advice from a phd candidate: consider how much literature you would be able to find on each topic and how much work each topic would require. If you have problems choosing I strongly advise you to choose the easiest one.
Definitely something to discuss with your advisor especially if you're planning to do a masters or phd later. Some topics 'transfer' better than others.
There is so much out there on all those topics already tho. My PhD dissertation was on casual games and mobile learning in Gen X women and finding historical sources on video games other than news stories was hard!
i can't believe ruby is already preparing for her dissertation! i've been watching ruby since her first year studying english and the time has flown by. ruby has genuinely changed my life for the better, and i am so grateful! good luck in third year :)
@@AngeliqueJDavis if i'm not mistaken, a dissertation is basically a research assignment and extended writing piece. it's usually done in final year i believe. hope that helped!
Contrary to many comments, I would not advise to go with a topic that seems easier or an author you don't like too much. I did my master's thesis on a topic that was as close to my heart as it could get and that I had so much passion for and it was the best decision I could have made. Yes, it was an incredible amount of work, especially since there wasn't a lot of existing research on the topic that I could fall back on, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Choose something you love. You will put so much time and effort into it, you should actually be able to enjoy it. I'm sure you'll make a decision that's right for you x
So true! My masters was hard work but I loved the topic I choose. For the Phd I chose something I was not interested but seemed easier... I end up spending 6 grueling years and finally giving it all up. I just could not stand it anymore.
I have 2 BAs and an MA and I remember when doing my literature MA thesis I was told to never ever pick the author I love, but rather one I was reluctant about. The logic to this is that you will find it far easier to treat the work critically. I am a Jane Austen type but I did my MA on George Orwell's 1984, as far from Austen as I could get! I was much more "detached" from the book and the author and so I felt it was easier to treat it like a piece of academic work instead of a pet project. I am really glad I took that advice!
It's very interesting advice! I did two MA thesis and the subjects were always based upon writers I liked a lot (one of them was my very favorite at the time) but I did choose 'narrow' aspects of their works that I felt I could approach with distance.
Yes, and also if you do it on the author you love, you run the risk of being so sick of them by the time you're done that you've ruined the author for yourself haha
My advice for picking a dissertation topic/writing it are: 1. Make sure you love the topic as it will be all you are doing for a long time 2. Make sure you can get lots of critical reading for the topic before choosing 3. Read and annotate everyday, you’ll be surprised how much you will have “written” before you even start 4. Divide out your time from start date to submission date and allocate time to each section and try to stick to it, I had mine ready and edited a week before submitting this way

I think Victorian is best because I believe that you can blend the research and writing a lot easier with school work + personal life, compared to Shakespeare, it is a web of info you can easily go in hundreds of directions... your mental, emotional health might tumble down.. but you know yourself best. I personally believe that one's mental & emotional health should be taken in consideration in addition to knowing if able to complete task. I failed to think of it recently and it was hard for me. I'm recovering well. I thought I should mention it to you.

Hello Ruby, I'm a 7-year-older (than you) doctoral student in China. And guess what? I majored in chinese literature! To my surprise, in this video, when you're talking about topics you interested in, i found so many similarities in MY study. For example, printed forms and manuscripts are also popular areas in chiese and japaniese literature research. That's because, I guess, great minds somehow think in the same way, and there is universality of aesthetics in literature. These ideas you talked about are also appealing to me. Good luck to you! Hope to see more videos about your area! By the way, can i know your bag color? Is it blue or green??
I find it so interesting how much book prizes differs cross different countries. If I go to a local bookstore almost every book even paperbacks will be around £20. I guess this is partly because many books are translated and therefore has to have and pay a translator. But properly mostly because I live in a country with 5-6mil people and therefor most books can't have as big as a release as books written in english.
Ruby I love your videos so much. I love how authentic you are. Can you do a video on the books you've read off the books to read before you die list. Hope you're doing well.
I'm working on my master's thesis. It's stressing me out like crazy even though I love the topic (Automatic defect detection model for wind turbine blades through the use of artificial neural networks) but I never thought it would be so hard to write the thesis itself. I'm just hoping dark academia vibes will give me some inspiration, motivation, anything really, even though I know it's not completely suited to STEM fields but I need all the help I can get at this point...
I did a stem subject too. The thesis honestly feels like a monster that you keep trying to kill but it refuses to stay dead. 🤣 Hang in there and just keep chipping away at it. One day it'll be done and you can heave a big sigh of relief!

whatever topic you choose you'll smash the dissertation!
loved this very motivating video! the dark academia board is gorgeous!
love watching your videos, Ruby, they give such a cosy and joyful feeling! I share your love of learning and reading and cosy things and I'm currently also researching for my thesis - it's going to be on the relationship between humans and nature so I will definitely be checking out the collection of Women on Nature, thank you for showing it :) All the best, hope you stay inspired!
I really want to say that your videos are just special. The way they're made and the music. There's nothing comparable here on UA-cam
oh goodness! thank you! this is so lovely to hear!
I can’t get enough of that pumpkin mug! ❤️
These videos always give me the motivation to do my own work! Thank you Ruby!
The bookstore looked so lovely!! It must feel absolutely delightful to go book shopping in such a marvelous place!!
Your videos always make me so calm, happy and motivated. A perfect combination.
meanwhile me vs my master thesis: God why did I even start this
You might even end up changing your dissertation topic later on too! Dissertation time can be quite stressful but really fun once you find your topic and your mentor/supervisor is on board with you. Good luck Ruby☺️
Thank you Micayla! That's good to know!
This is really good thinking actually Dolores... thank you for sharing your thoughts :)
I’m starting an online Masters in education with Exeter in September and I’m super excited!
good luck! hopefully I'll see you around!
Omg this is the Motivation Video I need right now, I’m in a huge slump 🙈
I'm so loving your content. You have a lovely voice, too. This means a lot to me.
My favorite part was when you went to the bookstore and then gave us a haul of the things you got 😂
I should do a book haul soon... maybe I can use it as an excuse to do more book shopping 🙈😂
Yes!! You can never have too many haha
@@RubyGranger8 , Have you ever noticed how books are beginning but more interest towards a few chapters? I hope you can relate because I'm not alone.
Oh cool, I'll just finished my second year as well and I'm currently searching for sources and literature for my dissertation (history)
I already know that I'll rewatch this video several times when I'm working on it in the upcoming weeks ☺
My Mum has the same in the kitchen book, but it's called in the garden, about nature and gardening.
Is it just me or did Ruby get thinner? Not in a bad way or anything, she looks great! Just wondering if it is just in my head or she really got thinner.
Yeah she’s lost a lot of weight I think xx
even if you mean it in a nice way, please don’t comment on someone’s weight if they haven’t made it clear that it’s ok to be discussed!
@@izzylk1802 why not?
@@rini12309 because it can be triggering, you don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes & drawing attention to someone’s body when they didn’t ask for it is inappropriate
@@izzylk1802 huh but I don't get what you mean by triggering? Sorry i am kinda confused, i didn't mean anything bad?
Can you please make a video on how i take notes(digital and phisical)
I can't believe you're already at 613K subscribers I have been watching you from when you were at 105K!!!
Wow! Thank you for watching my videos for so long 🥺
@@RubyGranger8 OMG!!!!😳 She replied sbsbhssjkddbdj😭😭😭
Your aesthetic gives me life😍
Ruby somehow manages to make me miss writing dissertations..... how 😅 keep up the good work! ✨✍🏼
Have you thought about using a cork board to pit up your posters, pictures etc? It would be a good way to reduce the sticky residue marks from the tape.
You have an amazing work ethic Ruby! 💖 Great job on getting started on your dissertation! It will be spectacular! 💕📝
Hi ruby, I watch your videos every day! You always give me inspiration and I hope to have friends like you in my life! ❤️
This was the first time that I encountered UA-cam inserting advertisements in the middle of one of Ruby’s videos and it made me sad. And it made me want to fly to England and just sit down and talk with her so we would not be interrupted by advertisements.
I'm starting my Masters dissertation in September and I've got no idea what I want to write about. 😫 It has to be based on sustainable development in mountain regions. 🥰
Good luck!
Thank you Ruby! 🙊
Perhaps sustainable eco tourism? Just a suggestion.
Energy harnessing, sustainable energy methods and costs for development
Congratulation for video, Ruby! You motivate us a lot ❤
omg Ruby ilysm and i love you videos so so much
I really appreciate the dark academia vibes ❤️
0:32 note for myself. Would like to see more of this
Thanks for your 14 hr studying video. It feels to do some thing today
I really like your Halloween mug.
Halloween is my favourite time of year.
I just love love your videos. It is always such a pleasure watching them. Thank you very much for the content you are making :)))
I WANNA KNOW WHAT YOU'VE CHOSEN!!!! WHAT's THE MASTERS MAJOR AHHHH!!!!!
Ruby "going to town". that made me chuckle
I always think Ruby looks like super-clever literary BUNNY who will never gonna be eaten by wolves, rather tease them.
But what are you talking about 😂😂😂.
That's such a strange compliment. But i love it 😂.
Your videos motivate me so much! Thank you!
I love this video! It’s so comforting!
Love the BGMs selected!
The Dickinson topic sounds so interesting 😻
Ruby I love your videos so much. I love how authentic you are. Can you do a video on the books you've read off the books to read before you die list. Hope you're doing well.
Ruby's elegant smiling face is always one of the best parts of her videos.
Omg, no! I missed the premier😢 Still love this video though, and it’s perfect because I was lacking motivation. Love your videos as always Ruby
I'm working on my master's thesis. It's stressing me out like crazy even though I love the topic (Automatic defect detection model for wind turbine blades through the use of artificial neural networks) but I never thought it would be so hard to write the thesis itself. I agonise over every little sentence, it's driving me bonkers.
That sounds like an awesome topic!! I'm only in high school and I already spend so much time and effort on every. tiny. sentence. I can't imagine how I'll do it in college 😥. What are you majoring on?
I love your videos so much and look so forward to them!!
That means so much!
