Thank you. You demonstrated a straight-forward way to fix the broken port problem.
Thanks! I don't have a soldiering iron or know how to use it but your Malaysian accent is so soothing that I feel better anyway!!! :-D
So I've just spend days trying to figure out if there is any way to fix this (I have the same WD Elements HDD) without soldering - apparently there is none :D
But it was very nice to see you can do it yourself!!! I will give it a try if I run into a similar issue (although not this time since I haven't backed the data on this HDD)
Thank you
Hello, I just wanted to thank you for your video on doing a single boot for Remix OS. It works flawlessly on my Lenovo S10-3 and it helps me not have to carry a heavy laptop to college. Btw the format of your videos is excellent, it reminds me of Paul's Hardware and BitWit so hopefully your channel will boom soon. Again Thanks for the tutorial.
Oh by the way, do you plan on doing a similar video with Phoenix OS?
Haha, thanks for the comments man, I appreciate them.
Yes, I indeed have them in my production timeline, maybe that and one for standard Android X86 though that might not be very exciting.
Amazing Bro.
Useful one. 👍
Wow, efficient work man
the things we learn everyday. never thought i can connect a USB to that port xD
5 YEARS! 5 YEARS I went putting o-ff getting the port repaired but only the small side was bad. I RAN TO TEST IT OUT AND BANG! AFTER 5 YEARS!!!!! now im kinda man though LOL
Good video!
Very high quality video
What a legend you are sirrrr!
even i have gone through same problem broken port, can you help me out!
Is the bios specific to the particular firmware?
How do I choose the correct replacement board?
Jumpa jgk video ni. nice info bro.
berhasil ga gan benerinnya?
Man i didnt know u can use a regular micro usb cable on the drive also.
wow.
Thank you for informative video.
I also have WD external harddisk, but in my case "read/write head" has stopped working. Not sure the mechanism had failed or the machine!
Can you help me for the same.
can I remove the USB connector and plug in a SATA connector? , I have the same Hard drive / pcb as you do.
Very clear vid! Since I don't really need my broken drive as an external, I mostly care to save the data inside, do you think it can be connected to the motherboard directly? Or a hard drive dock station? Thanks!
Hmm. This might not be possible as you would probably need to find a board that is compatible with it and doesn't use the USB controller inside.
thanks for the vid....it would have been nice if you could have said what the chips are called...the bottom chip was easy to figure out...however, the center chip I can't figure out what chip that is on my PCB....there's not another chip that looks like that on mine....so I'm unable to complete this repair.
Scared but going to try this! Don't want to pay $$$$ for repair.
I have the exact same drive, with the exact same problem, do I have to find another PCB, or could I just solder a new USB port on it?
Mine doesn't have that micro-usb port, how do I connect it to a computer without its USB enclosure?
You're a hero! Use heat gun to unsolder and resolder
My drive has exactly this same problem. 3 TB WD drive. I wish I could just send it to you help me fix it. I am afraid I might damage it trying to fix it..
halo mera 6tb rdx usb kharab hogaya hai wo ripering hoja ga
how to get doar PCB
I have the exact hard drive with a very similar problem. In my case, the user probably was trying to fit the wrong cable into the Micro USB jack or had the cable the wrong way. TThey mutilated the inside of the jack. It is still firmly soldered onto the board, and there's no other issues. In looking for a replacement Micro USB, there are way too many choices. Can you give me an actual part number for the correct Micro USB jack. I don't know it it's a USB2 or a USB3. I don't know how old the drive is. Is it a Micro A or Micro B, or a Micro AB? Any clues you can give me would be helpful
This is a USB 3.0 micro B. Type A receptacles are the ones we typically see plugged into the PC (RECTANGULAR). USB 3.0 Micro B is easily distinguished by its two port looking (terrible) design.
It's super flimsy with bad durability, which is why it is superceded by USB C
Taping off the neighboring components with kapton tape might've been a good idea.
Kapton tape is something I use now, but unfortunately not something I discovered at the time.
Well done and thank you buddy!
On 3:11 you mention where you got that PCB replacement, but I could not get it. Could please tell me where?
Regards
I got mine off Taobao, but you could probably look on AliExpress as well
@@TechRodent Thank you so much Sir.
Nice video! What chip/z must be desoldered in the damaged pcb to replace it in the new pcb?
no reply i guess
One is the BIOS, one is the data partition tables
Tech Rodent :- I hope that you're good at soldering
Me :- 😐
I'm having a problem on my Toshiba Hard Drive. I don't think it is the same problem as stated in this video but the name got my attention.
My Nephew carelessly removed the connector from the drive. Now I don't know what the problem is but I'm sure it is maybe the connector or the socket from the drive. Before it really got broken I've still managed to use it on our TV but it suddenly exits. Then I figured that its broken. I tried to push the connector in and the light (that signals that the hard disk is working) is going on then off. Then it suddenly just completely went off. A reply would really mean a lot man. I've subscribed to your channel and hoping for a response.
Listen to any clicking noises. If there is then you've most likely got a broken drive.
can we just shoulder the same USB pin that's broken? I cannot get the whole board as it is not available at my place even online.. My harddisk USB port came out along with the wire.
As long as the traces weren't torn off together with the connector, you can.
Mine was a rather extreme case.
Is it just possible to just re-solder the USB port? I'm getting a new hard drive (500gb 2.5" drive and a separate enclosure) I just need the data.
It is, if the traces have not been ripped off completely.
what's the name of the glue you are using to put the chip back? thanks! great video!
No glue was used to put the chips back, just a bit of flux paste to help with the flow of solder.
Please can you advice does it matter when replace PCB 2060-771961-001 rev A With PCB 2060-771961-001 rev B
Unfortunately it needs to be the exact same PCB due to the design differences
thank you
Hi, do you have an email where I can ask you for help with my we elements problem? Thank you
Hi Tech Rodent, I have the same problem with WD 4TB, PCB 2060-800041-003 rev p1 would you be able to help, how to contact you? Thanks,
Where do u bought a pcb board bro? Can share some trusted shop site? Or within MY can i get it..
I bought mine from Taobao, if not then AliExpress... Locally impossible to find
what if I just replace the broken usb port with new one, is that will work too? (if there is no problem with the old pcb)
Yes that will be okay. What I'm showing is a worst case scenario
@@TechRodent thanks
@@TechRodent would you be able to make a video of how to replace the USB port only? Thanks,
what if i didnt swap the bios chip? can it still run?
The chip has information regarding the bios partition, the data blocks and what's stored where, including the firmware.
There is maybe a chance it might work but I wouldn't bet on it.
How do you pry it open
The cases aren't meant to be broken, they will break
0:55 - TRUTH!!
Is it possible to remove the ext sata connectors so the drive can be used internally with normal sata cables?
If by that you mean USB 3.0, if there harddrive already uses a USB board AFAIK It can't be done.
@@TechRodent i have the exact same 2.5" external hdd as the one u fixed. I removed the drive from the case and wanted to use it internally within xbox 360, but I think the xbox uses the two cable sata attachment (used with internal hdds), instead of the usb cable used in externals. Guess I need to buy a new drive - Thanks anyway!
This exact thing happened to me, but I can't find anyone to do this for me :(
i have this problem too on my hard drive
Actual informations starts at 2:00
This was helpful, thanks!!
Can I send you my HD to fix?
This just happened to my hard drive in my bag :/ Hope I can fix it
Good luck!
Did you leave the cable plugged into the drive? Apparently this is planned obsolescence. With repeated use the USB port snaps off the PCB. There is no other support for the USB port other than the PCB. So why this guy wrote what he wrote in his description I don't understand.
Need our help to recover my data
Can i just replace the circuit board with a new one?
Unfortunately it's not that easy. Each board has a different layout for the data inside, it may work by chance, or it may not, worse case is that it damages the drive
@@TechRodent If I found a board of the same model?
My drive board got fried due to a dodgy power supply from a cheap connector.
Is it about specific firmware when using a different board?
What do you mean @ 3:19 when you say: “Now if you’re lucky enough, a simple board swap will work just fine.” Do you mean simply replace the old PCB with the new one, without having to transplant the two bios chips? ...because that would be pretty darn peachy, as my soldering skills don’t exist.
There have been people who have expressed success in the just a board swap, but apparently it's rare.
Tech Rodent I see. Well, if I can find a replacement PCB somewhere I might as well give it a shot. I might get lucky. Thanks for the info kind sir! 👍
Can i bring my drive to you to fix for me? if yes where can i find you? i am in Ghana
Bruv fix it yourself 😂 he's not going to do it for you.
I opened it, it looks like the one on your video
why not solder a new usb port?
The traces on the board were completely torn off from the damage.
It is of course possible if let's say the damage wasn't that extensive, but what is shown here is more of a worse case scenario
wtf you can connect micro usb to a external hd
i know right! i'll be fuckin damned. i am today years old when i found out this can be done!
can u help me repair my hard drive :'(
I am not picking up my harddrive on my pc
Hi please help me
just try today , but its not work ,, i already swap the bois
Hey can you please fix my Hard Disk tooo...... 😭 I have some precious pics... And I don't wanna ness it up that's why.... Please 😭
Blue Light comes on then goes off
I dropped my from a desk, can it be repaired?
The simplest way is just not BUY Western Digital drive. Simple as that. What is the point for all this unnecessary headache when they do this on all their portable drives on purpose? It doesn't make sense does it?
perfect... my cat actually THREW UP right on the connector on my 2tb WD usb drive... which caused a short - you can smell the angry pixies...
That’s so gross lol...but I feel ya. Ugh!
I will never buy a western digital drive because of this non sense Usb soldered port. no matter how cheap the capacity drive is. I will stay well away.
lol I am Malaysian .
you have not answered the topic question...how to repair broken usb PORT! you rather focused on something entirely different from what the topic says. I'd give you a 3/10. Everything in this video entirely made no sense with what the topic says!
I hate that this is my comment, but I’m watching this in front of my kids....I can’t do that if you’re swearing. I know to some people it’s second nature, but seriously, if you’re hear to be helpful then please use professional language. I didn’t know I’d have to screen “how to” videos so closely and there are few helpful videos on how to fix things. Thanks.
Comment is well appreciated! It is a bit second nature, but yeah, I'm try to reduce it.
Cheers!
