  • Lyney's release brings with us the first non Geo character to openly incentivize a mono elemental team, and with him being the first 5 star character of Fontaine, I wanted to make a video discussing how Lyney's surprisingly well thought out design has addressed two concerns I had with character design in Genshin, as well as whether or not we can have more meta relevant mono elemental teams with future characters.

@@_shadow_1397 does damage bonus actually have DR? Also, if you comp Lyney with C6 Bennett and c6 Xiangling, they'd give him 30% pyro damage bonus, which is roughly what a well-built Kazuha would provide (my 940 EM Kazuha, iirc, gives 37-ish% elemental damage). Mono hydro is pretty good, mostly because XQ and Yelan together make any team pretty good. It has the problem that almost always the team is better, if you add some reaction to the last slot, but even with Kokomi or Ayato, it is more than enough to clear the Abyss with full stars.

While I on a personal level feel like I'm wasting opportunity when playing mono elemental teams, I absolutely LOVE that they're carving & supporting the niche for it. I think that's much needed and adds so much flavor and variety to the game as a whole, plus for people who do like teams like that. I feel like even if its not my big interest, its to me a really good sign anyway cause it means they take different or niche play styles seriously, and it makes me excited for the future because it means they can always grow and figure out some other kind of team build styles that who knows, will probably be a perfect fit for me that I've never even thought of. Having freedom of more viable options is awesome! I hope they continue to do a quality mix of niche characters and flexible characters like this. Ik there were a lot of unfortunate duds recently. So it seems like it's pretty hit or miss with them creating a well made character when they're exploring different kit ideas. But at least when they hit, they hit really well!

  • @beaniemave
    @beaniemave Рік тому +3

Interesting topic for a video. The content in this video seems to be more thoroughly researched than the ones in the previous videos, and I applaud Vars for that.
First, let's address the definition of Mono elemental teams: They're not considered "mono elemental" based on the party composition; they're considered "mono elemental" based on what element the team's overall DPS is concentrated on. In other words, a team that is "mono elemental" focuses on buffing one specific element, with that element doing the vast majority of the team DPS, regardless of what actual elements the team comprises of. That is, at least, what the term "mono elemental" was originally intended for.
Now, in my opinion, mono elemental teams were never "bad" per se. They were just unpopular by the general community because they tend to have a lower damage floor than reaction teams while also needlessly restricting team composition possibilities. Reaction teams allow people to get away with lower investment by having the reaction carry the damage (either by buffing the damage dealer or creating their own instance of damage), and reaction teams also utilize sub-DPS characters from different elements to help carry the weight of the overall team DPS (e.g. Hu Tao double hydro has the Yelan/Xingqiu core doing 40% of the team DPS). This isn't to say mono elemental teams can't utilize sub-DPS characters as well, but each character INCLUDING the sub-DPS characters have to be more highly invested in mono elemental teams in comparison to reaction teams.
The overall pros and cons of a mono elemental team include the following:
    PROS:
    - Somewhat unga-bunga playstyle. No need to worry about complex reaction-related combat knowledge such as ICD, double swirling, swirling the right element, etc.
    - Lower ER needs across the entire team, allowing the team to sacrifice ER substats or ER weapons in favor of more offensive options.
    - Allows the team on the other side to make use of the more "premium" elements for reactions (e.g. Dendro and Hydro are in high demand, but having a mono pyro team on one side allows a team like Nilou Bloom to perform on the other side).
    - Works exceptionally well in taking down elemental shields that are weak to the specific element that the mono elemental team is built upon (e.g. Mono Pyro good against Coppelius boss's cryo shield).
    CONS:
    - Lower damage floor as it's more reliant on investment.
    - Easily hard-countered against content that needs a specific element or reaction that the mono elemental team doesn't abide by.
By definition, any hypercarry team that doesn't use reactions to contribute to damage is also a mono elemental team. For instance, even though Ayaka teams typically only use 2 cryos (her and Shenhe), Ayaka being the main source of damage in the team already makes it a "mono elemental team" by technicality. Even her dedicated mono cryo team simply replaces Kokomi with Bennett (it is NOT a melt team as you're not using Bennett for pyro application nor are you swirling pyro. Bennett is just used to hyper-buff Ayaka). I'm sure we're all well-aware of how strong a hyper-invested Ayaka is, and the fact she can achieve that while still technically being "mono elemental" is proof that mono elemental teams have always been strong. She is, of course, far from the only example though of a strong mono elemental team, but she is probably the easiest for people to "envision" as being strong.
Personally, I like the direction Hoyo is going with building characters. While I don't particularly care about pushing Mono elemental teams, I do care about team building variety. Every Pyro DPS that has been released up to now has been a Xingqiu/Yelan slave, and while Lyney being a Bennett slave may not be all that much better, it's still a breath of fresh air to see him stray away from the usual vaporize team archetype.
I'd like to see more characters in the future that rewards (but not restricts) a player to use specific (and maybe non-conventional) elements in a team. Something that comes to a mind is Wanderer's A4 passive that grants him buffs based on what element he comes into contact with when he uses his skill. Even though he's a hypercarry who isn't meant to drive reactions and work with different elements, his passive rewards you for playing around with different teamcomps and giving him synergy with characters that would've otherwise had no use. I also had a "dream" that there may be a future hypercarry that gains stack-able buffs based on the number of reactions that are triggered. Kits like that may seem to indicate that the character is meant to be a reaction driver, but it's an interesting way to make a hypercarry gain buffs without having to use dedicated supports or Bennett.

I ended up getting Lyney after a joke 10 pull on his banner but since I have been a Ganyu main for so long he became an extremely welcome change. His playstyle is similar enough that I felt comfortable playing him right from the get go which is super great when you just wanna mess around. I've enjoyed him so much i even went and got his bow. (It also helps that like you said, his bow works on other bow characters like Ganyu). The other really nice thing about him is while, yeah, his passive and bow passive really do encourage you to play Mono Pyro he does not HAVE to play Mono Pyro. Sure you lose some dps and blah blah blah but he does not become straight up unusable without a pyro squad backing him up which is super refreshing. I've been having a blast running around Fontaine with Lyney Lynette Bennett and Dendro Traveler just because I can. Obviously that is not an optimal team for big boss fights but Lyney still has more than enough fire power to make traveling around easy and comfortable. So yeah. I do not regret jokingly pulling for him at all and I might even have to go for a Constellation in the future just because of how much fun he has been.

The way you worded your comment ("his passive and bow passive really do encourage you to play Mono Pyro he does not HAVE to play Mono Pyro" and everything after that) made me feel like you have a grudge against Nilou specifically, or at least against characters that somehow rely too much on either one reaction, one support character or maybe a very specific team comp (I might be wrong about that).
But in any case I just wanted to remind you (and anyone reading) that there is not a single character in this game that can't beat the open world. Any solo character (+ a shielder or healer if they don't already have that and/or you don't want to use food to replenish their health) can beat the open-world. And most of them, if they are surrounded by even a half-decent team (in terms of synergies I mean, since even bad artifacts are fine in the open world) will do it easily. It's most definitely not a Lyney only thing, rather it's pretty much just how genshin is in general. Now, just in case I was right about your Nilou grudge (again, sorry if I'm wrong), I'll add that Nilou is probably on par with Lyney in that regard, since her pure hydro dmg is pretty good, meaning she works well in, let's say, a casual mono hydro in the open world - with the added benefit of being a juggernaut of a tank which is always nice. But overall I'm pretty sure the same can be said about most characters out there, except maybe a few 4* at worst. So yeah, just wanted to clear that up.
Other than that, yeah, Lyney is a pretty cool character, I just wish he had some resistance to interruption or that his decoys were a little bit more effective, in which case I might have pulled him since I'm still in need of a decent pyro dps

Oh I'm sorry if my comment seemed that way. I actually have no grudge at all against Nilou or those types of characters. Every character has their niche! I suppose i just meant it more in a silly way. Like I could play him with no Pyro partners and thanks to the Bow get a ton of Zoomies on account of the movement speed. You are definitely right about the resistance interruption though. My poor Lyney just gets tossed across a field sometimes haha.@@clementlassalle4317

The idea was good but he isn't the unit who works with this idea. He needs a healer (for his artifact set) and he needs a shielder (because charged shots are slow and he also is too squishy to survive hits from enemies) and Pyro has barely any options for either. He could have worked much better in Cryo (which has both healers and shielders). As is, even Nilou's team has more options to work with.

To answer your question, I've done childe triple hydro with xq and yelan, and it is actually very strong, and clears pretty much anything easily. Only problem is that you're using 3 really good units on a single team, and then you kinda want kazuha because its mono so now you have all 4 in a single team, and making a second team without them is a little rough. Other than that tho it's pretty comfy and performs pretty well. I believe it's even better with ayato too

i'm hoping navia is a support/healer for a Geo team or a buff to Crystallize or even a sub dps instead since we haven't had a geo character in such a long time. the problem with her as a main dps in Mono Geo is the fact that Itto exist even if he doesn't have an alignment connected to him so she better have something to help her differentiate herself from itto or make her as the missing 4th slot in mono geo teams, since Zhongli isn't really needed in mono geo though his particle generation and res shred is alright.

Some claymores are being used differently like Beidou as sub or Dori supp, but their kit was clearly designed with high field time, with the exception that these 2 have their best performance as off-field due to their niche.

For example, they could have each elemental crystallize reaction give different buffs, so for example have Pyro crystals give a pyro shield + Att, buff, Cry a Crit buff, Hydro an HP buff, Anemo an Att+movement speed buff etc

Actually with a C6 Yelan, a mono-hydro party is quite feasible. With her breakthrough barbs and tons of CV, she can switch from being a sub-dps to a driver and really lay on the hurt. Flex slot should be Anemo or Geo so Kazuha will get some good mileage. Then just add Kokomi for some healing and Xingqiu for additional hydro damage and some minor defensive bonuses too to keep your Yelan healthy as she streams across the screen showing who the real Hydro archon is.

I have ayato and I have tried it in the past but it honestly just cannot compete with the massive buffs from kazuha and bennet. It's not even necessarily a problem of not having access to vaporize but a problem of not having access to both kazuha and bennet. Yes, xiangling does add a bunch of damage through all the pyro she can apply for vaporize but that's far outweighed by the combined buffs of both kazuha and bennet on ayato.

good support for mono elemental teams is they should make a special elemental resonance for each element and your entire party needs to be pyro or have some sort of pyro application so like if a character has elemental absorption they count towards the elemental resonance. I would make this resonance quite good since it limits teambuilding alot but to balance lyney and future main dps who are relient on mono teams maybe make there buffs that they get from mono teams slightly weaker or just removed mono focused characters? What are you talking about, mono-elemental teams were meta SINCE MONOPYRO IN 1.0.
1.6 brought Kazuha, who is a perfect anemo for non-reaction elemental carries
2.3 brought Itto and Gorou, solidifying mono-geo as a solid geo archetype
2.4 brought Shenhe, who enabled mono-cryo teams
2.7 brought Yelan, who made mono-hydro pretty alright, if a bit less meta than other mono-elemental teams
Lyney isn’t even that massive upgrade over Klee in mono-pyro because to properly function he needs a defensive unit, which makes you sacrifice some team damage by excluding either Xiangling or Kazuha.

  • @zanzatbc
    @zanzatbc Рік тому +1

Not to sound mean or dorky, but while I enjoy your content, I have to say, there’s no novelty in lyney’s mono team. He just has a passive that helps him push the mono team’s limits on damage cap.
We’ve had ayaka and to a certain extent ganyu mono cryo with shenhe since forever, also both Yoimiya and klee and even Dehya have been used in the exact same position lyney is in this lineup for a very long time.
Mono anemo, or better anemo+geo is another classic non reaction team, since the days of xiao/Jean + albedo/zhongli, and it has only gotten better over the years, especially with the release of faruzan. Mono hydro is pretty good, and mono electro, while being a bit more memey, is still actually playable.
basically we’ve had mono teams ever since Kazuha existed and one could argue even before him. We have two whole artifacts sets dedicated to mono pyro and mono electro.
Not to mention the national core + Kazuha can easily make nearly any unit viable in abyss. In the second part of lyney’s patch there’s actually a renowned ginger guy that is famous for being possibly the best on field unit for this exact team.
Also lyney’s kit is based around charged shots, and he’s not exactly a comfortable choice if you play without a shielder or any form of stagger interruption. It is playable, but without zhongli or any of his substitutes he becomes pretty squishy so most people will end up sacrificing either Kazuha or Xianling in order to have a shielder unit in the team. And if you remove Xianling in order to keep kazuha’s elemental damage buff, you end up with only two pyro units in the team, making lyney’s passive much weaker and less enticing.
The issue with mono elemental teams is that, apart from mono geo, almost every mono team has a better alternative that doesn’t fail elemental checks in abyss and comfortably pushes the damage cap through reactions.
Raiden national, Sucrose national, international, funerational etc, all use the same core duo as mono pyro but can perform more easily against floors with pyro enemies or pyro shields.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a nice unit and I like his playstyle, but it’s not exactly a novelty or the absolute best choice at his role. Nearly every pyro unit can do almost as much damage as him when properly supported.

Lyney got me thinking about how you could design units that enable mono-playstyles for other elements, and I came up with something pretty interesting for mono-Electro: An off-field support that has an electro-dmg buffing/Electro resistance lowering/damaging aura as a burst. But the twist is that this burst has very short duration, and most importantly, NO COOLDOWN. The skill would be a self buff that increases ER, and makes them use their Q automatically, even off-field, whenever it's full, for a certain duration. The question is now how much energy you can funnel to this character with other electro units to get the most aura out of them, which I think plays beautifully into electro's identity as the energy generating element.

mono geo exists because geo as a whole doesnt benefit from reactions 90% of the time, and gorou is made to support 3 geo
mono pyro exist because its basically the best way to play klee (hard to reliably vape or melt) and a xiangling+bennet core are just universally good, and with lyney coming out he is literally built around 3 pyro

I have so many top tier Anemo units + prefered (Anemo) overworled explorers that I've like pigeonholed myself into near-mono'nemo teams 😅😅😅😅. I think I need to look up proper Wanderer teams OR 3-unit teams and see if there are any I like, cause he's a Must for overworld exploration for me, but I'm not enjoying the teams I keep trying to throw together with him, so as a fighter (hypercarry in particular) even tho he's strong, I keep feeling like he's in the way and I want to play other drivers/dps characters instead but don't know how to ignore him while he's sitting on my team during fights and not sure who to put on the rest and still able to do fun big-ish numbers with 3 I enjoy using for fights.

One of the things I wish for the most would be 2 new, strong, preferably male electro sub DPSs and a "dendro thoma" for a "mono electro" aggravate Cyno, but those 3 could also workfor a pure spread Al haitham

about the mono dendro idea. since dendro carries already are tried to their ability to abuse quicken/spread having the supposed monodendro teams 4th slot not be electro is actively shooting yourself in teh foot but i can see it work given we get a key part for it
since dendro doesnt require a 3rd element to res shred and their best supports in nahida and kuki already do wounders for it with deepwood/em scaling healing all it needs is a consistent offield dendro/spread dps ala xiangling/beidou/fischl/yelan/xingqiu/yae you get the point.
the problem with dendro teams that dont abuse bloom rn is with fitting the last slot in a haitham/kuki/nahida core and not just pick hydro for quickbloom. The most prominent healer slot for dendro teams i already kuki due to her innate synergy with EM that only reinforces that since her affinity to EM scales both her healing and turns her into a powerful subdps with hyperblooms
on the other hand while units like beidou are very interesting fits for the last slot she faces 2 innate issues: the lack of fischl negatively impacting her energy generation forcing her to forgo even more power for energy recharge since kuki isnt the greatest battary and the lack of an anemo slot to utilize viridescent venerer to buff her dmg which you just cant fit with monodendro. and if you swap the 2nd dendro for an anemo you just have haitham driving an aggravate team so also missing the point
but assuming we one day get a dendro offield dps that can at least to some degree abuse spread while haitham does his onfield stuff you have a solid foundation for the monodendro core proposed
quicken lasts for 8s and dendro as said doenst have the need to use a specific element to debuff it can just be any unit that can somewhat frequently hit enemies with their skill or burst while offield. so you can already build a team around it using an onfield dendro dps(alhaitham/tighnari for more quickswap gamplay) + offield dendro buffer or subdps (Nahida/dendro traveller using the deepwood set) + the proposed offield dendro subdps (for the sake of argument its now green xiangling since her burst works both with tigh and haitham assuming its dendro) and kuki (who alternatively since her EM isnt needed anymore to trigger hyperblooms can instead run the millelith set for additional atk or even use deepwood herself since deepwood lasts for 8 seconds so she can cover 20 seconds of dendro shred and quicken with just 1 e cast and lets nahida use a dps oriented set since nahida only utilizes the teams highest EM which would still be kuki so she can just run EM Dendro and crit for her mainstats, since kuki without significant hp and crit investment as a subdps faces the same issues as beidou with the lack of an anemo unit so shes best of to be the deepwood holder). additionally youd have nahida who can battary the team very well so energy issues for our green xiangling are also lessend

An anemo 5 star shielder, throw in some anemo buff on them and xaoi and wander will go crazy

Mono electro goes hard actually, try playing Raiden/Yae/Fischl/Benny. You can also swap benny for Baizhu/Yaoyao/kazuha etc, or swap out yae/fish for Sara/Beidou/Kuki, or any other electros that suit your fancy! Its a pretty versatile team archetype and it puts out crazy damage (i pulled great magic for my fischl and it is unreal on her in this team)

With them giving a normal attack level up constellations,, I hope we can see some older characters reworked. I think branching constellations would be a fun idea, and wo7ld give us the option to turn offf constellations (im looking at you C6 Bennett). C3s could offer to level the corresponding ability OR the normal attack, for example.
