I also think brake boosting is better for the car. Considering these have a wet clutch, I would imagine that using race start intentionally slips the clutch for its 4000 RPM launch. Obviously there is a little slipping going on with brake boosting, but if you're doing it only for a half second like I did in the video, I would imagine that is less wear on that clutch. Now if you're sitting at a light brake boosting for 10 seconds that's a different story
With the brake boost your car is already preloaded. With the race start you have to transfer power/ load the suspension and actually move forward. It is rather violent and “shocks the system “ so to speak. Very useful in RWD platforms with a radial, not so much on AWD with run flat tires lol. just my .02¢
Amazing platform I had a 2015 CLS63S and it shared the same engine and it was a beast once it got a pair of downpipes and pump tune. 0-60 3.2 & 1/4 11.2 the one thing this car slacked in was the transmission even with my TCU tune it was still sluggish. I’ve now upgraded to a 2019 E63S with the 4.0 & 9speed and I’ll tell you it’s as quick as my stage 2 M157 engine in stock form. Shifting is lightning fast in S+ and it’s just an overall better car interior/tech. That bark the m157 engine had was hard to beat, my new AMG pops way more and is much more fun to drive but since it’s missing 1.5 displacement it doesn’t sound as aggressive but sounds really good.

The part you mentioned about the delay in RS is very true too. Again, this is why I experimented on my own with Brake boosting and RS. Very boticeable difference, even without showing numbers! Another fun one is brake boosting while doing a roll race. Talk about torque!
Never tried the brake boosting while rolling but I would imagine that would be very effective. No torque converter, it's a wet clutch. So too my surprise I have not seen/heard of a single failure of the wet clutch on these. And even if they did, it's a $400 part. Crazy
great video and explanation of the launch options on the E63 / W212 AWD! Quick question, what RPM did you launch at when you brake boosted? if stock you're typically safe launching at 2200-2500 RPM but if tuned then wouldnt go above 1500-ish otherwise you'll risk output shaft snapping. Also think your Race Start launch was "invalid" per Dragy due to the slope being > minus 1 degree but I know sometimes Dragy can report inconsistent slope even on repeated runs on same stretch.
I definitely don't want to slip the clutch too long while holding the brake. I shoot for letting off the break as soon as it gets close to 2200. I actually can hear the turbos and that's when I know it's ready. Of course it's kind of hard to be super precise if you're doing it quickly. All the runs were done on the same stretch of road, I had to switch phones and so it didn't download the data I guess and it showed it as invalid. But yes sometimes it shows a slope and other times it doesn't show slope on the exact same road.
Watch the video dipstick. And you’ll see the rpm. It’s difficult to see what the race start launched at but I think it’s near 4k rpm but drops down to near 3300 once rolling. Race start is. To the quickest way to get great runs on these.

What RPM did you break boost? Looks like you let go at 2K. Have a 2014 E550 tuned want to try this on. Idle launch I got 3.8 hoping for better since no race start.
I'd estimate around 2200 on that one. I really don't like to hold it very long, it takes a little practice to nail it . My best time probably was around 2,300 RPM. I got a 3.3 flat. But like I said, If you go above 2500 rpm., the engine completely cuts out and goes to idle for a couple seconds, it'll scare you LOL

The stupid 1ft roll out was brought out in 2016 or 17. Vehicles are doing between 5-7 mph by then. And 1 ft is barely 2/10ths of a sec or basically 3.3 sec vs 3.5 sec. And as slow as this cars 7 and MCT trans is, almost 1.2 seconds worth of time just shifting from 0-60, these cars would likely run 3.2 or even 3 sec flat if the trabs would shift quicker. I see now why everyone loves the 9 spd in the 2018 MY cars. They do have 50 lbs less weight and 40 ho and 45-50 lb ft more torque too. But geeez the 9 spd is amazing. Imagine a 7 spd MCT with a really good tune in a 2014-17' E63S or CLS63S and about 620 hp instead of 550 hp/531 tq. Sorry, I forgot too thst the E63S had the full 577 hp/590 tq while the CLS63S has the 550 hp/531 tq which would explain why the more svelte, luxurious CLS63S is slower to 60, to 100 and 1/4 and 0-130, 0-150.... heck above 100 the old 2012-2013 models with the P30 performance pack with 550 hp and RWD would pull ahead of newer AWD models. But in all seriousness, I've got a budget in mind and I've been looking for months, so no big deal to continue the search if this one doesn't work out. I''m also actively considering two other vehicles, so we're just gonna see how it all plays out. My preference would be one with less miles, as it will be my DD and I drive a lot but you can't have it all, lol. And yes, I do have a CTS-V wagon currently. Bought with 18K miles on it and now has 95K... like I said, I drive and enjoy them. I'd ask if you want to buy it and do me the favor of not driving the price up on the E63, lol, but I've already got a buyer for it. How about this, you let me snag the E63 and then I'll continue watching and supporting your channel?! ;) "See you" tomorrow!
@@CarCrazyRDM yeah, if you look back at all the history on BaT and CbB, looking at the prices of all the wagons that have currently sold, you may have already made the winning bid. This one does have more miles than I'd like, and to be completely honest, that Matte paint kind of worries me the more I read about it. It looks good, but basically seems like if there's any defects, you can't fix them like you would on normal paint.
Sounds like we're in the exact same boat, I've got a bunch of cars around the country I'm looking at, none of them just pushed me over the edge yet
@@ExoticCarDIY I can wish all day that $55K is gonna get it but not a chance. Any of the historical bids older than maybe 6 months unfortunately don't mean a lot in this crazy market. My guesstimate... very low end $60K, high end maybe $70K. Then there's that damn 5%...doh! I actually talked to the owner of this car before it was on BaT and he only had it listed on Auto Trader. But when I did he had already committed it to BaT and I had another car I was chasing. I'll be curious to see if he makes out better or worse with BaT. He told me then he actually thought he'd net less money but that BaT would keep him from dealing with tire-kickers and "drama." I guess we'll find out in about 30 hours! :)
What are you thoughts on a muffler delete on my M157 GLE63?
I would assume they're both muffler and resonators like the other m157 vehicles. I did something similar to a muffler delete on my e63. Minor, but nice sound increase. I would recommend it.
@@ExoticCarDIY I have 1 huge muffler and 1 resonator and 2 cats. Not sure why they couldn’t do a dual muffler system like your car.
@@jimmytran1870 interesting, not sure then. I like cars to sound good, that doesn't always mean loud. I'm sure someone has some sound clips
I could use some help for a friend and his E63S. It’s a 14’.
Prior to 2016 or so,the mags never used a 1 foot roll out.
Can you use brake boosting while under race start mode?
no, its just not set up like that. in RS you simply push the pedal all the way and the computer sets the rpm at a predetermined level.
@@ExoticCarDIY thanks for the reply, so when using RS mode, you dont need to push the brake at all?
@@jackeyzhu3702 you do.
To do race star:
come to a complete stop
Firmly depressed the brake
Put car into sport mode (traction control)
Turn mode knob to RS (race start)
The dash will ask you to confirm by pulling the right paddle once.
Push the gas all the way down up to 5 seconds I think
Let off break when you're ready to go
@@ExoticCarDIY so from an operation perspective, race start and brake boosting (when start the car) are essentially the same and the main difference is that when doing race start you need to switch to the delegated RS mode?
best e63
:)
What were the ambient temps and humidity when you did these tests.
Well, 500 rpm drop anyway in Race start. So technically race start should be the quickest. Odd.
And you didn’t say what the suspension and traction were in during the brake boost. I didn’t see sport or traction squiggly lit up in fuel/temp gauge so that must mean normal traction, correct?
Plus he didn't detail what set-up was used for the brake boost part at 4:38.
This video is kind of making reconsider buying a w204 c63 lol
I've always liked the way the w204 looked as well
Race start does not give u 557hp or 585hp direct the gearbox is electronicly delivering so much power so u wheels does not spin s u could hade like 500 HP on launch just So u dont spin bur brake boost all power directly my cls63 is the same
Is your car bone stock?
Yes
At 3.33 first launch in sport suspension mode, comfort handling and sport+ trans. Hmmmm. How can you be in comfort handling with sport suspension on? The handling is the suspension button and traction doesn’t cover any of those.
Race start seems to have half the rpm drop at the start.
Alot less weight and different gearing.
And folks if you are considering one of these or a CLS63S
Why you never respond to my comments or questions?
Mate, it’s you. That E63 S should pull a 3.3 all day and a 3.2 if you get it just right.
Give yourself a medal! You have the fastest bone stock E63 by far.
What is your draggy name? I'd love to see those Time slips
Um, mine is doing 3.3 .... 5:40 in the vid.
Having said that, I kind of agree with Mr E63, I've been following these for a long time I don't think I bones stock m157 has ever run 3.2s... and if they are, they've never posted proof.
Anyway, thanks for watching!
@@ExoticCarDIY
I’ve run 3.2 in mine many many times. I have a 2019 E63 S and I’m under 3 now.
Many things factor into it. Temperature, tires, the car itself, driver, etc.
You should be a little quicker is what I’m telling you. Keep practicing and try it with new tires, you’ll be surprised.
There is a UA-cam video of a W212 smoking a P85D at the drag strip. Trust me, the W212 can run 3.2/3.3.
@@e63-i3c
You’re a fool.
@@electriceyeslide5959well there's why, you have a completely different car than this video is about.
W212 vs w213
And a w-213 should be running about 3.1
