Thanks for this, I really found it helpful. You’ve explained a few very key, basic points (about knife shapes and their action) that I hadn’t quite figured out on my own. Granted I’ve only used knives three times so far, without any instruction. So I’m keen to get on to a new project with them. Love the music! I hadn’t realized just how much I miss hearing classical music and I really like your choice. Now I have to find out whose music that was. I might suggest that at times it was a bit loud, competing with your speech. But I loved the energy and emotion it portrayed. Hope I can find that composer. If you’re reading this, and care to make it easy for me, please let me know! Thanks for a great video. I’ve already shared it with a friend. Now I want to watch a your Part 2.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I’m really glad you found the video helpful, especially the breakdown of knife shapes and their actions. It’s fantastic that you’re already experimenting with palette knives-it’s such a rewarding tool once you get the hang of it! I’m excited to hear about your next project and hope you have fun diving into it. As for the music, I’m thrilled you enjoyed it! Classical music has a way of adding depth and emotion to any experience, doesn’t it? The piece featured, from recollection, was by Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture (I think that's the name). I love classical music and Tchaikovsky is one of my favorite. I’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind about balancing the volume better in future videos-thank you for pointing that out. Moving into content creating has been a sharp learning curve. I really appreciate you sharing the video with your friend and your interest in Part 2-it means a lot! I hope you find it just as engaging and helpful. Let me know how your next project turns out or if there’s anything else you’d like to explore with palette knives. Thanks again for the wonderful feedback! 😊
This is the first demonstration of this type with a palette knife. Wonderfully done. Thankyou. I think it's just what I need to get my enthusiasm back for painting.
Thank you. I'm glad this has resonated with you. Using a palette knife to paint offers the benefits such as creating thick impasto textures, precise application of paint, and the ability to easily blend colors on the canvas. Just remember start with an easy subject matter you'll have a fun journey without being too overwhelmed. Happy painting.
Glad you enjoyed the video ❤Acrylics lack texture and dry quickly, but you can add texture and slow drying time. However, for me personally, oils have a buttery feel that acrylics can't match, making them ideal for palette-knife work....
I’ve been doing it all wrong, it’s not a knife fight ,stabbing and slashing the color to death😢, rather it’s a mindful, technical, figure 8 dance. I’m not at all sure I have the patients to go back and retrain the muscle movement but at least you have provided me with a clear path. You are doing for us what your perceptive teacher did for you ,we thank you for teaching it forward.
Beautiful humorous description, "knife fight".....love it!!! It's a battle between us and us, most of the time. I am glad the information resonated. Use it to discover your authentic signature and with daily painting, you will begin to know your own personal movements. Happy Painting, Mirjana 🌻
Thank you for demonstrating this. Figure eight... got it. I like that you included both wet-on-wet and dry. It was helpful to us visual learners. Thank you for sharing your gift with others :)
My absolute pleasure. Appreciate your kindness. Keep that paint moving daily. Start with painting small and easy subjects, they are great for getting to know the palette-knives nuances. Happy Painting ❤
Omg! I am so done with brushes! Your opening words about being direct, and how brushes scrape more paint off! Thank you for your technique information!
Painting palette-knives are like being in a new world. I'm glad the information resonated. I spent nearly a decade frustrated, then a new door opened. Keep that knife moving as often as you can, you will slowly start to move into your own technique. Happy Painting, ❤
Hi Ellie, welcome to the mad world of creative fun and adventure 😄 Thank you for connecting with my work and channel.....just remember, know it's always about colour and shapes. Keep a creative journal along the way, you'll be amazed how far you will progress in 6 months time. Happy Painting and keep those palette-knives moving with paint. 👋♥
What a revelation this video is. I am about to go to my first class and thought to look on line and find the world, wow you are one awesome communicator, now to palette knives.
Good Day Jane, you're most kind, thank you. And thank you for connecting with my work and channel. I hope you've got some good painting nuggets to propel you along your art journey. Best of luck starting the art classes. Happy Painting, Mirjana ❤
Omg I’ve always wanted to start painting and the way you’ve explained why you started using palette knives chefs kiss now I know I want to start!!! Thanks again
You are most welcome! For years I was frustrated not knowing how to achieve crisp vibrant colour.....and then the palette-knife appeared. AHA moment! The palette knife keeps the pigment tight, so when light catches the tone, it has a higher reflective power. Our eyes perceive this as a crisp vibrancy....Happy Painting, M
Thank You, appreciate the support and kindness. "Ocean of Magical Luck and a sea of Inspiration"...love that. Have a wonderful creative week ahead, M. ❤
My absolute pleasure. When you get a spare moment, check out my updated video on cheap vs expensive palette-knives as well as an easy tutorial on using the painting palette-knife ua-cam.com/video/rN-Gt4MsB5w/v-deo.html Thank you for connecting with my work. Best Wishes, M.
My absolute pleasure. Glad the information resonates. When you get a moment do check out my last video from 10 days ago, “Each Palette-Knife tells a different story”. I highlight how palette knives behave and the various marks they make. Welcome to the channel and thank you for connecting. Happy Painting.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! "Figure 8" technique gave me a breakthrough in my palette knife understanding. I feel eager to grab a knife and try it with insights from you.
My absolute pleasure. Practice and continual painting, refining in every moment with different subjects, has been the key in my work. I used to spend hours, daily refining my technique.....Over time you will connect with your own personal signature style. Keep that creativity alive daily. Happy Painting, M
Thank you so much for such a beautiful explanation.. no one has explained so clearly.. with details.. I do paint with knife but have learnt so much here.. God bless you 💖
Wonderful it to hear, thank you...... a new inspiration for the studio. Thank you for connecting with my work, Blessing for a wonderful and creative day.
My absolute pleasure David ❤ Time permitting, I've updated the palette-knife discussion with a new video which you might like, ua-cam.com/video/rN-Gt4MsB5w/v-deo.html as well as a tutorial following this video, that might be helpful, ua-cam.com/video/xFr8vgoAhVU/v-deo.html Thank you kindly for subscribing and for connecting. Best wishes for a wonderful creative weekend.
I like the way you explain what I need to find about myself to know what I need to do. I am definitely a fast full movements personality. I enjoy using brunches and drawing with charcoal. Now I want texture in my painting and love using a knife not just to mix paint but to paint. I noticed that you use boards instead of canvas or should I say as well. What type of board is good to use. Thank you so much
Hi Kate, Thank you for connecting with my work and channel. Grateful that the information was able to enhance your art journey. In this example, I am painting on Kraft Paper. A direction I took from Toulouse-Lautrec. I have used boards in the past and one that I like is by Jack Richeson & Co. I fluctuate between canvas/linen and boards. I suppose pending on what I'd like to achieve is what materials I choose to use. Hope this helps. Best wishes for a creative day 🌻🖌
It was kismet, love that! The video was meant to come your way.... Oil paint feels like room temperature butter, and since I love cooking with butter, I figured... Well, at least painting can't make me gain weight!..............Why did the butter go to art school? Because it wanted to get a little "butter" at palette-knife painting!....Happy Painting, and may your artistic journey always be as smooth as spreading butter on warm toast. ❤
Oh my, that is a brilliant metaphor! Love it! Spot on, while skiing and painting differ in appearance and purpose, both are about; precision and movement, creative expression, energy and flow, risk and adventure, tactile experience, skill, control and expression........note to self, next holiday on the slopes. Happy creating. 🙂
@@realartiststudios I'm glad you appreciate the comment! Your description is even better! I don't have currently much use for the technique, I paint mostly abstract with brushes, but will give it a try sometime! Thank you for sharing.
Hi, not sure what you mean if I have stored pastels? From time to time, I have used sennelier soft pastels for sketching, which have a very smooth buttery feel when I paint....Thank you for connecting with my work and the channel.
18:15 this is the very instructive part for the highlight + the 8 motion movement when I just had a flash of understanding. if you are not a teacher you should definitely teach students.
Thank you for your kind words! While I'm not a qualified teacher, I've conducted many art classes and successfully introduced even the most novice students to the joys of painting with a palette knife. Glad you enjoyed the video. Happy painting.
Glad this video has inspired and helped. I'll be putting together a follow up video on which palette knives are best to use both for beginners and intermediate artist. I've ordered a new set of knives, to demo with.....and once they arrive I'll do a new video. Thank you again for connecting. Happy Painting, M
I must comment on how well you explain. You are methodical,. Your ideas and thoughts build on one another in a systematic way. Clarity ! _____________ Some things can't be easily explained. For example, how different knives behave with paint. The shape, size and flexibility of the various knives all have a bearing on how the paint moves. The particular qualities of each knife show themselves through continued usage. In time, you will automatically reach for the knife that does what you need to do.. The knife becomes an extension of your body. Be patient.
Thank you; I value your feedback. Over the course of 20 years, I've gathered numerous valuable art tips, and I prioritize sharing that knowledge in my videos, as best as I can (not the most proficient videographer/editor.....doing the best I can in that department). Condensing how teaching art information can be challenging, I believe those who resonate with my content and watch my videos can establish a solid foundation for painting and mastering the palette knife technique. Your description of how palette knives behave is brilliant and on point!!! I dedicated a year to creating less-than-perfect art in order to fully grasp the intricacies of working with palette knives. It was undoubtedly a challenge, but the experience proved to be immensely rewarding. Best wishes for a creative day. Happy Painting, M
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'changing the shape of the palette-knife at the tip"? What I think you are referring to is my favorite knife that I use. The shape of that palette-knife is a little warped and distorted due to ware and tare. I've had that knife for well over 6 years and because of constant use, its shape has changed. Hope this helps. Best wishes for your day, M.
The hardest part to painting is starting. Begin with small subjects and find local teachers. Between physical classes and watching on-line art tutors you will start to gain confidence and reach your destination in no time. Best of Luck.
At the beginning you say you hope we can get one nugget from your presentation and I think that is some chunk of time to spend for just one thing. I realize what you are doing is not really that relevant to the way I am wanting to use the painting knife although you are reinforcing all the things I am becoming aware of wrt chroma variations, value variations, hard versus soft transitions, focal points and directing the viewer etc. All explained clearly and well enough there to stick with it. Then MY nugget. I have been thinking, maybe only subconsciously, that at some point I will make a breakthrough and the paint will just start flying on the canvas and it will be easy with a great outcome. But you point out that it is all WORK, that everything starts with knowing exactly what you are going to do BEFORE anything hits the canvas. For me that is a big help to keep in mind NOT to assume you will be able to come up with all the brilliant solutions during the painting when it was not clear beforehand. Great job, keep it up, thanks for the nugget!

Could we reduce the level of music in the black ground…….what is it with all the you tube casts with music in the background…it’s so distracting sorry
Totally agree. It's gorgeous music, but it makes it so difficult to hear what's being said and detracts from the tutorial (which is great btw!)

Music is so annoying.
teach more and reduce unnecessary talks . People don’t have time to watch such long videos .
