Five Forbidden Words in the Vinyl Community

- This may be a thread? What are five words that are overused or that you are sick of hearing, or are misused - here in the glorious VC or #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords
Thanks to Shawn for the idea:
• Video
Which I stole.
Or borrowed.
Nice list of words. Mazzy is word I have never used. Pressing quite often, because I am in collecting. Wish to be music lover again.
I couldn’t agree with you more!! It seems like too many people in the vinyl community are obsessed with what pressing, who mastered it, who engineered it, forgetting to talk about the music on the vinyl !! Good video
Thanks for watching!
Hope all well Gregg. Love your honesty.
Haven't seen you in a long time! Doing OK?
Remember when you didn't know who mastered an album? When you judged an album by the music and the overall sound?
I agree - I can't keep all those engineers in my head. They can't turn mediocre music into a great album...
The "Vinyl" Community. As opposed to the fur or leather community? What happened to records or albums? Maybe the VC is a club for enthusiasts of house siding or shower curtains. Must we refer to things by what the things are made of? I promise you, there is no such thing as a new "film." On a related note, what proportion of time using a phone is used up with phoning? Enough. I'm off to bristle my enamels before the flesh gets home.
This is my own personal list of words that annoy - yours may differ. Or perhaps you are not as annoyed with life as I am! Thanks for watching.
The VC has certainly become cliqueish, and some are fine with it being exclusionary. But i agree with you that's lame. Good list.
I laugh when I hear it, it’s very embarrassing
I enjoyed your discussion of the phantom center channel. I love it when I'm playing a mono record and sitting in the chair which is perfectly positioned and it really does sound like there is only one speaker hidden somewhere behind my turntable. You would swear that no sound is coming out of the actual speakers on each side of the turntable.
I would guess that 90% of listeners have never heard this effect - true "stereo" - ie, vocals dead center and other instruments spaced around the sound stage. (stereo rec obv) Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. I just discovered your channel, and I subscribed!
Back in 2010, I was part of the vinyl community, one of the OGs I guess, and posted maybe 75-80 videos and then around 2014-2015 something happened and the focus changed and I decided to not post anymore and put all my videos on private. Your video remind me of the old school attitude and videos which was refreshing.
Thanks - come on back anytime!
I got a laugh on the first word you chose was VC. When I retired and started getting back into vinyl and I did a couple of searches on UA-cam, VC came up. Now for me, maybe unfortunately, that meant Viet Cong. And I got a huge laugh about a younger generation embracing VC in a positive way.
Just learned what audiophile meant 😂 music comes first! Glad I’m not the only one!
I totally agree. It should be about being a music fan not having ocd and having multiple pressings and color variations. But I prefer CDs over vinyl anyway. Vinyl became way too trendy and overpriced. I’ve been buying music for about 40 years. I’ve seen records fall to cassettes, cassets fall to CDs , and CDs fall to mp3 s. . Formats don’t matter to me the music does.( except mp3 s I at least want a physical copy to hold in my hands ) .
I'm fairly new to vinyl, and I agree with the pressing term. I got into this hobby to listen to the music I grew up with. I'm not a rich man and my set setup is what a lot would call entry level but I'm okay with that cause to me its better than I ever would of thought I would own. I have an early pressing of Zeppelin II and I don't play it nearly as much as this great album deserves simply because I don't want to scratch it or ruin it.
I managed to sit through 2 minutes of this.
Shawn is awesome. Cool of you to shout him out! Lots of people see vinyl collecting(or buying/flipping) as a financial venture/investment so maybe a financial term may be more appropriate for this place😂 Oh my goodness…I agree with you on every point here😂😂
Wow...that's a lot of air...🤢
@mathewpety7156 Be nice! 😀
I think the words and phrases that we VC hosts most overuse between shooting videos are as follows Aspercreme, Grecian Formula, Social Security, tinnitus and hernia staples.
Surprised that Preparation H didn't make your list! Or Doan's pills.
Hi Greg! It's been a while. I hope you are doing great. When you started with "VC" I was shaking my head in agreement. I'm constantly inundated with acronyms in my professional life, so in casual conversation outside of work I consciously try to avoid using them. That is why in all of my videos I say "vinyl community" in long form!
I like your point about listening to one's stereo equipment as opposed to the music. I can relate to that.
Amen to those 5 words and phrases. You hit the nail on the head. Subbed!
Thanks! Looks like I've been sub to your channel for a while - need to check it out again!
@@VinylRundown you’re not likely to hear me say any of these words. My most disliked is the way overused ‘holy grail’. What a load of s***. Personal opinion obviously 🙄
Unfortunately, I think "exclusion" seems to be a goal in some cases. But I hope I'm wrong. It's an interest topic - all these little terms that get used that actually confuse potential new comers. Good video and topic. Cheers.
It took me ages to realise what the words Vinyl Tag meant, I thought it alluded to those occasional bits of vinyl flash you get on the edge of new records, like skin tags. Heavy Rotation is another one, along with saying Dropped instead of Newly Released. To me dropped means removed, or discarded.
Someone should invent the vinyl skin tag... Thanks for watching!
Interesting video 🙂 If you have the words Vinyl Community in the video title or hashtag, I can't see how VC is a problem. Just look at the title. People always go for the shortest possible route, which is why nicknames are so common. Why say Robert when you can say Rob! Before being a "member" of the VC, I would have come up with nothing if asked what VC meant. Venture Capital would never have occurred to me. VCLT caused me to do some investigation, but the journey was a good one. Also, I had watched hundreds of videos before making any of mine (like many people), so I think we all get accustomed to the words early on. I think vinyl tag is actually great, because you see a video and then you are tagged. It has been (over)used on Facebook and other networks too. I think other platforms are worse and it takes time to get accustomed. If you are a photographer and participate in online photography venues, you will know what 'chimping" means, but no one else does, but I do not see that as not being inclusive. Sometimes, we just have to learn the lingo. My job is a veritable alphabet soup of acronyms and you simply need to learn it. BTW, the first time someone wrote FTW, i had no idea what it meant so I looked it up. Same is true for LOL. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and, despite what I just said, I don't disagree with you, but I don't agree either 🤔😳
Hey Brian. Rob is better than Robert. Im an expert on that topic 😂
@@NorthernRevolutions Ha ha. Sadly, my name has no short form, or at least not an acceptable one.
Just found your channel. Funny take on this topic! Subscribed!
Thanks Doc!
I just respond to interesting topics wherever I find them. I agree that it shouldn’t be taken for granted that everyone automatically knows what you’re talking about with all of the abbreviations and buzz words. Not into the fixation on pressings, equipment and sound as opposed to music either.
Maybe im taking this too literally but if using the term VC is non-inclusive then every acronym is non-inclusive. If someone doesn't know what it stands for, then they could ask and get introduced to it. The rest, i agree with you. Some people focus too much on pressings and audiophile items.
I’m 52, bought my first record (is that an acceptable word?) in 1975. I never knew about the “VC”, I’m glad I’m not a part of it because it sounds lame and I’m happy listening to CDs in my old truck.
Entertaining as always Greg cheers
There's some channels/people that are irritating, others I've gone off of. I'm glad you are having a sensible therapeutic moan i think it's a good thing. VC is good you can be in or out and i know a few show records and are definitely out. Doesn't bother me. The tags have gotten out of control this year they are some recycled themes so I've moved on and would rather just be myself.
Finally, someone with the bass to call it like it is.
Love the crabby old man talk! Keep it up. The term I am tired of is “OG” - this said I use it myself. Also the phrase, “it sounds awesome” without context or comparison is super annoying.
All hail to the VC!
I pay very little attention to pressing and whatnot. It plays music thats all i know!
I actually thought I WAS in the Vietcong community. I’ve spent the last 3 years wondering why people have been waving albums at me.
When I hear “Vc” I think of bamboo jail cells and mosquitos and ak47s
And there’s a difference between a repress and a reissue. The new PRESSING of Marquee Moon from Rhino is a reissue
If I hear reviewers use the term _'highly recommended'_ one more time, I'll......🤬🤬 🤗
I agree that audiophile is a word that people use where I'm not sure they understand what it means. Audiophile means lover of sound. Musicophile means lover of music.
Grail drives me nuts. Mofi and obi strip.
Grail - a big cup! Shoulda thought of that one. Thanks.
My pet peeve is O.G. That sounds like a 14 year old girl who just got grounded by her parents for cutting class and going to the mall. "O gee mom, O gee dad. That's so unfair!"
Not original gangsta? 😂
Funny...you talk about people not being inclusive and then turn around and exclude the "pressing" people? LOL IMO I would say if asking what VC means is to much of a chore then that is probably a person who will not be positive in the community in the first place lOL. Just sayin. What I actually find is that people asking what VC means or what VCLT mean is a great conversation starter. One of my closet friend here in the VC started with him asking me what VCLT meant. Inclusive should be about being welcoming to all avenues of music and music love. Probably not changing our language around to try and fit every new person bc I'm sure there will be 10,000 different ways people want that done. Just my two cents.
exclusionary and inclusive are overused everywhere.
What word do you prefer?
Those words have different definitions in a Marxist context which is how we normally encounter them.
@@tupacamaruiv5804 thats why “normal people” should take them back!
Here's one, High Definition? I thought that only applied to vidio?
Great video and good points! If you want to invite more people and make them apart of the vinyl community, don't make it a cliche club using abbreviations which may make new comers feel excluded. Great video! Really enjoy your videos.
Great video.
In addition to your point on pressings, the compulsive obsession with mastering engineers and pressing plants really bugs me.
Furthermore an abbreviation which took me some time to understand, IGD. Apparently it stands for inner groove distortion, which means the sound gets worse as you get closer to the center of the record.
Just a general rule in life: the first time you use an abbreviation in a text or a video, explain it. Don't assume everybody knows what you're talking about and using a lot of abbreviations doesn't make you look smarter.
And now I'm going to watch Shawns video 🙂
After that I'm going to listen to AOTY by FNM
Isn't it annoying having to figure out what AOTY by FNM means?
It is.....
Album of the year by Faith No More 🙂
@@derricktoppert8145 Yes, I googled it - TTYL! And good points!
VC to me is voice chat lol
Jargon is shorthand everywhere. Audio File. Audiophile, " sound lover."
Bravo... Bravo
Nice video. Thanks. Very interesting.
I'm pretty much not a VC guy, not because I don't want to be, but because I'm just more of a stereo, (HiFi, audiophile) person. Virtually any criticism you might have of audiophiles probably applies to me, except for the elitism. I'm a big fan of all audio equipment and their unique characteristics. But OF COURSE I love music! All of that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thanks.
Thanks! I’m a stereo lover for sure. About 10% of my vids are hifi etc.
Some people also buy expensive watches, even it's still just a clock. If it works, that's what is important. MUSIC FIRST!
Imagine how bad a book community would be when someone new to it is happy to have all the Stephen King books. But they are all from the 24th to the 71st printing. And they just end up being $#!+ on because they arent first printings. It dont matter that its some teenager who inherited all the books from a family member. All the community seems to care about is what printing it is. Maybe so they can just dump on them. But that's how I see it. I bet ya if some 5 year old made a video about how they love their suitcase player. Then just imagine adults attacking this poor kid. Which just goes to show how poisonous the VC can be. And as much as I am involved with whatever the local scene is. I don't participate in it, as I just don't care. Would rather talk music then talk gear. If so then it's like...
1. Does your stereo work?
2. Does it sound okay?
I like your attitude! Thx for watching!
Hey man. I'm with you on the cliques; I find the elitist attitudes of a few to be most unfortunate and annoying. Here's my list: mo-fi, obi, minty, grail, promo. Peace.
Your list is better! But I was rushing through it. Thanks!
Good points.
"Cool" is the most overused word I hear on these channels. It seems to be slung out whenever the speaker can't or won't make the effort to describe a record more concretely. The word, though, is absurdly vague & unhelpful (& cliquish) & without specifics or more clues, "cool" can mean anything or nothing. And, P.S., using the word "cool" doesn't prove that the speaker is that (whatever that is).
Three Record Concept Live Exclusive.
Those are five words!
"You probably shouldn't subscribe" 🤣🤣🤣 I love how anti you are, just like me!
Good topic.
"Vinyl Rundown". What does that mean? Are you run down on vinyl? Does that mean you're tired of it? See, I can do it too. An audiophile is someone who enjoys the quality of sound and the ways that they go about getting a sound they like out of the equipment so they can enjoy the music, so yeah, it is all about the music when you break it all down. I don't obsess about cables, unless they're not working. Then I'm cursing up a storm until I get it working again. Probably because I don't have a system that costs $10-100+k. Just have fun. Enjoyed watching this.
I give you the rundown on all things vinyl. But actually I don’t! Maybe I change the name someday. Thanks for watching!
I am an audiophile, I am totally into pressings, I think they matter a lot, I go for OG if possible. Am I lost? I think NO, I just take care, I am serious with my hobby and spend the money and the time. But if you don't, I am fine, that's just me. For me in no hobby I can be half pregnant, I always have to go all in.
My point was people are audiophiles, not albums. I’m not a pressing nut, but appreciate good ones. We have different tastes, which is fine! Thanks for watching!
The term "VC" or "Vinyl Community" is MEANT to be exclusionary. It stands as a warning (like "Sundown Town") to anyone who chooses to listen to music in any other format than vinyl. How many in the "VC" acknowledge that CDs or cassettes, or reel to reel, even exist (outside of Vinyl Richie)? If it is about the music it should be noted that a lot of music is released on CD only, especially by upstart bands that don't have the budget for vinyl pressings and cover art. If you want high quality music reproduction buy a reel to reel master tape recording. I do not own any vinyl, but I listen to some members of the VC to learn about music I have not heard. I really enjoy listening to music because I am an audiophile. I am also quite content NOT being a member of the sacred Vinyl Community.
Some good points - the gatekeepers are doing a great job keeping out the... riffraff? or true music fans, depending on your perspective. Thanks!
Geez I would much rather see music on vinyl being shown than to hear someone talk about how annoyed they are about the jargon heard in people’s videos LoL! All these kind of videos do is rub someone the wrong way Just saying Although I’ve never been a fan of the the term VCLT I wish it was called something else Haha! Now you’ve drug me into your critique of VC lingo! Any keep stoking the VC drama by making vids like this 😂 Peace (there’s another word you can point out) ✨✌️👽✨PS I did sub tho cuz I like your other videos 😎
Thanks - these rant vids get much higher viewership than my discussions of old jazz records... so I gotta mix it up! thanks for watching. Checking out your channel too.
Loved it did u say Mazzy was
Overused? I was cracking up the cables the pressing the audiophile the vclt are we all trying too hard to fit in?
Cal him Norman from now on! Thanks for watching!
PCVC
VC for not being inclusive?! Pfff come on man. This has to be the dumbest reason for not using a word for a community. Can’t we be a community these days?
Wonder why you needed to spell it out? We live in a c. ttyl.
Amazing. Led Zeppelin were amazing, The Beatles were amazing. Some unknown Psych band that had 2 albums were not amazing
I agree- the word “great” can every album you own really be great?
VC and VCLT i cant stand. Heres another that winds me up. OG!! Im like you if it sound thats great. I have a basic audio technica turntable with bluetooth speakers it sounds good enough to me i cant tell the differenc between analogue and bluetooth speakers. i dont need a thousand pound plus system with dacs etc.
E-bay whiners piss me off.......what part of VG play grade do you not grasp???
Anyway, my guess is "Mazzy loves you"
what is a mazzy?
Sorry - doesn't everyone know @mazzysmusic channel? !
@@VinylRundown I guess not....although if it is just another middle aged white guy showing off a bunch of the usual LP's, I get those mixed up al the time. I like Ken Micallef's channel because least he goes into depth with substance. on his presentations..
I’m a audiophobe.
No it's a vulture
Vulture capitalism. That’s where the real $$ is…!
For real
How bout Amazing or A-mazing or I'm Such and Such And I'm Comin' at You with another Video. Or using the Word Funky to describe all Black records. You don't say this Jazz Record sounds So Jazzy or A Willie Nelson Record sounds So Country. There is a lot more that are annoying.
Funky - how about "urban radio..." Good points - thanks!
