Thanks, great vid! Very useful indeed! As someone starting out with push for the first time and planning to get the non-standalone version, is the workflow shown here with standalone largely the same for using it tethered?
One other small point, when you say you can plug in any controller, i don't know at the moment how the levels can initially match up when you switch their assignment (e.g. switch to control a different device) if that controller doesn't have endless knobs / motorised faders? Or if that actually matters much in practice? (On my MPK mini at the moment with Live I'm still getting a jump in the value when I first turn it; i.e. the knobs aren't working as endless knobs yet, even though they are endless in this case).
(P.S. I know that with the akai devices and ableton we are generally better off with the 'A' series, e.g. APC, rather than "M", e.g. MPK, the former being targetted at ableton and the latter more at the MPC software).
Nice video btw, good to see positive discoveries and even the glitches encountered with such a new piece of hardware! I'd look down the line to use with Ableton software on my desktop, but appreciate the WIP that is standalone - It's not quite there yet but in potential this could be a genuine game changer....
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed it, it was fun to work out some features as we went along, and to get some surprises despite having used Live and Push since 2003. There's a few small tweaks to be made but for a version 1 beta software....it's pretty incredible. Tethering it to Live on the desktop is amazing as you get all the benefits of the audio and MIDI interface but with the flexiblity of working on a computer. Nice tutorial. What about if you want to replace a drum sound with a new sample, what's the workflow for that? Or what about if you want to design your own snare using a built-in drum synthesizer? Would love to see a tutorial for Ableton beginners showing the workflow for these types of things. Coming from the MPC, this was such an integral part of the workflow and you could just sample or resample and assign new things to existing pads on a drum program so easily. Trying to get a sense of whether the Push workflow is similarly straightforward.
Thanks for watching and for the comment - what you're describing is very straight-forward - to the right of the screen there's a + button (which creates a new track / device) and the arrow button (called hotswap) - this lets you swap the currently selected for something else. So if you are on a drum pad and press it, you can swap the sample. Hope that helps!

@@sinewaymusic Ahh right - so if you wanted to hot swap with an Instrument (like a drum synth etc) then that would be simple and the same process. If you wanted to sample from another sound in your project into the pad of a Drum Rack that isn't possible in Ableton Live at all, let alone Push. That would always be a 2-step process of sampling into an audio track, and then moving that sample into the Drum Rack. Hope that helps! Thanks, Simon

Can I ask a wee question. On a drum rack is there not a way to change individual levels out the box. How is that done as I spent a few hours trying to figure it out. Managed easy enough with maschine. Was easy enough to do full kit just not the individual levels. Feel I am being daft
I have been trying how to move the projects from my pc to ableton push 3 standalone, and I have not been able to do it. I always get UPLOADING TO PUSH FAIL, I have only managed to upload a small project to push 3, but, I have not been able to get the instruments that are native to ableton, such as the grand piano, basic things. What am I doing wrong? I looked in the manual and there is no reference to any error when uploading the project. I have tried freezing the projects, I have tried Collected all and save. I have tried dragging from the ableton folder to the push folder. I have tried dragging from the windows folder, to the push folder in ableton. and nothing seems to work. If you can tell me what I am doing wrong it would be a great help. Thanks a lot++ pd: the push its update, there is 15 audio tracks with stems and 2 drum racks and 4 virtual intruments., about 60 escenes, no max for live device and just native ableton instruments

Just to confirm - I spent some time yesterday playing about and all mappings you make on the desktop version also remain in standalone! So you can map up your whole project, ping it over to Push 3, plug your controller directly into Push and you’re good to go!
This was such a great video. So helpful! Not sure if you're still checking comments but had a question on that External Device instrument where you sent the midi notes to the seqeuncer and the audio came back into the same channel. Have you every played around the the Microcosm Hologram? Wondering if you could do something similar w that, but I think you'd have to have an instrument that's playing a sound, the audio would route from push to the hologram, then audio returns back to that channel. I haven't figured out the best way to work w the Hologram and Push 3 in Standalone. Any suggestions welcome! Thx :)
You got it exactly right, from a midi instrument track, you can send audio out from an output on the Push 3 to your effect pedals, then back in through an input on the Push 3. Add "external audio effect" device to that midi track and route the correct ins an outs and you're all set.
So does it have that struff on it. The sexy-to-touch rubberized finish which then gets progressively sticky, until a decade later its a gummy mess. Strange how no one talks about the finish.
quick tip that I use a lot that I didn't see here - if you hit "Duplicate" when, say, in the drum rack view, it'll duplicate the entire scene and seamlessly keep playing in the new scene. this is a really nice/easy way to build up variations on scenes/clips
Ah yes - good tip! Personally I prefer to go into the settings and choose ‘Clip’ workflow over ‘Scene’. This changes the behaviour of the duplicate button to only duplicate the current clip so you can add a variation and stops you having too many identical clips in your project. 😁
@@subsineacademy yeah, makes sense! I see appeal to both approaches, and I think "Shift + Duplicate" does whichever one is not your default, so it's nice to have access to both techniques. I definitely end up with lots of duplicate clips :) but sometimes it also leads me to build little variations that I might not have otherwise

@@mrrafsk could you clarify your setup a bit - you’d like a laptop running Ableton Live and Push 3 to be a word clock slave to another interface that is connected to the ADAT input of Push 3? I can 100% confirm you can use the analog inputs simultaneously with ADAT when in master clock mode as that’s how I’m using it. I’ll see if I can test it syncing clock to my 18i20 via ADAT.
@@subsineacademy thanks. good news! about using the adat/analogue I/O simultaneously, all my other gear switches them off then using it’s usb interface. I have a usb audio interface with x4 adat, and I want to keep that as the master, as other devices are following it.
Great video. Hopefully they make mapping from the hardware available. Think I’ll be going down the route of Push connect first and then updating to standalone. Looks like a lot of people have the same idea as the standalone is available but connect is out of stock for 8 weeks!
Arghh is it out of stock already?! That was fast! Yeah that’s a good shout - it’s amazing that it’s upgradable and will make it a ‘forever box’. The stand-alone is amazing but as a professional I think the controller will get more of a workout.

Anyone know if the push adat can be configured to have it’s world clock set not as master so following another clock?
In the PC audio driver there is an option for this - I haven’t tried it yet but you can certainly set it to master or sync’d clock.
