I just bought one and did the unthinkable, I read the directions, it states you must place one hand on the body of the swr meter. I have found I get significantly different results by placing one hand “gripping” the swr meter about the same distance my hand would be from the antenna during normal operation than I did by not grabbing the swr meter. You should try to see if you get different results that way. I did and found some antennas were better than previously observed by doing that however, your mileage may vary.

A 1.1 is ideal but anything between 1.1 and 1.8 is ok a vswr above 2 is not good and that uv5r should produce about 3.8 to 4.2 watts on a fully charged battery. My uv3r 2.2 watts max uv5r 3.9 watts max gt3 3.8 watts max and a b580t again 3.8 watts max all on stock antennas on vhf high power. Vswr on the stock antennas were between 1.4 and 1.9 . Nice video upload and that meter looks quite impressive. 73

Just ordered this from your store link. I needed something small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. I like how it's basic no thrills simple UI.

You have to hold he case of the swr meter as a ground plane.

Reading on 2 mtr showed 4.8 not 5.8

Looks like I might be buying this SWR meter then. Also I think there is a mystical place where all these odds and ends go just so you cant find them later.. they then turn re-appear when you dont need them!

i got my frist radio on christmas, i didnt know anything about radio before that. i ordered 3 more radios so i now have 4 total, all 4 were bought from different sellers. i suspected 2 of the 4 were bad or clones based on slight variations in accessories, the boxes they came in manuals being different and variations in the menus. i bought this tester, it showed up today so i sat for a few hours and did what you did. i started to test everything and i was getting confused and mixed up, next thing i know i had no idea what was tested and not, and one second one radio wouldn't test at all, the next exact test had great results. part of my issues were from a lack of sleep and too much drama at work that was brought home hampering my focus, not knowing what the hell i was doing, another issue is two of my radios were clones, and one of the clones had faked the power settings and the other clone doesnt test at all now but did when this testing started. i still have no idea what i am doing, do you test power with the dummy load? is the 5 watt dummy load even enough watts for my 8 watt settings? every antenna seems to be different on the watts for some reason, also moving the radio/tester/antenna/ around while testing makes a big difference in watts too, so does the frequency, i was getting slightly higher watts on one of the radios at a slightly higher frequency. i half suspect my tester is junk, several antennas are junk and maybe even the two good radios of the 4 total i have were made poory. why would one radio test at 1 watt on low and 3 watts on another with the exact same antenna and settings? i am going to get a different tester so i cant test against the tester lol

Doesn't seem to me you should be able to get higher power readings then with the dummy load? Seems the antenna are mainly tuned for 2 meters. The knockoff actually did very well at 2 meters, that the stock did not even do for the most part, though they did do better then on 70 cm.

I was told testing antennas like this “doesn’t work”. All of my antennas are showing 19.9 on 70cm. What am I doing wrong?

Also, from what I understand, the instructions say to test the SWR for 3 seconds.

To make this an OBJECTIVE test, you should test it on the middle of the band frequency for which the antenna is designed by the manufacturer.. That is 146 MHz on VHF and 445 MHz on UHF! Any other frequency is meaningless and not at all informative. Thanks.
