Hi everyone, this is Walter with Russell Tree Experts. Now that you’ve read the article, let’s take a quick look at how you can perform this type of pruning yourself. If you’re coming from UA-cam and not the Arbor Ed Article, please check out the link above in the description and then come back to this video!
After your common flowering lilacs are done flowering is the optimal time to perform any necessary pruning for the year. I strongly recommend pruning by hand with a quality pair of hand pruners, as opposed to shearing. Lilac pruning can be generally broken down into either maintenance pruning or rejuvenation pruning.
For maintenance pruning, the focus can be on any shaping that you choose to do along with the removal of dead, diseased, or broken stems. You can also remove spent flowers from your lilacs to help encourage a cleaner growth habit and appearance. When making cuts, try to cut back to a proper lateral stem and an outward facing bud.
For rejuvenation pruning, if you have an older lilac in your landscape that went unpruned for many years, it may look overgrown and unruly. Many people mistakenly believe that these shrubs have stopped flowering due to age, but that can typically be remedied with the proper attention. You can remove older canes or stems that are 2” in diameter or larger to encourage a rejuvenation of the shrub. These older canes or stems may be removed entirely, or reduced significantly, depending on the condition of the shrub. You’ll want to apply the rule of thirds when rejuvenation pruning, which is removing approximately one third of the growth each year for 3 years. This gives the shrub a chance to slowly transition back to a fuller, shorter shrub with more new growth filling in from the bottom. If you decide to prune more than a third, it may stress the overall health of the shrub, but it can still work with some additional care like fertilization and watering.
Your lilac flowers can be influenced by many things such as temperature, soil conditions, diseases, and insects, but proper pruning can go a long way for the life of your shrub and to help put on a good show every Spring. That’s all for now, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask them down below in the comments section!

@@RussellTreeExpertsI have a 5 feet high lilac at 1 feet from my house foundation. Is it bad for the foundation? Should I remove it or is it not dangerous for the home's structure? Thanks

Thanks for this! I’m leaving town in two days for two weeks. But the blooms are just in full swing. Is it better to just prune while the flowers are strong or wait until I’m back? Or is it best to leave it until next year. It’s a relatively healthy bush but I find it a little unruly on the bottom, and wonder whether it couldn’t be more fruitful. It came with the house I bought two years ago so I’m unsure it’s history.

I have a lollipop Lilac that lost a large chunk of the ball from broken branches during the Blizzard this year. Is there a way to encourage growth on that side? Should I cut it all back to "start fresh" or just stick with the lopsided lollipop?

What about the Reblooming Boomerang Series Lilac Bushes by Proven Winners ?
I don't want to risk losing the biggedt , long lasting throughout the rest of the season into the fall blooming of this beautiful landscape bush ? Mine has finall shown off this year its first dpring show ! Ot appests more VASE Shaped and ELEGANT than a Round bush since I planted it . Even though I cut below each bloom it trmaoned on this vased shape . Should I NOW CUT IT Intp a BALL shape ? Or Rnjoy this ? My srcond one at the end of my cottage garden must be moved due to lack of enough sun. Live , lesrn and adjust . Thank you for all your help ❤ i would appreviate any advice pleasr . It,'s put on 12 " of growth so , cutting it would remove all this 😢 growth ?. Thank You !

My lilac trees are 15 feet tall. They are mostly bark with flowers on top. I understand you recommend cutting it 1/3 every year. Should I cut it down to the ground if its 15 feet tall ?

I'd like to add before and after photos. My Lilac tree was too tall to trim the top last year. Now it's only three or four feet tall after 28 inches of snow this month. I think I'll have to do serious rejuvenating. I guess there's no reason to wait for flowering at this point. Any ideas?

Please explain what you mean by an outward facing bud. "When making cuts, try to cut back to an outward facing bud." A diagram would help.

Mine has never bloomed. Can I trim it before spring and does it take a LOT of watering? (It’s close to 14-15 years old)

Hi, I have a Lilac bush that I moved 4 or 5 years ago. It was doing good but now there are some kind of insects boring a couple of holes in the trunk just like before I moved it. What could they be & what can I put on it to get rid of them? Also what kind of fertilizer is good for Lilacs? Thanks.

I have a lilac bush that I grew from a shoot. It is about 3 years old and looks very healthy, yet has not produced any blooms. Any suggestions?

    • @RussellTreeExperts
      @RussellTreeExperts  2 роки тому +1

Without inspecting it in person, if it is 3 years old and looks healthy, it might just need some more time! Some lilacs can be slow to bloom, sometimes taking up to 4 to 6 years. It may help to ensure its watered during dry periods this upcoming spring and to fertilize/mulch the surrounding ground.

Hi I have a very old lilac bush from my grandmother probably almost 75 yrs it has some damages on the bottom how and when do I trim these two big branches off I never know when

    • @RussellTreeExperts

Hello! It is hard to give specific guidance without inspecting the lilacs in person, but I would recommend reading our Arbor Ed article at the top of the description or through this link: www.russelltreeexperts.com/arbor-ed/2020/4/6/when-and-how-to-prune-lilacs?rq=lilacs
In general, lilacs should be pruned after they are done flowering in mid to late Spring and it sounds like depending on the condition and size of of the two branches specifically, your lilac could benefit from rejuvenation pruning if they are 2 inches or larger in diameter. Hopefully this helps!

Thanks for stringing me along guys. Doesn't take you days to look at a picture and say if you can help me or not. Best NOT to ask people to send you pictures if you have no intention of helping them. Pretty disgusting behaviour.
No wonder you only have half a dozen comments.

Hey, Casper. We believe your plant is a Buddleia alternifolia (weeping butterfly bush). We had multiple people reviewing your photos to make sure we had it right, so it took some time.
