    Putting a two stroke ICE engine as a range extender for an EV is kind of ironic. How do they compute emissions.

    • @lowtech_1
      @lowtech_1 2 місяці тому

      Yes thats what I was wondering, what about the emissions? I'm guessing it was a 2 stroke with valve/valves.

    • @sunrisejak2709
      @sunrisejak2709 2 місяці тому +5

      @@lowtech_12 strokes have evolved a very long way from the old days. With direct injection and other technologies 2 strokes are actually cleaner than 4 strokes. But the image and reputation of pollution and noise is solidly cemented. Study what Evinrude accomplished with the 2 stroke in outboards. Cleaner, lighter, quieter, fewer parts, more powerful, more reliable etc etc yet,,,, they failed as the historical reputation was just too hard to overcome. Other companies such as Orbital and others have also pioneered 2 strokes to be compliant with emissions but again no takers. It's not a technology challenge but a stubborn history that won't go away.

      Toyota sales may do well as other car makers stop making sedans. Not everyone wants an SUV or truck. However, they should have stayed out of the EV market until they had something good. The BYD partnership produced the bZ4x and it was worst in class by the time it made it to market.

      Hackett was the one that saved Ford, by making the Bronco and the Maverick. Those two new products are hugely profitable for Ford. Hackett was the one who insisted on a great design. Farley hasn't produced a good new product yet... he is a nice enough guy, but hasn't sacked the deadwood that still permeates Ford management, causing them to take too long to bring out new products, and wimping out like not putting hybrid into the Ranger, which it desperately needs to compete against the market leader Tacoma in the super important midsize truck segment.

    It's interesting that in Toyota case the institutional investors are the ones more aware of Akio's failings on steering the company toward weathering a market disruption.
    I guess with legacy companies the retail investor base is not as energized to do deep research into what they're owning, maybe they just got in on what they perceived as a stable stock.
    Interesting stuff, but hopefully the momentum can shift toward displacing a leadership built on family ties rather than merit.

    Two-strokes are considered cheap to manufacture, simple and easy to maintain because they don't have valves trains and all the associated complexity that introduces into the cylinder head. The obrist design clearly has two valves per cylinder. It's basically two four strokes geared together @ the crank that runs as a two-stroke most likely with some sort of supercharger to facilitate scavenging.

      I think the salient fact would be that Tesla has for years now, had the highest brand loyalty in the US auto industry, by far. This raises the question, how many Teslas are traded in?
      I mean, is that like, 60 Teslas were traded in for ICE and 30 for other EV? There are over 2 million Teslas on the road in the US.

      My big question is if they're counting cars traded in to Tesla themselves (the largest aftermarket EV seller) which usually result in the sale of a new Tesla. Because if they're tracking Tesla owners who sell to other dealerships, that would mean it's already a crowd of people ready to switch away from Tesla.

That clean-burning engine could enable a light truck that burns less than half the gas of an F150 with half the battery pack of a Lightning. I wanted a Cybertruck in 2019, but the price & range just don't make sense right now. Insurance on a $20k Tesla M3 prices some people out. Not even mentioning developing countries, where sporadic fuel & electric would give a hybrid owner the ability to charge from solar at home, drive goods to market, and refuel in town to get back home instead of waiting hours to charge, if facilities even exist.

Even Hydrogen is not very green due to the normal (i.e. cheapest) generation process that has quite a bit of pollution. • @douglasengle2704
      @douglasengle2704 2 місяці тому

      All combustion fuels have emissions. Burning hydrogen creates the strong greenhouse gas water vapor and NOX. Greenhouse gas behavior can not cause global warming because earth's greenhouse effect is always in saturation from water vapor absorbing all the greenhouse radiant energy from the earth's within 20 meters of the radiating surface. Yep, high school science. If the greenhouse effect was not in saturation there would be large changes in retained heat to the earth dependent on humidity that does not happen.
      Using hydrogen in a fuel cell has medium efficiency somewhat close to a Diesel and emits water vapor. Liquid hydrogen is extremely non dense at 7% the density of water and this the smallest of all molecule H2 will permeate tank materials. Methane CH4 has a lot of hydrogen in a much higher density liquid. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_hydrogen#:~:text=The%20density%20of%20liquid%20hydrogen,energy%20density%2C%20many%20fold%20lower.

    TSLA market cap @$700 billion , Toyota @$300 billion and how much is the recall of the Tundra debacle going to cause it? Financial Times a couple of weeks stated Honda and Sony are afraid the Chinese might have an INSURMOUNTABLE lead on BEVs in battery Technology and manufacturing and connected technology.
    Elons Vision of Tesla is slowly coming around with , 1)Tesla cars, 2)Semi for trucking , 3)Optimus and AI for factory production with less human workers and no Uinions, )Data centers for Autonomous cars& FSD,5)Mega Pack for Utility Grid Storage & coupled with Autobidder Software to balance the grid and DEMAND CHARGES, #6)Tesla SC network is tomorrow's Shell EXXON by PROVIDING "Fuel" for long drives , as in Charge for the CHARGE..... I know this might be a lot to digest for some ,but this is why TSLA is valued at more than DOUBLE the next biggest automaker in the Planet Thanks Elon and Tesla , you will make a lot of investors RICH💲💰

      "you will make a lot of investors RICH"...I thought it was about saving the planet. Are you confirming Musk's intention is to make money at the expense of saving the planet?

      Tesla's market cap is mostly hype and BS and will likely collapse soon.

      @@bobbbobb4663an investor 's desires and intentions don't have to match those of the company mission or the CEO. Sometimes people just want to get rich. There's nothing wrong with that and it doesn't mean the company isn't serious about the mission.

    Do you guys seriously think that if enough people buy EVs, we can get the weather to change? Not Just the weather, but the climate? You don't have to answer right away, just mull it over for a couple days. Think about this.

      EVs are just more fun to drive, more convenient charging at home and you don’t smell gas. The software is also much better if it’s tesla/rivian/chinese. All other cars are pretty much garbage.

      Why do you assume that every one who buys an EV and gives a care about climate change or even believes in climate change. I drive in EV because I love EVs. I don't believe in the whole climate change panic. Think about that for a little bit.
