  • Artist Damien Hirst's new show in Venice is causing controversy.
Ten years in the making, the “Wreck of the Unbelievable” creates a world of supposedly salvaged artefacts.
But some Nigerian artists are taking issue with one of the works.
Al Jazeera’s Charlie Angela reports from Venice.

Are these even made by him? I'd rather celebrate the artists who actually created these statues.

people really need to learn what cultural appropriation is, because it's not when someone from another culture uses something from your culture. being offended by that can come off as kind of xenophobic on your part.

Judson Putnii What are you talking about? That's literally exactly what cultural appropriation is, almost a word for word definition actually lmao

Cultural appropriation is not using influences or parts of other cultures as much as it is stealing them and claiming them as your own. Hirst using all kinds of ancient artistic signs and fully describing them to their responding origins is not appropriation. (in the folder for example it clearly says, this is alike to the aztec calender, this is a statue in Helenic style, this has babylonic influence etc). Saying that he made it without credit would have been wrong. Colonizing another country, finding something and from then on claiming it is your own, would be cultural appropriation. But he makes no such claim.
Giving the context of this expo -treasures from everywhere- it is a bit of a stretch to start accusals of Cultural appropriation.
Ingraining and sharing culture is not bad. Sharing culture is a good thing. It is giving credit where credit is due that makes all the difference, as so often in the art world.

that's a really narrow definition, by that definition most things people call appropriation would be fine. its when something is taken out of its original context or used for a purpose other than what it's intended that i would agree to saying it's been appropriated. but just saying anything being used by another culture is appropriation is obnoxious and low-key xenophobic, like how someone wears hair or clothes for aesthetic reasons.

Feel honored why? Because a white man copied our art? He was probably a descendant of the same British colonists who exploited Nigeria, stole our artworks, and shipped them overseas! Art replication after 800 years. Colonialism first then art imitation

You are really part of the problem with western culture. You maim and kill then you steal the culture. How European of you... Damian Hurst should stand in the sunshine of Mali for a day before he can have others *borrow* the ideas of Africa...
