Hola. If you already know it well discard it. The subjunctive were in Spanish is Fuera. Example: Si tu fueras un pajarito no te gustaría las jaulas. If you were a bird you wouldn't like cages. Adios.

As an Amerian, "If I was you..." sounds very informal. The subjunctive is not dying but it is a marker of education and will probably go on to simply be used in strict contexts, like "that clauses" and orders.

So, if a girl tells me "I hope you are my boyfriend", she is really expecting that. But is she tells me "I wish you were my boyfriend", she is implying that it's impossible. Am I right? I thought only Spanish was that crazy with the subjunctive mood.

Great video. One small point: The reason you don’t use the subjunctive in the example “I believe that God is/isn’t real” is because it is indicative, not a subjunctive (contrary to fact or recommendation scenario.) If you were giving a recommended or proposed scenario or recommending to God to do something lol, you would use it: “It’s vital that God be real for me tomorrow during my test”…Or: “It’s important that God not be present during my test to see how little I studied.” Or if you are expressing a contrary to fact conditional you would use subjunctive: If God were real, there wouldn’t be so much suffering in the world.” (Your meaning being that he isn’t real.) Or, “If God weren’t real, miracles like life wouldn’t exist.” (Your meaning being that he is real.)

How about using the present tense of the subjunctive for desires that might still be possible, like «I wish you be here»?
As opposed to the past tense of the subjunctive, which, as you said, are desires that are no longer possible like «I wish you were here».
And what about the future tense of the subjunctive masked with the auxiliary "should"?

This is a better exposition (sorry, no discriminatory or pejorative intended as your video will be illuminating for many), than some other crap about the subjunctive I've endured dealing with the conditional, imagined, hoped, wished for etc. aspects of language. The point about this grammatical or mood category, in Indo European languages at least, is that it discriminates between what is effective, accomplished, philosophically MANIFEST and that which is YET to be brought into manifest reality, hence the wishing, hoping category we are all taught about , in my case in relation to French. German seems to deal with this much better. Either something is manifestly evident, in the indicative, or it is as yet unproven, as with reported speech in German. We should all read Benjamin Worf's "Language Thought and Reality". qv

Subjunctive is an integral part of neolatin languages: Italian has plenty of expressions which require subjunctive mood - and the meaning of a sentence can shift between real and hypothetical instances, entirely depending on the mood you use.

In Ænglish, it used to be such that words like "waken" would have its past forms as woke, wokest, woken, and gewoken, where the E at the end of "woke" is pronounced. "Woke" where the E is not pronounced (wōk) would be the past - subjunctive form. "Wake" where the E is not pronounced (wæk), would either be the present subjunctive or imperative form.
