    A well structured jab on the button can knock a guy out (I've done it in sparring on more than one occasion). IMO, the jab is the most versatile and most important punch in your arsenal to get right. Ranging, setups, punishing...it can do it all.

      Sounds like you're going to hard man, multiple jab-knockouts in sparring.

      @@guird4 Not really. It's more just a convergence of factors which has happened a couple times over a period of 25+ years practicing boxing and other striking arts. I'm also a big guy (6 foot 5 inches), and the ability to exert force versus the ability of a human body to absorb concussive force do not scale linearly with each other (it's one of the key reasons the rate of concussion in pro football players is becoming more common as the average size of an NFL player continues to increase).

    Always great advice from Ritchie Yip but feels like a message on also 'not telegraphing' is missing.

    I'm sure I was taught in boxing to step forward, plant the feet and then jab. Of course at speed it is almost indistinguishable. But that was the principle I thought.

    That is the way Bruce Lee did it he called it a lung punch. He got the idea from french sword fighting

    I have my power hand a little more ahead of my lead and then I twist my hip while I shoot my jab, it was satisfying to watch the last step lol.

      You're going to get knocked out by a nice left hook.

      @@Anfernee.Clarke It doesn't matter. It's not smart to have your rear hand away from your chin.

      @@djbray7 it's a baiting move, every one doesn't fight like Daniel Bray. Never been K.O'd, never been rocked. I'm comfortable with having my hands down some times but I don't always have them down. The right hand is out as a distraction and for leverage and the right hand isn't down to my waist, it's a little bit in front of my chin. I pull my right hand back to guard, push off my back foot with my head off center and the jab connects 50 percent of the time. You would have to be extremely fast to catch me with a punch let alone a *hook* lol 😂

    The jab only works for big men. For smaller lighter people with short arms it does not do any damage. It only hurts. Only big muscle men can make the jab do damage.

      Better that it hurts than having no effect at all.

      The jab worked for me both inside and out of the ring i threw my jab of the rear foot while twisting my upper body. Not pivoting on the lead foot like a conventional boxer i had a good knockout record with my lead hand

    • @goat341

      Jab is perfect for light people with short arms biggest if they are trying to fight someone with longer reach their goal is to get inside of you and become a inside fighter. A jab is good for keeping them at base.

    I know i'm going to take some heat for this, BUT I personally disagree , or at least diverge . I move my lower body first, I plant , then i throw. I model this after Jim Kelley's backfist. This way my hips haven't turned yet, nor have my shoulders so i still have all that kinetic potential without committing to the strike. I'm simple just getting closer and I haven't signaled my opponent with any upper body movement. Once the front foot lands I use the momentum to fire a full power shot from the ground up. more like a lead straight then a jab. It's a bit slower yes, but for me at least, it lands way harder and my application is self defense, not MMA or Boxing so I don't mind sacrificing some speed for power. But that's just me, and what works for my body type (all long arms and torso) and approach. That's what makes the Arts so cool, we adapt based on all these variables.

      You're not wrong, I was taught that there's a triangle
      You have speed, power, and technique. You can only use two.
      Your jab would be more powerful but less speed (given only this single strike and same range)
      I think the video was just 3 ways to have a more proper jab not necessarily the only way to throw a jab. TBH Ritchie looks odd when hes throwing punches lol

  • @guird4
    @guird4 6 років тому

    doesn't a false lead telegraph heavily though?

    • @StuntDill
      @StuntDill 6 років тому

      Depends on context, if its the first jab and not set up then yes it will telegraph, especially if you do it more than once.
      However you can feint the right hand to cock your shoulder back, throw a weak right hand high or low that is just to set up the jab, or slip, etc,
