The late great actor Vic Tayback wore a dixie cup hat with the brim rolled down as the character Mel Sharples in the movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and the spin off TV show, "Alice".
I'll soak the cover just as you did then work the top with a slight bent to it. It'll put a flare on the top of the cover rather than in the middle. It looks a lot better.
