  • Hike planned: Sugarloaf and Spaulding via the AT off of Caribou Pond Rd.
What happened: Ended up turning back after one mile in, the one time I think I’ll be fine without snowshoes! 😩 Never leaving them behind again.
Never underestimate any amount of snow in the mountains. Always come over prepared. Better safe than sorry.

A day in the woods is always a good day, even when we have to turn around and return another day. Incredible amount of snow there 😮 I live in South East Massachusetts and we've had a dusting so far this winter. Stay safe and enjoy every moment 🤠🌲🍃

Thank you! We got another foot after this but today is calling for a lot of rain sadly.. cooling off again by Tuesday but the trails are gonna be messed up for a bit. Nothing is quite frozen enough yet… Can’t wait to return for the summits! Thanks for watching 🤗

Glad you didn't stay stuck! When getting stuck I drop the gear into D1 or D2 for extra traction, usually does the trick.

Snow shoes can be handy...me and a friend found out... late April hike in the White mountains, a little off the trail and the snow would be waist deep! We had our "gaitors" though. Happy trails.
    5 STARS!

I was parked at the AT parking area last weekend and hiked up to the tent area on Bigelow. I thought there would be more snow and I wore snow shoes and regretted it. I was trying to get to Cranberry Pond but late start and broke a pole out the gate.
    Nice video

Oh wow! The snow conditions were actually hurting my ankles because of how hard the crust was and breaking through. How many inches did you have when you went? You parked off of E Flagstaff Rd? Bummer about the pole :( Was Little Bigelow parking area at the AT plowed?

@@AmandaDouin no, I parked just pasted where you went off 27. The AT parking area for Crocker.
There was hardly 2 inches of snow but I went up a south facing slope with a lot of exposure.
If you ever see a silver Jeep with a Husky sticker on it, that’s me 😃.
I’m usually hiking with a Husky that looks part wolf.

@mainesteam4636 so you parked just up the logging rd near the gate, or is there actually another place to park entirely other than Caribou Pond Rd..? Sorry, I’m not familiar with that area as much since this was only my second time at this location. I parked at the gate and did the Crockers and Redington loop a week or so before this.. The snow was much less then and didn’t even need traction at all. I bare booted the whole thing. Probably why I thought things would be fine this time around.

@@AmandaDouinon rt 27 north of the Sugarloaf access road and south of Stratton is an AT parking lot on your left. On that side of the street is south bound AT up to the Crockers. Across the street is north bound AT straight into the Bigelows. The that trail goes up. At the top you would turn left to the Cranberries or to the right , north bound AT hits the top of Horn pond trail then camping area.

Oof, I wouldn't want to get stuck out on that road. Well at least you got your car out! Yeah, snowshoes would have been the way to go. Sucks to learn that lesson the hard way but I bet you'll always have 'em in the car going forward!

I def will! Those snowshoes are going to have a permanent place in my vehicle lol
