And this was absurd. I used touchscreens with my fingers all my life. Could be ATM's, Train ticket machines or even just my loyal Palm Tungsten in the early 2000's with my nails instead of the stylus.
This did not have multi-touch, nor did any other touchscreen at the time. The iPhone was also the first PHONE to be controlled by a touchscreen operated by your finger.
In May 1987, I drove a Buick Riviera as a rental while in Texas for my vacation. The on-board computer was a great device and the instantaneous miles-per-gallon feature alerted me at one point to a problem that I discovered to be a leaking tire. (I had to get a temp. plug for the tire while in South Padre Island.) Apart from that, the car was doing fine until the cruise control suddenly quit working while I was driving on I-37, near Corpus Christi. I hoped that those on-board computers would become standard features in all cars and trucks - it was almost ahead of its time back in 1987.
I sat in one of these at the 1986 Auto Show and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Actually made me want to own a Buick at 24 years old, but I bought a Trans Am instead.
My dad bought one of these when I was in my early teens (I was born in ‘ 74). It was brand new and I thought the digital displays were amazing. I’d never seen those in a car before. Dad loved American vehicles, he didn’t believe in buying “foreign” lol Thanks for the memories
Aha and 90 systems connect to on board computer so you could diagnose whats wrong - just watched computer chronicles 1985 (So they had in 1986 already !)
Holly shit😳😳😳 thats unbeliveable. Im from germany. Ive never sehen with Bord Diagnostic and Touch screen and this from 1987 😳😳😳😳😳. I love it and also shock it....🥰👍👌
Its common in cars from 2010. But i never knew it had been in 1980's, I read it in wikipedia under touchscreen. Amazing, You are so lucky to own that car.
And I have thought that only the French used to put crazy sci-fi stuff into their cars in the 1980s. I'm simply stunned i guess what - I want one of these! Reminds me of Knight Rider series a bit...
Ah, the Buick Graphic Control System. I have the same system in my 1988 Reatta. It's so much fun to just play around with that thing. And to drive! Plus it just looks so COOL! I much prefer that car than any car today. I see you have yours set to metric.
@lzgmyn Yes I agree that Buick was ahead of it's time!!!! That was in the mid 80's. I fell in love with that car when it came out. I was a kid & said I would get 1!. We'll i was close, I ended up gettin an 89 Oldsmobile Tornado. It was MINT!!!!
Not really, as I said in a previous comment, we haven't really evolved much at all in the past 40 years! People just tend to easily forget, and are duped by marketing gimmicks. For example, did you know that Nikola Tesla designed/invented one of the first electric vehicles over 100 years ago, before combustion engine vehicles were publicly available? The first cars were electric and known as horseless carriages and there was a fleet of electric taxi-cab carriages in New York City and in London, England
If you live near a forest they will chirp in the morning at 5-6 am (in my place), birds have a natural alarm clock in them even roosters shout in the morning.
@peepingjesus The Oldsmobile Toronado and The Eldorado had these features also. Costly if had to be fixed but very very nice cars. I had a 87 Toronado and a 90 Toronado. These cars are still around and if you can find one with low miles from the original owner or one that has not been around so much you will have one heck of a car cause the riviera and the toronado had the 3.8 liter engine which if taken care of can get 300,000 miles out of.
I just picked up one of these cars for $75.00 I wish it wasnt a total wreck, doesnt start as of yet, destroyed interrior and smashed windshield. That touch system is just so cool!
That's awesome you can turn the sound off, although I'd probably update the sound opposed to turning it off. I definitely think knight rider should have been a Buick though, this seems very knight rider appropriate. If only people would stop considering these things old people cars, buicks really are amazing, I miss my 97 park ave so much, I wanted to live in it, lol.
Proof that we haven't evolved in the past 40 years, we are stuck in the 80's Also, the bird calls sound awesome, is that in the background or overlayed to the video?
May be inconvient, slightly annoying at times... but overall freaking awesome. I want one... granted putting it into a car it wasn't meant for might be a chore *rubs hands together* but it would be so worth it
awesome technology for an '87. But man would I hate the "beep beep" after every single thing you do. Other than that, I could deal with the bad graphics of the touch screen.
We sure would like for you to comment on the Buick Reatta forum! forums.aaca.org/f116/ Some members are trying to reverse engineer some of the settings. For example, I have added the factory compass and some folks like to turn on the code to get the Canadian DRL's to run full time.
Stove jeebs: "the iPhone is the first ever touch screen device that doesn't use a stylus"
Buick: hold mah whiskey

hold my champagne
@@triple7marc That's also not true. The LG Prada was the first capacitive touchscreen phone, not the iPhone
I remember touch screens in the early 90s, they were poor but they existed
That still seems high-tech, even today! Cool car!
80's was such an awesome time!! Love the decade.

Lol its more responsive than todays Peugeot systems.
No
Yes, and easier to use, too!

I remember when these came out. I was positive this was the coolest thing that would ever be invented forever. Blew my mind.
Very nice and beautifull this Buick Riviera 87. This digital era from 1987

My mom had one of these when I was a kid. I always loved racing that on-screen car to our destination on vacations!
Thats badass!!! The beeping is so annoying though.
I assume you would be able to make it shut up byplugging one silly cable off though :D
@@nltr31 It can be muted by going to the Status screen, where the beep volume can be changed, along with the CRT and VFD brightness, etc.

Very cool and that bird is awesome too haha 👍🏻
Very cool. The latest issue of Popular Mechanics, Vol. 190, No. 5, brought me here. This is the first touch screen system in a production car (1986).
I am blown away... Touchscreen on 1980s car!! If only Americans kept the pace in car development...
Wow, a real CRT😮

So..... the touch screen in die hard was real then?
yup, sure was
Awesome touchscreen! No wonder touchscreens existed back then, hahaha!!
Gotta love the front wheel drive Rivearas. I got an 89 Im getting ready for demolition derby right now!!!
it's a Pip Boy, in a car.
Pretty much!
Anyone added the legendary compass module? They were pretty rare even in 87-89.
nice in 1986 when Buick Restyled the Riviera they putted a touch screen computer in the Riviera's until 89
Now there's some pure 80s shit. Really cool!

@Damian Chavez 1987, in which this technology in the days of the eighties was more advanced than the setback in the nineties
The beeping is causing birds outside the car to sing back! Amazing.
this is unbelievable. it puts it with the faulty but sometimes functional aston martin lagonda. no wonder the 1980s riv's have such a following too.
Never knew such technology even existed in 87.
Duh before 90s 80s was most advanced decade of last century
It was first introduced in 86
I just picked up one of these cars for $75.00 I wish it wasnt a total wreck, doesnt start as of yet, destroyed interrior and smashed windshield. That touch system is just so cool!
This car is very important-just for one feature.
Miss my 87 Rivera
the touch screen is very cool, the beeps i could do without though.
What amazing technology!!
What's funny it seems to be more user friendly then BMW's idrive.

The beep tone can be shut off in settings menu.
Very high-tech stuff for its age

impressive. had no idea tech was available back then. let alone CRT screens in cars O.O

How does it work? Is it like a grid of infrared light in front of the screen that gets disrupted wherever you place your finger?
kcin228 Yes. This is why the screen is "shunken" (to make room for the infrared)
No it uses the graphic vector of your finger to encode the metadata values of all common variables. It really was very futuristic
