Can I ask why you want his front paws on your lap when he’s done the retrieve? Thanks.

It helps to make sure the dog comes all the way in and allows some close contact and praise at the end .. it will also go into a sit facing you later down the line 👍

Hi Chris, thanks for the helpful guidance. I'm looking forward to getting our pup and the training but a little concerned that my kids will undo any good work with introducing bad habits when they go crazy with him. Any advice? I dont want to be a kill joy but want to avoid introducing potential retrieving /obedience problems. Thanks in advance!

I think the main thing is not allowing the children to throw anything for the puppy as developing retrieve is quite a fragile thing a lot of the time if you stick to that you might be relatively okay

Why do some dog trainers say you shouldn't be introducing the lead till at least 6 months old confused

I think it comes from a more traditional training route where dogs would be living in kennels and they wouldn't start training them till six or eight months old but they also wouldn't be doing anything else so not corrupted by everyday life.
But the average Joe on the street it wouldn't be sensible to wait till six months to start lead work with a spaniel as it would be very impractical or feasible
