great video .it was to late for me i didnt notice until i had taken it off .
i watched this it was a great help .i could not hire this tool so . first put on the rear seal . using 7 mm long bolts to guide me on and the inner sleeve that came with the new seal. i didnt bolt it up at this stage .i then checked my crankshaft was locked with the correct tool . then i put a line strait through the middle of the 6.oclock crankshaft bolt . and the 12 oclock bolt hole .i then used the locating tag that came with the new seal. and used that to line up my hole in the timing ring and outer housing . tapped it flush all the way round with the crankshaft . then used a small hammer and a dial gauge to get my 0.5mm from ring to the end of the crank. put it all back and it runs fine .thanks for you help

I replaced my transmission, clutch and rear main seal last weekend. Didn't know when the ring was for so I left it out 😂. It starts pretty rough but runs and drives fine. Looks like I'll be taking the transmission out again this weekend

This here video is for them diesels. My new rear main seal doesn't have that part for the crank sensor. So I can just plop it onto my 1.8t petrol engine without worry of it being at TDC or not. That's quite reassuring. Also I think smearing on some RTV in them corners would be our best bet. Doing this on my audi this weekend.

Just replaced the RMS on my Volkswagen Golf R. Also didn’t have the crank sensor, so I’m in the same boat as you. Hoping I didn’t need to align top dead center or any of the steps taken in the video. I just plopped my RMS in with a little bit of gasket sealant

I can confirm you need special tool for installation. I just eyed it up. Engine hard to start and revved poorly. Found a specialty hire shop. Now to do it again properly 🙄

Sorry but for me that hole on speed sensor ring need to be at 12 oclock does not matter if cams are 180 or 360 cose your crank shaft hole marke will be at 12 oclock anyway, one turn for crank then cams on 180 second full turn for crank and cams 360 then your mark still will be at 12 oclock only thing is the ring need to be lined up with mark on case but when u buy new one comes with plastick line up guide. Please correct me if i am wrong

I am not going to say VW makes bad cars/engines but they just make them so complicated compared to old engines,it simpley scares me how VW designed this.
On my car i need a screw + screwdriver and plier to get the seal ring out and plastic hammer to get the new sealring in....For me as a mechanic these cars would never be a first choise i like things simple and solid, and not complicated like this.

An Excellent video. but can you please explain why do you need to tighten more? what if the space wasn't 0.5 mm (what will the engine be like after starting it)? i had the dealer change it for me, but i feel vibration in the engine and loss of power after repairing that seal. Rpm also decreases a little after switching ac on , and then regains its idle again.Any suggestions about the cause? it's a CAXA 1.4tsi engine 2010

Mohamed Reda Zaima the crankshaft tone ring is probably slightly misaligned. Needs to be redone most probably. Scanning the car for corelation errors would be the first step. Then the shop must look for actual waveforms of crank to cam and compare to known goods. But since this happened right after a rear main replacement, it probably is that.

    Hello. Amazing video. Will subscribe.
May I ask a question about the crank sensor?
My son's car via code is saying crankshaft sensor fault. So I replaced. It still cutting out.
When I replaced it was full of oil. So was looking fir videos on rear crank seals to see if oil shoukd even be on the sensor.
Then I noticed thst ring with teeth? If one of the teeth are broken will this cause faults?
Will the set up in this video be the same for an audi a3 2020 1.6? If so I might replace the rear seal n that ring with the teeth?

I want to ask because the hole where the sensor is mounted is big so it is possible this ring with teeth can be displaced out of position in case water comes in this place? What I was trying to say that on my two cars (not volkswagens) I can replace the crankshaft seal with a screwdriver, a hammer and possibly a bit of wood. On one car I need 8mm socket - that is it. I do't understand why vw makes it so overly complicated. I wouldn't obviously attempt to do the job like the one on the video with a hammer as the engine would be probably fucked. I have to make my posts clearer sometimes I guess.
