This is an awesome present you're making to people that enjoy the hobby but cannot travel to the other side of the globe to attend this, Ross. A thousand thanks for this video, allowing us around the world a glimpse of the full Adepticon experience. And don't think all the work to capture this extensive footage and edit it in such a comprehensive format is lost on us. That's a massive accomplishment.
Despite what you said at the start, I'm really enjoying the casual travel program nature of this video to show us what it was like - thanks for making it!
Hi Ross, I was indeed at adepticon this year. You may recognize my big goofy mug as the winner of the most coveted, exclusive and highly sought after competition at adepticon known as Deface My Face or as I enjoyed calling it “get head and give head back”. I loved your video, brother. Took me right back to those tables and halls. The Tailspin/Ducktails joke was spot on, and I got the biggest smile again reliving the slayer sword celebration. I’m so excited for next year, and stoked as hell that you’re coming back. My buddies and I will have to take you out for dinner and save you some of your food money so you can get more models next year. Glad to have met you and become buds.
Remember dude, you are now a competition winning painter! just as I am an award winning artist for my Boy Scouts Artist badge! was great to meet you man and you have such a fantastic energy!
I like your video. I was waiting for all the Adepticon Videos to arrive. It's so lovely to see a big convention like this, would love to attend something like this.
I'm new to all this, so thank you and everyone involved for enlightening those who know nothing and providing focus and a desire to proceed, persist and persevere. Greatly appreciated from Down Under
Regarding the portion of the video on Golden Demon, welcome to the world of judging art. No matter how you try to approach it, the judging process is usually trying to quantify something thats subjective. As someone who has judged under IPMS rules on scale models, meaning models that are much more quantifiable than figures because the aim is to make something that looks real, its still a shitshow and theres always going to be people who get quite belligerent until someone sits them down and points out the flaws in their work. I havent judged figures before because i can only imagine how much more difficult it would be.
it's great to have such an insight from someone who has judged these. and from what I saw, it does get down to the nitty gritty of point out flaws. I feel that i was able to spot some on some winning entries where i could not find many on entries that placed lower. But then there's the, but this person clearly applied multiple techniques, versus one technique well. this has more cohesion, this has more contrast. it's not a job I envy, even carrying the bloody things to the shelves is more than my nerves can probably handle.
Hey I appeared 2-3 times here, but especially at the Golden Demon award ceremony! Cool. Thanks for the vid dude. It's nice to relive the crazy experience Adepticon was. 😁
Apologies if I misspoke, I don't mean to seem like I'm discrediting your work. I just didn't believe it was seriously entered as a contender for winning a top-3 place in it's category due to the subject matter. i still loved the model which is why I featured it and spoke of it. and I'm sure even you admit, it's funny.
@FauxHammer I understand. It's definitely not painted in the typical grimdark style but I'd love to see something like this place one day and the only way that'll happen is if more unconventional themes get entered. I worked as hard as I could on that and while it's still miles away from the quality of a slayer sword winner, I'd like to get there someday just the same without compromising on style.
@@SugarCandyMiniatures genuinely I would love this too. As I said your model stood out and it was more fun than many other entries There were others up there that I personally liked more than many of the winners just because it had a style that resonated with me, but as you say, the paint jobbitself was not as you say to GD winner standard. Never the less its great to see a variety of models and I truly wanted to show more of them off in this video because they are all so inspiring.
@FauxHammer yeah there's so much great work out there and I am super fired up for next golden demon! Now I get to compete against my previous entry to try and make something better 😀
First off, I loved hearing about your experience as Adepticon means so much to so many people! Getting a POV from someone different (especially a first time at the event!) is great and you laid out a great mix of things for the event that has many, many, MANY ways to celebrate the hobby(s) featured. I was there this year, my 3rd year attending, and had a blast. I played in two of the Warhammer tournaments (Championships Thursday and Teams GT Saturday and Sunday), entered three pieces into Golden Daemon (my purple coconut crab scheme Barbed Hierodule (big Tyranid Forgeworld monster) shows up at (26:01) (and I show up at the head of the Golden Daemon line at (35:17), wearing my bright green Hobby Goblins team jersey!), and to top it all off, the Tenjin Brushforhire painted and had with him was for me! I got it from him during one of his streams (as for all of lockdown I was working from home and watching Twitch streams, including his!) It's awesome to hear you had such a good time and that you'll try to be back next year (the Deface My Face challenge is 100% on my to-do list for next year haha). Aaron (AC_Miniatures) painted the Slaneesh Daemon Prince at (27:42) KAHA Katarzyna Gorska painted the Hekaton v squid piece at (26:26) and (16:52) and the Dragon with Stormcast vs Daemons diorama at (28:15) Brushforhire painted the Ballerina Guilliman (for project #BrushChaos) at (27:37)
Thanks, this means a lot! good to put a face to a name too! and thanks for clarifying the entries!!! I'm worried so many people want to enter deface my face 2024 - may need more faces and actually have some organisation about it. This year was all just me randomly handing out heads.
Funny thing i was coming back from dublin at the same time to Chicago. I, too, had reservations about the art 72 plane we had to use from Edinburgh to Dublin before going back home. Good to hear you had a good and chaotic time.
I was in the finalists line, right behind the Youngblood gold winner…he showed me pics of his entry on his phone and the blends were so smooth…he said he spent a lot of time glazing. The next generation of painters is gonna be so amazing.
This video really makes me want to attend Adepticon for the miniature emphasis. I attend Gen Con periodically (which is humongous) but there seem to be limited miniature painting-related vendors. Thanks for this!
27:15 Fiver's Strawberry Sundae Knight isn't a joke entry, but a representation of their unique style. Fiver paints fantastic candy and sweet-themed miniatures and the creativity involved should be celebrated alongside the more "canon-friendly" entries.
Looks like you had an awesome time, and this was a great video for experiencing it second had. I think you're wrong about these sorts of videos, though. There are a lot of people who want to go to these events but for several reasons, can't. And videos like this help to experience it second hand.
I remember I did the 1850 main event back in like '08 or '09 and I think I was the only Dark Eldar player at the entire event. This was when they still had a 3rd edition codex in 5th edition. People were like WTF are those never seen em. Was way too much fun crapping all over the razor back spam lists.
I'm sat here with the remainder of a bad cold, a poorly Mrs Orc asleep next to me and a poorly cat who has had eight teeth extracted this week. We need some serious cheering up and I have a feeling this is just the video for it. 🎉
Well, in Europe there is the Lucca Comics and Games. It might not be exclusive to miniatures, but there is tons of stuff regarding tabletop games and etc etc. it is literally the biggest in the world in numbers of visitors and the whole city is covered with stands.
Oh yeah, I get that, but it's a desaturated audience. This is specifically Wargaming, we have larger cons here like UKGE, but that's boardgames much more than wargames
It may not be cinematic perfection. But if its worth anything to you, I really thought this was perfect as is. As someone who hasn't been able to ever make it out to Adepticon, I highly appreciate it!
I think it's funny that he mentioned Duck tails and then they showed a picture of tailspin! Which I get that the plane does look like something very reminiscent of a plane that you would see in either of those cartoons
