Hey Andy, been pursuing jazz for over 40 years, trained under Howard Roberts, Joe Diorio, Ron Echette and Howard Alden. I must say the way you lay things out is very reminiscent of the way I was taught at GIT way back in 1979. Your approach to learning a tune is bang on; starting with arpeggiated ideas that follow the chords and embellishing them as you become comfortable. Thanks on behalf of all your followers for giving them the goods on how to approach playing over the changes.
Thank you for the comment John. You've studied with some really fantastic musicians there. Love Howard Alden in particular. I think arpeggios/chord tones are a better route to improvising. Glad you liked the video, best wishes, Andy.
very well done - I would add a very helpful approach, which is to sing the words & feel the feelings of the song .. then sing a word or words that you might say in that situation. You will get new rhythms and tones to play from doing that.
