In the run up to Breath of the Wild, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, easter eggs and history of Zelda's Ganon. Ganon, also known as Ganondorf, has been with The Legend of Zelda since its inception. Ganon became more relateable when he was given a more human form, which has been present in everything from Ocarina of Time to Super Smash Bros Melee (ssbm). In our analysis of the character's history, the series lore, and beta zelda games, we discovered that Ocarina was once planned to be more like Super Mario 64, and that Ganon's monologue at the end of Twilight Princess was going to be much longer.

If some one threw a fishing rod at me during a fight, I would be confused too
He also lived in the desert, so he may not know what it is.
Now I have a mental image of Ganon slowly backing away from fishing rods like their some kind of super weapon.
***** They could catch fish/octroks with spears though.
I wonder what will breath of the wild will bring to the table
Like: "What joke item will be effective this time?"
If you ask me, of all the unusual items that can be used against Ganon, the fishing rod makes the most sense. Think about it: he grew up in the desert. He's probably never seen one before. So when his archenemy puts away the Master Sword and pulls this strange thing out in the middle of a battle, who is to say it's not some sort of ultimate weapon?
Well that makes sense...
I like the idea of Ganondorf canonically living for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, and in all that time he’s never seen a fishing rod before
"What is that kid doing putting his Master Sword away? What is that? In all my years of glory I have never seen something that magnificent! Must be a special weapon capable of defeating me!"
tru but 2 bad in OOT ganodorf vists the cassel & spendz time out side of gerudu vally
so he haz seen h2o fish
TP ganondrof r same 1 From OOT kid time line
Not to forget he’s technically ancient in most games - there isn’t a massive difference, but certain new technologies would become foreign.
Ganon really let himself go in Majoras Mask, losing his arms and legs and getting so fat he acquired a gravitational pull.
Nick Jett It took me 3 seconds to get the joke, and now you owe me a new keyboard.
Everything has a gravitational pull, no matter how small :D
+pokemonduck *significant
Yeah the moon. :D too funny.
Your rude that has offended me
"Zelda's Ganon"
Oh yeah, as opposed to _all the _*_other_* 'Ganons' out there. Thanks for clarifying that. Don't want to get them confused.
Wait, this video is about *Ganon?*
I thought it was about the Final Fantasy character, *Banon!*
I'm not Ganon! I'm my very own original character, BLANON!
***** Is it canon to Ganon?
Maybe for people that dont care about Zelda, so they know this video is about Zelda content.
***** *grabs joke*
IT'S MINE
*runs off into the sunset*
I wonder why they don't canonically want Ganondorfs last name to be Dragmire. Maybe because if they introduced last names it could get weird 'timeline' wise, instead of being able to be more vague with everything.
Guess you can say that's kind of a drag.
SpaceHamster Ganon/Ganondorf Dragmire sounds so badass though!
and strangely Jewish....
SpaceHamster wouldnt want the gannon cannon to be all mixed up. even though link can travel between time and through dimensions.
I think it was because those names were invented by Nintendo of America, not the original design team. Furthermore, wouldn't they then have to deal with the rest of the story in the manual, with its potential inconsistencies?
This is the real spacehamster :O
Despite it not being canon, "Ganondorf Dragmire" is still a really cool full name.
Giggity
@@l1m1x77
Goo
Nice.
I will consider it as his real name
It's canon now
Now do one for Groose
Let loose the Groose!
The legend of Groose must live on.
Waylon Park I forgot the cookies.
The groose must be let loose
YOU FORGOT THE COOKIES!!?!?!
The Ganon cannon......
Get it....it's a pun
Gumshoe Gamer LOL
Gamegirlchannel Glad someone thought it was funny
You beat me to it!!
The Ganon Cannon is non-canon.
I just wonder what Ganon's up to
Idunno, but whatever it is, better grab my stuff.
I CANT WAIT TA BOMB SUM DODONGOS
Maiboy
I'm just being me. Thanks for asking. :)
+Gannon Price You're still no match for the King 💪
ganon so huge, you cant see him on screen and must climb him..... breath of the wild last boss anyone?? hope so!
Dragonball Final Bout's Bebi Vegeta...
You could only see his legs, and most of his attacks missed you.
I'm imagining something as big as adamntoise from FF15
i'd climb ganon any form, any day
Imagine it being like Kratos vs Cronos in God of War 3.
Sadly the climbing part was left out, which is funny because the Talus mini-bosses are climbed in mush the same way.
All the mechanics for a climbable Ganon are in BotW. They could have used the updrafts created by his lasers to get higher up on his body, and alternative ways include jumping off your horse, Ravali's Gale, or just climb the whole way.
I love how Miyamoto never wastes a good idea, and how stuff like the giant boss battle gets fully utilized in later games. I just get the feeling he's got a whole filing cabinet full of ideas like that, just waiting to be used in future projects.
"Ganondorf was a last minute addition to Melee" that finally explains why he is a clone of Falcon of all things. it doesnt explain why he has continued to be an uninteresting clone after that though.
I still prefer playing ganon in smash over captain falcon.
would it change anything if the moveset(sans the Ganon Final Smash) were put on Black Shadow from F-Zero and Ganon had a whole new moveset? or would it "not feel right" to you?
I dont understand what you're asking
Since you prefer Ganon he's asking if you would think it would be better to "unclone" Ganon. (give him an original move-set) and in return add Ganon's clone moveset on Black Shadow (another F Zero character not in the Smash games)
I like this solution as it free's up Ganon to be more original whilst not removing an altered play-style that exists.
BaneDain No matter how you slice it, Ganondorf is going to remain being a heavy fist fighting character, if he gets a new move set it cant be that much different.
Ganon lives as the only male in village full of desert babes who worship him... *why the fuck isn't that enough*
Probably because living in the desert really sucks
As pointed out in a MatthewMattosis video, a Gerudo male is only born every 100 years (think about it) to keep the tribe going Ganon's life has to get real incest-y for really really long period of time.
(one could argue he only has to have one child or that the women doesnt have to be Gerudo but the age of the girls and the lack of other characters there makes that an impossibility)
(though this is more likely an oversight than real lore)
The real reason is their people are cursed due to the events of Skyward sword, and repeat themselves over and over again. Reading the full text from Twighlight Princess (the lines in this video) makes it a bit more clear.
Ganondorf isn't into tanned chicks. He'd rather conquer a large empty plain and erase both the stalchildren and peahat species than even considering going on a date with one
Fensnake So you saying sand is coarse and rough *and it gets everywhere?*
BaneDain In Ocarina the gerudo ladies say they got out to find dates in other parts of Hyrule. That's how they reproduce.
Link: HYEAA!
"Fishing lure lies on the ground"
Ganondorf: The fuck did he just do--AAHH, HE STABBED ME IN THE SPLEEN!
Thanks to SourceGaming for the translation of Sakurai's Melee quote: ua-cam.com/channels/d5k_Ddt992tLGwYi3VgnZA.html
did you know marvel vs capcom series
did you know tekken
I'd suggest putting an epilepsy warning on that end bit just to be safe.
I would purposely have seizures at the end of Zelda 2... from frustration!
hey didyouknowgaming can you do another animal crossing video? animal crossing is my favorite game and i love watching your past videos on it. but watching the same thing 2 videos over and over again gets kinda boring :I
Ganondorf has always been my favorite Nintendo character ever since he got a human form. It's why Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. Ganon truely felt powerful enough to take over a kingdom, which was a sticking point for me in all the other games. But in Smash is where I really discovered the Dark Lord and Master. Who else will grab the opponent by the neck, lift them into the air, then pump a ton of dark energy into them to rocket them into the sky? To me, he's on par with Sephiroth, Kefka, Thanatos, and Lavos as powerhouse villains.
Sephiroth is also in smash now :)
Why hasn't Nintendo given him his own game yet?! honestly it's ridiculous
They haven't given Bowser his own game, yet, either.
SPUTNIK. True true
But what about Bowser's Inside Story
SanjiBaratie How do you picture Ganon's game will be? I honestly can't think of anything for him.
I always thought an interesting game would be either the Triforces go to the wrong people, or just something causes Link to go crazy and become the antagonist, where Ganon now has to beat Link at full power in order to get what he wants. Could be fun. It would be vastly different than other Zelda games, but could be fun.
Maybe Gannon was just a play on the word Gammon, like the pork meat?
Nice to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that too XD. I just think it makes a lot more sense compared to the "fair skinned" theory. Considering Bowsers original name "Koopa" is derived from the Japanese "Kuppa" dish, it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to assume that Ganon's name might have also been inspired by culinary dishes.
I always thought that, too.
That might explain why he was going to be named "Gannon" instead of "Ganon"
Yeah, AceDroo. Like Dragon Ball, especially the Saiyans. There is a report the people named them after the food, especially the vegetables.
@@Patricio4Christ all the saiyans are only named after vegetables. Excluding Vegeta and tarble whose names are derived from the word vegetable itself. Vegeta Tarble
At this point I'm beginning to think that just about every piece of Japanese media from the last millenium or so has been influenced in some way or another by Journey to the West....
hip indeed i agree
I mean, yeah, it's like Shakespeare in terms of its influence on East Asian culture.
Holy shit, I wasnt paying attention at the opening shot when Ganondorf is taking a knee and I thought he had a GINORMOUS bulge
dick chappy DAMMNNNN
I would expect a comment like that from someone named DICK CHAPPY!
dick chappy I GET YOUR NAMES REFERENCE
Can some make that concept art at 3:10 a mod skin for Ganondorf in Smash
That looks pretty menacing
Agreed. Needs to happen.
or maybe we could just make it as is instead of making changes to an officlal design just because one guy doesn't like it.
NekoVira Settle down a bit. He's not wrong, it's fairly similar to a lot of designs of that time. And small changes wouldn't be a bad thing to make him more distinct.
As for being too slender Son Goku. I don't mind that too much. It would be nice to see a Ganondorf more on the Magic side of Power again, like Aganihm.
Son Goku It would be a change, but I think some major changes are needed for the whole Zelda franchise. Looks like Nintendo thinks so too with Breath of the Wild. This is niether here nor there, but if they do another Smash Bros, might be interesting to have a HEAVY magic man too, and let someone else take the heavy hitter spot too.
Son Goku Very true. Need more F Zero characters. OH! And it would open up the door for Deathborn! Guy was generically evil, but had a really nifty design.
What's with the main villain's laugh being a slowed down version of the laughs of the ghosts on the N64?! (Mario 64 did this, too)
It saves time and effort to just use record one laugh sound clip and speed it up than record 2 separate laughs. I never knew that OoT also used this trick until this video!
SM64 and OoT use similar game engines, so perhaps Nintendo used this trick in both games as a sort of inside joke, just like how the infamous 'Eternal Star' statue texture was also used inside Dodongo's Cavern in OoT.
Saving cartridge space ^^
The Cutehog Team it saves space and it gives them a neat fun fact to tell their friends when it comes out
"Pulling out the fishing rod and attacking Gannon with it will distract him long enough to attack."
Yeah, if somebody pulled out a fishing rod and swung it at me in the middle of a battle, I'd probably be pretty confused, too.
Was fun to see the butterfly net mentioned on this. Back when LttP first came out we had no idea you could use the sword and relied solely on it. Nice to see it brought back for Skyward
zELDA
Did you see the latest Nintendo News Letter?
Woah! Nice Graphics! I'd like to get my hands on that game!
You mean you haven't played it yet? We can play it on my Nintendo Entertainment System!
It's the legend of Zelda and it's really rad.
Those creatures from Ganon are pretty bad, Octoroks and Tektites, Leavers too, But with your help our hero pulls through. Ya, go Link, ya, get Zelda.
Awesome!
Intense.
I mean I know I'm white, but these kids make me look like fucking P. Diddy, a'ight?
Windwaker Ganondorf is the best! :D
The link between the Poe laugh and Ganondorf laugh....heh, the same trick used in Mario 64. xD
Was expecting the error made by Viridi during her conversation between Pit and Ganondorf in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U to be mentioned. There, her and Palutena state that Ganon, much like Link and Zelda, are reincarnated throughout the series. Ganondorf is usually just resurrected and has been the same Ganondorf in every Zelda game he's been in.
Four Swords Adventures?
"footage from GameGrumps"
Glad that the audio or the horrible gameplay wasn't in the clip
BrutalMoon moomin
Yes Ganondorf was indeed a last minute edition to Melee and very lucky to have made it in. Fun Fact: Sakurai was going to include King Dedede in Melee in exchange for the clone characters but I guess fans would have wanted more characters to choose from than giving them up for 1 character.
In the darkest nightmare hour,
where not moon nor sun has risen,
I take Zelda in my power,
I shall keep her in my prison!
TheDefectiveTurret Ganon took some time to attend some poetry lessons I see.
The initial idea for the final boss in Ocarina of Time was interesting to hear about. It's like Shadow of the Colossus 7 years before there was Shadow of the Colossus. I'm actually glad they didn't go with that idea only because the N64 would not have been able to handle it properly and that part of the game would have sucked.
I share a birthday with Ganon and the Japanese release with the legend of Zelda, February 21st 1996
Of course Ganon stops when he sees a fishing rod. He's from the desert! He's probably never seen one before.
01:59 What's it with N64 using the sped up laugh of the main villain as the sound for the main ghost-enemy?
Seriously, the idea of fighting Ganon as a Titan sounds amazing. They should have used that for Breath of the Wild.
So Ganon was the original Colossi?
Man, how did they figure all of this out? They must have spent years studying Ganon canon!
5:46 - 6:00 Yeah, I don't think it's a good idea to advertise one of the most hated videos on the channel.
...? Really?
why is it hated? o.ô
It's overly confusing to watch, watch it for yourself.
back in the jon tron days it was due to them never finishing the games they started. now it's because arin is bad at playing games and has shit opinions and wants to piss people off.
Who are they and should I give a damn?
The extra monologue of Ganondorf in Twilight Princess that was unused was probably reused for Demise. They are very similar!
Beating tp Ganondorf was the coolest video game moment I had as a kid
Ganon probably doesn't believe what he's seeing when Link casts the line xD
Love it when you press the like button and it changes from 3k to 4k
You must have R E A L Y liked the video.
That kerning on that "Ganon" title card is going to wig out any other designers out there.
I wonder if the name Ganondorf is a weird "engrish" nod to LOTR's Gandalf.
Mind blown
Many places in Switzerland has the suffix dorf, so I was quite paranoid there...
I think I can die happy knowing that Uncle Nando has his own DYK Gaming video.
Who else expects the giant Ganon final boss to become realized in Breath of the Wild?
I would love that. And wait for people to claim it's a ripoff of Shadow of the Colossus when Zelda had the idea so much longer.
The Satellite I know right. I think it would play a lot differently though too.
I can just picture it being exactly like the SMG1 fight, but with Ganondorf's face on top instead x)
VonFirflirch I'm thinking (and hoping) way bigger...like Ganon's the size of Hyrule Castle Town and Castle big. :)
So a giant robot with Ganondorf's face at the top... got it.
I wish they kept the extra bit of monologue in Twilight Princess. That bit they took out had enough lore on its own to make it more interesting.
I wish you would've included why Sakurai is never gonna change how Ganon plays in Smash. In that he reminds him too much of his dad.
"Ganondorf is somewhat of a contradiction---in Smash Brothers, he's both powerful, yet sometimes comes across as a little worn down, a little tired. In a way, he was greatly influenced by my late father who passed away shortly beforehand. As a child, I viewed my father as a strict-disciplinarian, a man I both feared and respected. But when I grew up, I realized my father, that man I was saw as a powerful figure---a king---was often out of breath, and limped along. I wondered why I feared him so much? And in a way, that's how I've developed Ganondorf as a character. Personally I'm quite close to the character, and thus I find it difficult to bring myself to change him too much."
because this isn't real
When it says ganon but shows ganondorf on the side
Dragmire sounds like Quagmire in Drag.
Giggity.
Or…TomScream!
The Ganon end screen was a awesome touch!
1:59
kinda Like Boo and Bowser, and Wario and Thwomp!
So, i get why Ganon was a Captain Falcon clone in Melee, but that means there's no excuse for him to still be a clone in Brawl or 3DS/WiiU....
Probably to keep him consistent for the fans. Ganondorf was pretty popular in Melee.
first vid of 2017
When I played Ocarina of Time for the first time I thought the only way to reflect the magic was with a bottle. I learned that I could use my sword after I completed it.
Maybe they gave him an Irish name because he has red hair? (I'm from Irish decent, so it's not racist)
Kubo Edgeworth It's likely just irony.
Neither Irish people nor redheads are a race, but I get your point :P
pokemonduck the Irish is a race and you can be racist to Irish people
Source: I'm Irish
I'm Irish and not offended. But since I live in a time where being a whiny American is a trend in English speaking nations, I guess I'll just have to work on being offended anyway.
Shiron Bando Being Irish but living in England in the 1980s was horrible. Racism was everywhere, you were constantly accused of being a terrorist or a sleeper agent for the IRA.
It's not that I'm offended by it any more, but you can't deny that you can't be racist to the Irish because I've experienced it.
What’s nice about the giant Ganon concept is that it got re-used for BOTW, although without the climbing. An idea is never lost, just finds its eventual place.
I'm obsessed with ganondorf man he truly is a great character
There was this kid on my bus in school his name was Ganon. My nickname for him? Ganondork
did you know
dykg is getting super repetitive with their facts n trivia and should probably look at other games they haven't done a video on yet
Except all the facts they continue to dish out are interesting instead of being repetitive. Don't be salty just because you can't appreciate Zelda facts. I fucking love these vids. Keep em coming DYKG!
@Zan Zen thanks for responding to a year old comment, i guess??
but to be fair, i didn't make that comment to necessarily *hate* on the video. it was a tiny criticism of mine (and yes, there's a fine line between hate and criticism.) since at the time, a handful of did you know gaming videos were repeating facts from their older videos. nowadays it looks like dykg is tackling other game series they haven't covered yet, and when they DO tread old ground, they're not repeating themselves. so cheers to that.
janeykara
ok but criticism is like telling someome what they could be better and you just kinda said they were getting repetitive.
And it definately wasn't a "tiny"
bit
yeah, i said "it was getting repetitive". that means "hey you're getting repetitive, don't do that". simple as that.
janeykara did you know thats subjective
Did you know?Sakurai has refused to make Ganondorf into his own non-clone character for 3 consecutive Smash games?
Shame they didn't get to use his Oracle's form. He looked pretty cool in that artwork, kind of like an Ishinomori villain.
Reminds me of Dracula
Wow , an Amercan didn't say "Irish" incorrectly. I never thought I would see the day.
How do people say it?
LucianoThePig I'm fairly confident that's how absolutely everyone pronounces it
masgames38 Most Americans put waay to much stress on the "i". It's worse with Ireland. Most Americans pronounce it like IIIII-orland , while in Ireland we pronounce it as "Are-land"
I've never heard it pronounced differently...
Thomas PlaysTheGames Where are you from?
'Ganon falls victim to several silly tricks' Like having a bad matchup against Olimar in Smash 4 & Brawl.
Error at 3:29, the speaker says "Demise FIREBALLS" even though he uses electrical attacks.
So Ganon and my ex have the same birthday. It all makes sense now.
Ganon is probably the most successful villain I can think of, I mean he does lose but he always seems to destroy the world first
Eggman blew up half the moon, and the Earth to pieces.
Unsubbed for not calling it "DidYouKnowGanon".
Kidding
One of my favorite video game villains.
Why specify Zelda, are there other Ganon's out there?
My understanding as always been that "Ganon" or "Gannon" means "politician" in Gaelic. That makes more sense.
How about doing a video on Warioware or Rhythm Heaven?
That One Awkward Guy Well, there was a video on Wario a while ago. I don't know about a Rhythm Heaven DYKG but then again there was that one video on Spongebob games. lol
HolySka1991 I'm talking more about the Warioware GAMES, not the Wario character.
Maybe if Ganondorf didn't make it into Melee, he would've had an actual moveset in Brawl.
They did an episode on f*cking Ganon and still haven't done Kirby part 2.
Shane why
Kirby and Ganondorf are probably at least equal, Ganondorf is not a "way bigger character" than Kirby. It's probably because Kirby games are more basic platformers and don't have a lot of story. So not a lot of interesting information.
victikirby15 Kirby sux
Honestly these character specific videos are more interesting than the game ones.
the full Ganondorf monologue though. so deep.
Really evocative of the franchise's lore
TP Ganondorf is my favorite iteration and ganondorf is my favorite villain of all time
Ganondorf the Manondorf
lol I like how you used "cannon" to explain how "Gannon" was once spelled, it being the only other example I can think of that also has both a one and two "n" version :p
Tales series
MM3D was going to have a actual Ganondorf cameo. A model of him, Sheik, Impa and Saria were found in the game's files. It was believe that they would run the 3D's exclusive fishing ponds, as Ganondorf's model for example was called fishing_man.cmb
"As long as Link was in 3D"
so he always had the stupid "gimmicks before quality" mentality that has been plaguing every recent game he is associated with. The whole game in a castle. Can you imagine if they hadn't turned down that idea? And people disagree that he is the type of developer that drags down a game's potential in favor of technological capability. It bothers me that people worthship Miyamoto as some sort of god when all he did was have inital ideas for core mechanics in TWO franchises in their very early days. Everything else that made """"his"""" series good ever since were ideas from other people.
It's because of his crazy ideas that his games(most) are good. While not all his ideas work he isn't afraid to take chances.
Its not specifically soda popinski's laugh, its just the punch out laugh in general, you can hear the same laugh when you lose to bald bull, mr sandman etc.
This channel is REALLY running out of ideas.
I hope the final boss of Breath of the Wild is Gannon...not Gannondorf.
2 Ns? #Triggered
nypad5 well he is referred to as "Calamity Ganon". So I'm betting we'll see Ganon and not crenando.
Ganon fucked Zelda
Couldn't you have used the reworked version of the game over screen of Zelda II? Because you know... The flashing isn't very pleasant
Never liked Ganondorf. Ganon is where it's at!
I'm surprised that you mentioned Hakai being from Journey to the West but not Bull Demon King, the father of a villain named Red Boy and also the blood bound brother of Wukong (blood as in blood pact)
Did you know Ganon's Up-Tilt causes high amounts of salt?
the full things of legend of zelda games full of interesting theory!!
The laugh was originally used in Kung-Fu long before Punch Out.
Ganon's name always reminded me of gamon, which is a kind of pork.
Ganon's weakness - Useless items
*Ok, so we would've been able to climb a giant Ganon in Ocarina of Time, we would've been able to attack his weak points, BUT...would we have been able to attack his weak points for MASSIVE DAMAGE with GIANT ENEMY CRABS nearby???*
Here’s hoping they change up Ganondorf’s moveset in Smash soon...
3:12 Secret Boss? He wasn't secret, he was the TRUE final boss. There was nothing secret about it. The way you encountered him was by playing a continuation of the first game (either Oracle of Ages, or Oracle of Seasons, whichever you play first) in the second, unlocking the rest of the story.
I had used to believe that ganondorf’s name was pronounced canondorf
