Continental Airlines - "Golden Dragon Service" with Charlie Chan (Commercial, 1979) ☯

- Here's a commercial for Continental Airlines, with a stewardess (a terminology later replaced with "flight attendant", not to mention "Oriental") (likely Lydia Lei, who was later in "Doctor Detroit" as Jasmine) explaining a new elegant "Golden Dragon Service" that makes stops at Los Angeles as well as Taipei.
She then shows the various cuisine that is served on such flights - and proceeds to serve one of the meals (duck) to Charlie Chan (veteran actor and voice artist Marvin Miller) and Number One Son (Peter Kwong).
(NOTE: This ad preceded by over a year the making of the film "Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen" with Peter Ustinov as the fabled Chinese detective.)
Ending voiceover by Casey Kasem (with the lower-third on the screen advising such flights as "Starting February 1").
"Welcome to the splendors of the Orient."
This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, February 28th 1979 at approximately 7:20pm.

Love the old Charlie Chan movies and books. Got them all. Was great when WGN used to show those and Sherlock Holmes on Sunday afternoon.
Sounds like Casey Kasem doing the VO at the end.
Obviously
I actually heard Kasem in an ad being run over the speakers at a liquor store earlier this week. Kinda caught me off guard.

Yep
That oriental wine was a winner.
Plum wine. The Mogen David of the orient. Twice the sugar and all the alcohol.
79 was the year my son was born wow love the old Charlie Chan movies I have about 15 of his movies
I think that’s Lydia Lei, who played Jasmine in “Doctor Detroit”
Talk about memories!!
Imagine trying to get a commercial made like this in modern times.
CONTINENTAL IS NO MORE, ITS UNITED one could say.😊
Was that number one, or number two son traveling with "Pop"?
Memories.
I thought Sidney Wang would have the kow dung woo fong
@@zombiefulci3301I hope he didn’t find any more blond hairs on the seat back of Mr Charleston!

The only time Charlie Chan was played by an actor of actual Chinese ancestry was in the 70s cartoon The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, where he was voiced by Keye Luke.
Number One Son here MAY be Brian Tochi - kinda looks like him. But I cannot tell who's playing Chan himself. Too much bad makeup.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!
I've got the Chan-thology on dvd 😂
Peter kwong from big trouble in little china is #1 son
Why does it feel like the music sting at the end was edited in later? Doesnt have the same network sound as the rest of the ad.
It is an “Eastern” version of their jingle at the time.
@@chrisw6164 i understand that, but it doesnt have the network 5khz sound on it. so it sounds like it was added live
😆🦆 🍜㊗️✈️

Whats the best Charlie Chan movie
Special entertainment? Do tell
“Oriental” is not a slur and never was.
No doubt but it is an old fashioned term that many don't prefer. Asian is the preferred term.
@@penguin44ca Why would Indians and Chinese ever want to be looked upon under the same “Asian” banner? Or Russians or Koreans, Vietnamese, etc?
@@chrisw6164 Ask someone of those ethnicities
@@chrisw6164 if I asked you to kiss the whitest part of my ass, would that be "racialist"?
@@penguin44caumm ignorance is a wonderful thing isn’t it. Asians use the term ‘Oriental’ today in a lot of context from company names to hotel names. Mandarin Oriental (as one example) is a Hong Kong based company and operates some of the most luxury hotels in the world. No they are not offended. Only western perpetually offended snowflakes get offended.
Marvin Miller as "Charlie Chan".
Thank you! Any ID for number 1 son?
@@FuzzyMemoriesTV Peter Kwong
You're welcome!
Was that Peter Lorrie playing Charlie Chan?
Definitely racist.
