"Of Matter" is from TesseracT's second album, "Altered State". They had a different singer on that one, Ashe O'Hara, who's now with Voices From The Fuselage. The singer on the first, third and fourth album is Daniel Tompkins.
I liked Ashe, but I feel like his voice works SO much better with his other projects. Daniel and Alec ARE Tesseract as far as I'm concerned. Drums and bass can come and go and it wouldn't change the overall feel of the band. Change the vocalist or lead guitarist and you'll have a totally different band.
I love Tesseract. It feels like they write music with an artistic purpose. The music is not only atmospheric and groovy, but also exciting because of the unconventional and yet nuanced musical tools they use. "One" is the heaviest tone-wise, a really amazing debut album. "Altered State" is probably the most technically ambitious,."Polaris" is the lightest and grooviest, and "Sonder" probably the most story-driven. Great reaction videos!
Its funny how the song kinda messed up in the video then the singer says "somethings not right". Tesseract is so good man. They did a live lockdown performance where all the musicans recorded their own parts seperately and combined them in one video. I highly suggest it. Will you be checking out Frost/Hail from Uneven Structure for this revisiting week? :)
I recommend checking out something from their newest album "Sonder". "Juno", "Smile", and "Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image" are all fantastic, but you can't really go wrong with anything off of that album :)
Thanks for including the link to Of Matter. I always loved that performance, and Altered State remains my favorite Tesseract album due in large part to Ashe's vocals.
Discovered this band last year and they quickly became my favourite. Everything they've done is absolutely amazing. From the harsher earlier album to the softer Polaris and especially Altered State which completely changed they way percieve rhythms.
Altered State definitely made me understand the way rhythm is perceived and has given me a totally new outlook on how I make my music. Honestly AS is my fav album
I'm glad you enjoyed it! TesseracT is legit my favorite band. "Polaris" (the album this song, Utopia, is on) is my favorite album by them. Every one of their albums is so vastly different than the previous. They're so melodically and rhythmically adventurous. You should definitely listen to more of them!
Would highly recommend you to check out their latest album - Sonder. It's kinda a blend of their other 3 albums and a great introduction to what the band is about.
Not a track most hardcore fans would suggest but it's s cool choice. Glad you got to hear Dan on vocals vs Ashe now Yeah, this is the ONLY song of theirs with that ending and most the hardcore fans are meh on it lol All albums are great.
Oh and since you're just consuming their music for pleasure now.. ua-cam.com/video/H8bNzSr2zdw/v-deo.html Their recent lockdown performance is a must watch!
Please check out “Rivers of Nihil.” Specifically “The Subtle Change Including the Forest of Transition and Dissatisfaction Dance.” The song is soooo good.
Tyler Schnabel he might be re-visiting them! he’s done one song of theirs before & the subtle change has been suggested quite a few times before. if u like them u should check out burial in the sky. it’s my friend’s band & the guy who does sax for rivers of nihil also does sax for burial in the sky 🖤
Just found your channel, and love how you go more in depth on the musical aspects as well as your general reaction to the music. A band that would be awesome to see is Sleep Token. Either The Offering, Jaws, or Nazareth. All are amazing songs.
Been asking for Sleep Token since I believe Feburary lol, they're on his giant list of bands to get to. My birthday's later this month maybe Brian can pull some strings 😂🤷♂️
I just recently went through Tesseract's and Periphery's discography. Enjoyed both bands, though I give Tesseract the edge as I like how they're able to do this djent/math-metal hybrid sound, genres that are generally considered technical and unemotional, and find a way to inject real emotion into it. Really enjoy the funky rhythms on this one.
I genuinely hate when people compare tesseract with periphery, i get that periphery's music is kinda good (I just like the instrumentals of their music) but like TesseracT's music is waaayyy freaking better regarding the mixing, screaming, and singing plus the lyrics and over all performance imo.
I didn't know that people would compare the two. I enjoy both bands a great deal but I don't really see any similarities outside of both technically belonging to the same genre. Both bands have very different sounds and feels to me and I would never think to sort them together though.
@@CriticalReactions I have a habit of exploring genres by just throwing the discographies of the "major bands" on a playlist and going through them at work, so comparisons are inevitable (for me) just because I'm listening to them back-to-back. Right now I'm going through some early prog I haven't heard--Van Der Graaf Generator, Moody Blues, Camel, Caravan--and these bands sound absolutely nothing alike either despite all being the "same genre."
Channeling his inner Mike Patton there at the end, I love that part..

Well, this made me finally check out this album and... whoa. Very beautiful stuff! I know this singer from Skyharbor - somewhat similar mood/feel, but very different (also very cool).
So sad that your video for Between the Buried and Me - The Grid was blocked. It was most likely because Automata I and II were released on Sumerian Records. Hope you enjoyed it though.
So glad you linked the reaction to Of Matter here, I remembered you mentioning that you've reacted to Tesseract before and hoped it was Of Matter. Love how much you enjoyed it! If you're going to look into picking up their albums, I'd definitely start with Altered State. It's the album Of Matter is off and is an absolute masterpiece front to back.
Another great band! I think their latest album Sonder is by far their best. Feels like Djent has come and gone but TesseracT has found a way to remain relevant.
Great reaction. Anthony Kiedis is the vocalist for RHCP, and the comparison is spot on. Dan has a diverse vocal skillset that fits well with Tesseract.
All three singers they have had are great singers. I do think I like Daniel the best. They are also great live. Been a couple years since I have seen them, hopefully will get to again.
The ending is just a rehash of the first pre-verse section, the second pre verse is different so i guess it's natural not to remember on first listen but the end gets tied in early on
at this point I'm finding more bands than you're checking out that I may have requested 😂😂 killer, can't wait for what comes next \m/ 6:14 I wasn't expecting red hot chili peppers either , also sounds alot like rage against the machine lol
There's no clean break between rock and metal. Metal is usually just rock with more distortion, speed and complexity, but what is/isn't metal has also changed over time as the genre's evolved. I dig what you say about enjoying tech/prog-lite. I also love extreme prog/tech stuff, but sometimes your brain does need a break and stuff like this is a good middle ground of interesting musicality (not intellectually boring) without being too demanding. That's also why I love the neo-classic prog bands like Transatlantic, Flower Kings, and Big Big Train as they hearken back to when classic prog was complex but also accessible. I'd highly recommend Transatlantic's My New World, Flower Kings's There Is More to This World, and Big Big Train's Judas Unrepentant for a good sampling.
Personally I think 'Altered State' (where Of Matter comes off of) is the perfect album to listen to (& just in general lol), everything from composition to Mixing/Mastering is 100% spot-on front to back (plus you get a sick Sax Solo provided by Chris Barretto from Monuments/Ever Forthright). They haven't had quite the same tone since then & it's kinda been of a let down imo cause that album set the bar so high for me haha. TesseracT has gone through some slight style changes throughout the years depending on which vocalist they had, each bringing their own flavor. -Earlier mid-00's Demo era TesseracT has a bit more of a Metalcore/Meshuggah edge to it & more prominent harsher vocals from their first 2 vocalists Julien Perier & Abisola Obasanya. -Daniel Tompkins was their vocalist during their first "professional" releases 'Concealing Fate'/'One' (still keeping the harsh vocals), then briefly left the band (joining the bands White Moth Black Butterfly/In Colour/Skyharbor). -Elliot Coleman joined in for 'Perspective,' an EP of (mostly) acoustic renditions of earlier songs, then he booked it shortly after the EP's release (& went on to join the band Good Tiger). -Ashe O'Hara took over for the 'Altered State' era, keeping the sans-harsh vocal approach from the previous release & left after touring that album (later joining the band Voices From The Fuselage) -Afterwards Daniel Tompkins rejoined the band for 'Polaris' & has been their main vocalist pushing their sound since.
I guess "Polaris" is the best one to start with, but for the variety I recommend "One", especially "Concealing Fate" which is a close to half an hour listen split into 6 parts which you do not wish to listen to separately (vocals consist of more screams). I also recommend singer's side project "White Moth Black Butterfly" (not metal at all, just prog-pop, I'd say) as well as the band "Skyharbor" where Dan used to sing, esp. song "Guiding Lights" or beautiful ballad "Patience". He does solo stuff worth checking too!
For some interesting and fun metalcore I'd suggest Oceans Ate Alaska, either Escapist or Hansha, the drummer is literally one of the best in scene it's insane
Dude, you need to check out ‘ concealing fate’ same studio set up as ‘ Of matter’. From their first album ‘One’. It’s 27 minutes long though it’s basically 6 part track. It’s amazing. Like ‘Of matter’ is actually three tracks. Btw the album which ‘Of matter’ is on ‘Altered state’, is my personal favourite of theirs. One of my favourite albums of all time. It’s also the only album to feature Ashe O’hara on vocals.
I would've never thought of tesseract as "fun or funky" and I'm kinda offended by you saying it, nah but seriously they're my favorite band and there music is literally chilling and heavy at the same time, the mixing and Dan's voice are both amazing imo.
You should check out Celldweller, it might be not that complex musically, but he has some pretty fun songs. I would reccommend you Own Little World or Birthright.
Hey Bryan another great reaction thank you! I have to ask you if you can react to a simply stunning Prog masterpiece, by a band called "Aviations" the track in mind is "Outliers" and it is a stunner my friend.
Hey Brian it would be amazing if we could get to have your input on a track called 'The Black Lodge' by In Mourning, it's off of Shrouded Divine, their first full-length, it's a fun combination of Melodic Death Metal with some Progressive and gothic-esque elements thrown into the mix! By the way, love your work, keep it up 🤘🏼
I have a few requests from bands wanting me to check out there new stuff and I've finally found a way to do that. With any luck I'll be able to check out In Mourning sometime this month so keep an eye out for that one.
i get why you would think the flowing part at the end reminds you of RHCP... but honestly RHCP doesnt have half the talent of TesseracT. Keidis sucks, and an amateur compared to any of TesseracT's singers, especially Dan Tompkins.
“i believe the cool kids are calling that djent these days” 😂😂😂
That was great!!!🤣🤣🤣
🙄🙄🙄😂

Will you be checking out Frost/Hail from Uneven Structure for this revisiting week? :)
That is such a great performance. It’s pretty much perfect in every way!
*Awaken/Frost/Hail. That intro... idk it really sets the stage.
Also the part where he mentions how the atmosphere has a creeping danger feel as the singer says "I can sense the danger"
I recommend checking out something from their newest album "Sonder".
"Juno", "Smile", and "Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image" are all fantastic, but you can't really go wrong with anything off of that album :)
All good choices but lemme fall under your comment and suggest Juno! Such a good jam
Thanks for including the link to Of Matter. I always loved that performance, and Altered State remains my favorite Tesseract album due in large part to Ashe's vocals.
This album is their best work, in my opinion.
This song is the grooviest song on earth in my opinion 😂
Altered State is their most impressive work. Polaris is my fav tho
Discovered this band last year and they quickly became my favourite. Everything they've done is absolutely amazing. From the harsher earlier album to the softer Polaris and especially Altered State which completely changed they way percieve rhythms.
Sonder is amazing too!
Altered State definitely made me understand the way rhythm is perceived and has given me a totally new outlook on how I make my music. Honestly AS is my fav album
Still needs to react to anything from the One album from these guys. NEEDS TO
Talking to you Bryan. 👍🏼
Thanks mate 😁👌🏼

Hexes or King by Tesseract are epic.
I fucking love this album. My band got to open up for them back when they toured this record, Tesseract is such a great band.

paravarium I hope he reacts to the entire video.
Dang dude I guessed you polled the hardcore fans huh? What makes one a hardcore fan?
I mean... hardcore fan here. This song is one of my favorite from them. Tier list
1. Exile
2. April
3. Smile
4. Utopia
5. Singularity
@@collinsnow2203 very solid top 5 👌

Yebs
Tyler Schnabel if you haven’t. Checked out anything from their two previous albums i urge u to.
He’ love them, especially those tracks!
great to see you giving these guys a second look
you should try out some Monuments soon, since the two bands are closely related

Have you ever done the band "Slice the Cake?" You should totally check them out. The song The Mountains of Man
This base slap is so amazing seeing it live
What about the Steve Wilsons solo project: Luminol Live. Or the Aristocrats! Or even the Mars Volta
Bro you gotta do Tesseract live in the lockdown. So fucking good.
You should do Earthside - A Dream in Static. It features Dan Tompkins (Tesseract's singer) as a guest vocalist and he absolutely kills it!
Love that song! Got to see Earthside live too. Great concert with Leprous.
YES!!! TesseracT!!! One of the best bands to ever exist!❤️🤘

you should've done Seven Names or Hexes. Keep it up Brian, great work !!
Lmao I always wondered why that last bit sounded familiar, hit it right on the head with RHCP 😂
Tesseract are definitely one of the most 'sophisticated' metal bands I would argue ever, making huge strides for the genre
Strongly recommend Tesseract - Hexes ft. Martin Grech live in the studio

27 minutes would be the longest reaction on this channel. Sounds like I might need to get on this -- especially if it's from Tesseract!
You gotta do "Hexes". That's like their best song.
Yes the song really does end in RHCP
I would definitely say start with the first album and go from there.
Nascent is a cool one as well : >
Edit: its from the first album and IMO its their best.
Please check out Mallable - Unprocessed from the Unprosession. Really talented prog guys.
Hi, please react to Covenant by Soen.
I would've never thought of tesseract as "fun or funky" and I'm kinda offended by you saying it, nah but seriously they're my favorite band and there music is literally chilling and heavy at the same time, the mixing and Dan's voice are both amazing imo.
Please do either Earthside - Contemplation of the beautiful or Deadly Circus Fire - Universe. Thank you!
Please revisit ELUVEITIE :) King, Inis Mona, Epona, Ategnatos, Omnos...IMO some of there best songs.
yesssss
You should check out Celldweller, it might be not that complex musically, but he has some pretty fun songs. I would reccommend you Own Little World or Birthright.
Also Rings of Saturn, Septicflesh, Fear Factory, Enter Shikari, and two less known bands, At The Night I Fly, and Skyblood. 😊
That rap Section def has some RHCP Vibes. Personally it gave me Faith No More Vibes🤷♂️
Glad im not the only one who always gets Faith No More vibes
Hey Bryan another great reaction thank you!
I have to ask you if you can react to a simply stunning Prog masterpiece, by a band called "Aviations" the track in mind is "Outliers" and it is a stunner my friend.
You're not the only one asking for that specific song so I'd wager they'll make it on the channel at some point.
Would love to see you react to Karnivool - Goliath or New Day.

Dude, you hit this reaction perfectly on the head. Nice job!
Please do TesseracT Eden, the original 9 minute version.
This song in particular sounds like a fusion of Tool and Incubus ngl.
I’m glad you checked out this song. It’s an under rated song. Usually people just react to Hexes, which is a great song but it’s so overdone now.
Im honestly surprised you compared the last vocal section to RHCP. I always associate it with Faith No More
It felt like more of a call back to Mike Patton(Faith No More), rather than Red Hot Chill Peppers to me.
Bryan If you like the more "easy to listen stuff" like Utopia than pick up Polaris first it is great
Maybe I'm crazy but I feel a bit of a tool vibe during sections of this song.
Bass is driving the beat, drummer is using polyrhythms throughout, guitar uses ambience to build up the song. Makes sense
Smile
Please try haggard!)
Polaris is their best album
Definitely go in order of release. Do all recordings. No live shit. Please.
I'm early and have nothing clever to say, please boo me
I feel ya.. eagerly watching lol
booo
Start with Polaris
i get why you would think the flowing part at the end reminds you of RHCP... but honestly RHCP doesnt have half the talent of TesseracT. Keidis sucks, and an amateur compared to any of TesseracT's singers, especially Dan Tompkins.
at what point you can call yourself a composer? asking for a friend.
More TesseracT !!!
