Joe's relatives? Most of the thing I collect has no limits. I like to gather information about collectable things in different genres. Much of the in world item I save for others. I got a hugh digital collection of books, music, arts, comics and much more but I have no space to store physical items anyway. The actual items I collect is miniatures and articulated dolls with fashion and accessories that I need for videos, photos and dioramas and that will never be done. Much that I need and want I craft myself.
Yes, I think it was Norway. They are very unique because the card art had to be redrawn without characters having any weapons, even though they came with weapons. Some kind of weird law about children's toys and advertising.
@@OpenByChance I have to check that out... I knew about Action Team in Germany that you wasn't allowed to sell toys with military content from WW I and forward. Wild West, Adventure and Working figures was released and som UN figures and vehicles.
Ocassionaly on Ebay recently I have seen 1 or 2 of the LJN The Rookies action figures mint on card but it's usually the same one or two figures all the time. The LJN Swat action figures it seems like all I ever find is the Deacon figure mint on card but usually the card is in poor condition. The LJN Emergency! Action figures never seem to be found mint on card especially the John Gage figure although on rare occasions the Roy Desoto figure can be found mint on a damaged card but even that is rarely. Most often these '70's LJN TV character figures are only found loose from package usually in poor broken condition with a missing or broken leg or arm or found with no clothing on them. The Mego figures are more commonly found it just depends on the character and line of figures you are looking for.
@OpenByChance Yes, The only LJN toys that are commonly found these days are their 1982 ET The Extra Terrestrial figures and their Brooke Shields doll and their Michael Jackson doll's. So really just their '80's toys but their '70's items are nearly impossible to find.
I have a FB friend who has a fave movie and he collects every single copy of this movie from every country on every media, like Beta, VHS, DVD and laser disc, even books from every country. remember back then a movie would come out and there was a paper back. i love to see people with that passion.

That's really the key, for a reproduction to be clearly marked so as to not confuse people.
