First oil change on 2021 Yamaha RMAX 1000 XT-R (step by step)

- Well, 51 miles on the old piece... Time to change the factory fill. Certainly not the most easy oil change I've done... So make sure you watch the video and that way you're prepared... There are 5 total drains to pull and then the filter. You might need some tools. I'll post Amazon affiliate links below. Next time I do this, I'm not even going to mess with the oil cooler lines. I'll just dump the oil from the tank and engine. Add 2 quarts to engine fill and then 2 quarts to oil tank and call it good. Please make sure that you're using genuine Yamaha parts and filters. They really don't cost that much and they are made for the machine you're working on! Any questions, just ask! Thanks for watching!

Yeah, that is WAY too much! Once you change the oil a few times, you'll see it isn't that bad of a job. I know the 4 seater is a bit more tricky, but I'm a big believer in trying to do your own maintenance, that way you know it's done properly. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
I just picked up my R Max 4 yesterday. Have not even drove it yet. I am setting up my 4 post lift first before even drive my machine so I can be ready for services. Great video. Does not look too horribly bad to me

I pick mine up Thursday! First service is 20 hours according to dealer, then 100 hours. I purchased the 4 year bumper to bumper warranty for 1,800, a windshield with wiper, and rear view mirror. Will get the winch and spare tire in a couple of months. Cannot wait!
Sounds good! I am still on the fence about the YES warranty. I have time to purchase it still, so I just may get it since this is a pretty expensive and new machine... I too will get a spare for it! Looking forward to more mods! Thank you for watching!

MN oh man I thought my X3 oil change was tedious 😆. Lord have mercy. Still would love to add a Rmax to my collection. Always have a soft spot for yamaha as I grew up with them. This is the unit I've been waiting for them to make.

Cool beans bro, you'll shave that time down by half next change and some more off of it the time after that. I agree with you on the cooler lines, I don't think I'd be messing with them especially after a year or two. Doesn't look like a lot of metal there, after a couple hundred heat cycles, in and out a couple dozen times, threads could get sketchy LoL. Oil and filters are cheap compared to an engine job. Change it often, should not ever have a sludge issue. I am impressed with the 4 liter capacity and an oil cooler. Best of luck.

This is the most reliable oil system you can get for engine longevity though. A reservoir/pump garuntees even oil distribution and lubrication even when you're on a steep incline!
An oil pan and pump from the bottom doesn't do much when you're going up a steep climb. All the oil is at the back of the engine starving the engine of oil up front.

Damn. Just bought one of these. Been changing oil on a Polaris ranger 1000 xp. Takes 10 minutes total. 1 bolt, very easily accessible oil filter. This looks like real pain in the ass. And changing oil after 50 miles? I put 77 on mine the day I got it. Lol. I’ll do my first one at 25 hours. Every 75 after that. Very helpful video. Now I can do this with no instruction manual! Thank you.

Yeah, oil changes sort of suck on this thing, sounds like the Ranger was SUPER easy, I like that! And when you make it easy to do, you'll do it more often... @@Van1018s Oh yeah, Yamaha was really swinging for the fences with the RMAX, I'm very impressed with it and most people are blown away when they take mine for a spin.
Drinking a beer eating pizza using the pc to look up the how To's in the shed/garage. All men need their man cave. Having an awesome UTV to work on now that's living. Sounds like a fun time to me. There's not that many RMAX owners posting there videos online. There has to be a lot of owners these buggy's look very capable in their stock form. From my research on the different types of sport UTV's the RMAX looks to be the best. There are a lot of reviews after you've seen one talking about all the features you really need a owners review to get a sense what you're spending 20k. My local dealership will let me drive the Buggy around the parking lot and some of the dirt roads nearby. I told them bring a ranger xp 1000, the general xp 1000 and this rmax 2 out to my property you all can ride have a blast. I'll drive each one of them by the end of the day I'll know exactly which machine I want to buy. Guess that is beyond their abilities. I told them I got a go pro and autonomous drones send these units out I'll review them for your dealership with a farmer's perspective. Have your mechanics tell me about the break in period. I can follow the guidelines. It's an untapped market. Every farmer needs an ATV or side by side we just work hard for our money and have learned to make do with what we got. Most of us buy used cheaper models that get the job done. We got phones and internet access, so we've got an eye on the best UTV's/ATVS, but we'd rather spend the money on something farm related. Doesn't mean we are cheap with no money to spend on a new side by side. It just means we don't want some snake oil and fancy words trying to convince us to buy one. Listening to those guys talk makes me want to punch them in the mouth. When I'm ready to buy I don't need convincing. If we got a buddy or neighbor that farms with a new side by side, we'll ask about that get his or her opinion drive it and if we like most of the time we drive to town and buy one. In my opinion dealerships should find a way to work with landowners to showcase the models that are currently in the market. As a farmer I've been raised to treat equipment with respect cause I'm the one fixing it, so we drive ATVs/UTVS at a controlled pace knowing its limits not pushing those. My ATV is 5 years old starts like a new one I've had it in the mud, rain, snow to Colorado 3x. What breaks I fix nothing major great machine. Every friend that I've got that is a farmer who owns a side by side or ATV they don't rip around on it full on every time to see how fast it can go or if it's a good rock climber. What we care about is it reliable, can it mud and get me to my pivots, how's the ride quality, is it simple for maintenance, are the parts expensive? is there aftermarket support to modify to make it better. What is the customer support like at the dealership and company? How's the warranty? I wouldn't dare take my pickup to check a pivot, but I'll take my ATV. We use it as an extension of ourselves to maximize the efficiency of our operation. The only thing else to get you to a pivot is a tractor that's 4wd the ruts left are huge, so we drive our ATV's and Side by sides. Every time I get a smile on my face it's fun to rip it. Worse thing about mudding is the power washing afterwards. Maybe I'll get smart and use my drones to observe the pivots. I got land to be used for UTV/ATV riding because I ride ATVS all over it. Made my own trail system here along the river and all across all pasture property's that is actually a fun ride. They want me to spend 20k+ on one of these machines I'm going to need a push in that direction. I want reviews from owners that drive these buggies.
Thank you so very much for the comments! I agree with you 1000% on everything, reviews from REAL people are worth more than anything else. I too live in farm country (and thank you by the way for being a farmer) and I make sure to tell all of my farm friends what works and what doesn't. This RMAX has been one hell of a great machine. I don't think I'd want to use it day in and day out on a farm, but it could do it. This machine is VERY capable and has been clawhammer reliable. I haven't had to fix anything on it, just basic maintenance. Most of the Japanese machines are like that. They just keep going, unless your abusing the machine. Even the best more rugged stuff can break with a jackass behind the wheel.
Soon, I'll be making a video about the RMAX, long term, since I'v e had it for almost 4 years now compared to a Kawasaki KRX that we acquired about 5 months ago. Check the oil before you drain it , then measure how much drained out . Just a suggestion , I would love to have one of these , too many toys now.

I can get it down to about 30 minutes or so... The oil filter for some reason likes to get tighter every time however, so you need to bust out gorilla strength to get it off...

Who at Yamaha thunk this up. A 5 pt. oil drain. Come on Yamaha. For what you are charging for these thigs you could have plumbed all of the engine and cooler drains together to one low point drain and just put petcocks at each drain local.

You really don't have to drain the oil cooler lines, I feel like that is a waste of time. So then it would just be the 2 at the bottom of that crank case and then the oil tank. Not terrible, but not quick and easy. What is this new Kawi?
when u buy the yamahalube kits they come with the gaskets.

You can also get copper washers pretty cheap at any automotive supplier.

Excellent machine! No issues at all, everything is still tight and solid, CVT is perfect, no issues. Keep in mind, I don't do mudding or abuse it too hard. It's been a great machine! Thanks for watching!
Did you do the Yamalube warranty. 20 years 5000 hours or 100,000 miles. I have 2 Yamaha's on that warranty.
I didn't know that there was a Yamamlube warranty! I'll have to investigate that out for sure! Thank you! I know that I'll be using Yamalube oil in the engine for sure. Not sure how it's regarded in the utv side of things, but its reputation is fairly poor in the atv world (at least for Raptors). Might be fine for non-clutched machines, I don't know, but it doesn't do manual clutch plates any favors. But I suppose being a cvt, it's probably fine as it's all internal at that point.

You haven't changed oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000 5 seater before. This looks easy! 😅 3 drain plugs, and both filters are behind metal covers held on by 3 screws each and a spring behind the cover pushing in on the filter.
I'll have to watch a video about that one! I don't why OEM's don't think about us guys doing the damn maintenance! I guess it really isn't all that bad on the RMAX.

Nice work, cometary was right on. I have a stupid question. If you disconnected the struts on the dump box will it go back further? Possibly use a ratchet strap to hold in place. You might get some additional head room. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching! I got the service manual directly from Yamaha, not a cheap book, $100!!! Wayyyyy to expensive IMO, but I wanted to have it since I plan on keeping this machine for a long time and I do all my own maintenance.

@@bertpritchett317 Oh man, I guess I didn't mention, yes, ordered it on-line right off Yamaha's website. Took a few weeks to get it, since I guess it's a print to order deal. But yeah, if you are going to keep the machine like me, for sure order a copy, it's a good manual!
@@BarnStangz thank you. Are you have any issues with the gear shift selector when I go from reverse to low it shifts in the slot and when I give a little as it moves the shifter forward 1/2"or so. I let the dealer do the first service and go over everything . It wasn't doing it when I took it to them. I see the 2019 x2 and 4 do this but my x2 never did. But my rmax just started I only have 22 hours on it. How about yours?
@@bertpritchett317 No issues with shifting, I do make sure I'm at a complete stop and then even sometimes, I have to give it a bit of gas to engage, but not all the time, depends on the terrain I guess. Hope that makes sense. I have 60 hours on mine. They are fairly hard hours. But no issues, it's been a solid machine, I'm sure you'll get good service out of it. Not a bad idea to have the dealer check things out just to be sure. I know that some times shifters can just be a bit weird with engagement.

It’s only 4.39 quarts when you change filter
While that's what the book says, you might not get all the oil out of the line and sump. Having said that, I'll dump two into the engine and two and a quarter into the oil tank next time. Should be good. I'm glad that this machine holds a lot of oil, lots of lubrication is key to longevity! Thank you for watching!
Take an extra five minutes & remove the right rear inner fender. It needs cleaning in there anyways. & ALWAYS use new crush washers, Just sayin'...
Paul, thanks for watching! I normally use fresh crush washers, and I've now ordered a whole bunch for the oil drain plug and diffs. You should see how weird looking the crush washer is for my Nissan Maxima, it really does CRUSH when you torque it! Thanks again for watching, appreciate it!
What a pain in the butt. Yamaha could have done a little better on drain location of the oil tank to prevent a mess.
Depending how much oil drains out of the oil cooler lines would determine if I drained them next time.

Why in gods name are there 5 drain points? That is ridiculous. For crying out loud, why do these manufactures/engineers keep making things even more difficult to work on. Oh that's right. Because you help pay those franchise fees every time you take it to a dealership or certified shop to get work done. Never mind. Rant over.
100% man, for sure! But yeah, I'm not even messing with the oil line bolts, just going to do the tank drain and then the sump, dump in 4.24 qts total (2 in the engine, 2.25 in the tank) and call it good. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
I’m sorry ….but that’s a poor design. 4.5quarts!! Must have some other reasons for that amount. Not your shade tree mechanic oil change. My wife could change the oils in my truck. But not this one.
