the RP makes the 6D look like an old man but fails to dominate because of the 6D’s wisdom

I have the 5D MK IV and I wanted to replace my 7D MK II. So I decided to buy the RP. Sure, it is a slow camera, which is a bit disappointing. But be careful. It is still a canon full frame camera, with really good image quality. i do not regret it at all. I have tested all my EF lenses on it, and i can only say that this camera is underrated.

I just got an RP with 50mm F1.2. (I already have a 6Dii and a M50.) I'm delighted with the RP. For me the advantages over the 6D are the light weight, the EVF, the headphone jack, and the RF mount. I shoot video at 25p so the lack of 24p is not a big issue. When Canon brings out a 5D equivalent EOS R I'll get that and use the RP for a second camera. The 4K is good for interviews where you can punch in for closeups without using 2 cameras. BTW, that extension thingy would be good for mounting on a tripod with the 50mm F1.2. A battery grip would be a good option.
Everyone has different likes and needs, but if you can't take good photos and videos with an RP, YOU have the problem, not the camera. But if you want a different or better camera, that's fine.
Also a big thank you to all the haters out there, I got my RP with 50mm F1.2, 35mm F1.8, adaptor, spare battery and filters for the equivalent of US$3,400.00 + tax.

amateur here, bought the rp with the 35mm lens as an update to my 5dii, i really like it, alone the autofocus upgrade is worth it to me, had to center focus recompose all the time and missed many shots on my kid and dog. low light is great too and the lightweight really has me bringing the cam along again after not bringing the 5d with me lately. Don't care what the haters say, i won't film much with it. didn't film with the 5d either. got a bunch of lenses that work fine with it and i'm very happy with it

I've not held/used an RP...but I tried using the Sony a7ii and a7iii and couldn't figure them out. I'm sure that I'll get should I spend more time with them ...but I picked up the EOS R and it was very intuitive (despite the mode dial)...in 5 min I was navigating it's functionality.
As for the haters...when the 6Dmkii came out everyone said it sucked...I used it last year for a week, and was blown away by the quality of the images. I presume that the RP is victim of theirs as well.

    • @gatsch69
      @gatsch69 5 років тому +1

@Silviu Vulcan no regrets so far, i really like the cam, plus the 35mm is awesome too. Been thinking of getting a 35mm for a while and couldn't be happier with it. The cam so far is great, sure battery life is a lot shorter than the 5dii but i bought the cam with a second battery and haven't had a day where i needed 2 batteries, one thing i also kinda notice is that the metering is sometimes a little inconsistent, but that might be something on my end. I have been looking into sonys as well but to be honest i was too lazy to do a whole system change, i have about 5 canon lenses which i really like and wanted to keep, they all work great with the adapter, also i'm probably too nostalgic to ever sell the 5dii so it will probably sit in my house waiting for a while cuz i didn't feel like using it after the purchase. I'd say go ahead and buy it, it's a great cam, fullframe is great too and you can keep both bodies in case you ever needed something for sports.as for the lenses, that's actually something where i would safe up to get a nice one, i have a 24-70 2.8, the first gen and it's great, buy good glass bodies come and go, cheers

Same here was using 60D but i tried a friend's 5DMkii kinda wish mine is a full frame on a 35mm it's so wide compared to a crop frame camera.
my only worry is EF adapter during auto focusing will it focus properly are you using one for EOS RP?
i heard bad reviews about 6d mkii mainly it's video which i don't really care since i don't shoot videos with it.
only thing that worries me now is the continuous shot. how slow is slow. need to put both camera photo and shoot side by side to tell the differences.
idk if can survive with 60d probably can survive with EOS RP.
another thing is the mount to third party lenses will it work?

Thanks for the review. However I would point out that the ergonomics are much different between the two cameras. I own a 6D and have played around with the RP at the local Best Buy. The 6D is far superior in my opinion, the button and dials placement is almost perfect, the feel of the camera in my hands, it is probably Canon's best effort there. The RP feels awkward and cramped. Change for the sake of change. Too bad.

The RP may also be an option for a user of an older FF EF camera (I have been using the original 5D and 6D), that does not care about sports or video (only stills), already has good EF glass to use, and wants to move to a lighter mirrorless camera, suitable for travel photography.

I think too often we tend to ignore the more important part is, if the camera is an upgrade to our current model we own. I own right now a Canon t7i, and to me, the Canon 6d Mark II is a huge upgrade to my gear and to my abilities to create better photos. I find too often that review videos lean away from that message. I lean to the 6d simply for the fact I prefer not to need to buy an adapter for the glass I already own. I truly think overall these cameras are very similar if you were to remove that one is mirrorless.

Dear Jarred, on all Canon DSLR cameras I had, they all had a pop-up flash. I bought a Canon R7 in May 2023. Unfortunately, it did not have a pop-up flash. I was in a somewhat dark situation and would have liked to have the pop-up flash for fill-in flash. Now I don't read anywhere in the reviews why the Canon R cameras no longer have a pop-up flash. I miss this one for a fill-in flash on the spot. You don't always have your external flash with you.
Is there a reason why Canon no longer makes these pop-up flashes on the R cameras.
Why is so little explanation given about this?

I had the 6Dmii for about 2 months and finally switched to the RP. Basically as a weight consideration. The 6D with the kit zoom lens was so heavy that it made me not want to use it. The RP is so light and powerful that I keep it with me and use it all the time. Unfortunately, the flip side is that the battery life on the RP is appalling. The 6D I could shoot for days without thinking of battery life. The RP, I have to decide which hours I want to use it before rushing back to an outlet to charge it. I don't spend my life reviewing cameras and only buy a new one when necessary. My main concern in going mirrorless was the old feeling that DSLR's have less delay between shutter press and image but no one seems to test or comment on this. Is it now a needless concern? I bought an RP to augment my 'antique' 5D mkII. The improved autofocus is a major point. The grip feels so secure I don't feel the need for a strap unless carrying more than one body around my neck. The simulation of exposure in the viewfinder adds a level of reassurance. The optional level is great for those who too often make tipsy photos. I doubt I will be buying the new lenses (they may be better than the old EF I have but mine work well enough for my standards.
I wish there were a requirement for UA-cam posters to update or at least flag their videos so the venue is not filled with bad information.. Now that the 24P complaint was addressed in firmware, half the RP reviews that harp on one feature are invalid. I don't understand why I should care. If I wanted a video camera I'd buy a video camera. If Canon hears us on the battery life issue and makes a rechargeable grip with odd shaped battery or a better way to charge on the fly, all will be right with my world maybe for the next ten years while they turn my RP into an antique.
I hear the R mkII will offer IBS and dual cards (one CF). 'Antique' status may not take ten years.

In the reference system I even had mono blocks (2 separate amps) and a phono step up. The reason is that with an integrated amp a small box is being called up to do the work of separate equipment. No integrated amp will ever perform remotely close the separates.

When the rp was first announced it was really tempting to switch with the adapter and everything included but the more research I did the better my current camera looked. The major drawbacks for me were no top mount lcd, not a lot of external buttons for adjustments on the fly, the lower FPS, and the much smaller battery was what really killed it for me. I don't really mind the continuous shooting speed but care more about the WIFI functionality, UHS-II support, 143 AF points, touch and drag feature which looked so useful in real life scenarios, official support for EF lenses using a mount, DIGIC-8 for an updated image processing, much lighter, less bulky and yes, I would probably buy another spare battery considering the small size (1040mAh or about 250 shots).

Preceptor Da i don‘t know honestly. It‘s hard for me to give advice. I got a D750 after a D5300 since that‘s all I need. I know that you will get great results with an 80D, but the RP is not bad, considering the price and the most important thing: the mount options. Yout get this cheap ff body, now you get glass for it. If you upgrade your camera in the future you already have glass for it. Ok, you could also buy the ff lenses for your 80D, but in my opinion get the fullframe mirrorless for that price. Makes more sense than a DSLR now.

Thanks, that was a great breakdown. It is a tough call between these two for me. I don't shoot action and shoot mostly handheld with heavy lenses so dropping a pound would be nice. The odd thing is I have come to prefer the optical viewfinder over the Screens for the most part. Somehow I just feel more connected to my subject. I loved the digital viewfinders at first but going back and forth I keep reaching for my old Canons over Olympus/Fuji bodies.

Hey this is me from the future to past me - this video made me buy the 6D for 1200$ on a sale and even with it having a front focussing that got solved by re-adjusting the AF Sensor via warranty im really happy with it - i dont have to do an adapter fiddle for EVERY lense i own and the fact that i only own EF lenses makes the 6D the right choice eventhough its a bit on the "large" side - Although i can still use my old 77D OR buy.. say a fuji xt30 for "travel" if its too much to carry. - Oh and past me, there is going to be a R5 and R6 soon end of this year so look out for thems!
Oh and the RP uses the same battery as the 77D and there is a reason why i have 4 and was constantly recharging them especially in cold weather while the 6D ones.. yea i have 3 but on a shoot i rarely use more than one, and thats starting at like 70% charge... those 5D/6D / R batteries are real heavy duty things - for once totally worth the absurd canon OG battery price :D

Great comparison. Both are excellent cameras and I like the emphasis you put on glass and photography fundamentals over bodies. Both cameras have strengths and weaknesses. I use the 6d ii alongside the 5d iv (events, kids, crowds, people). The flip out screen is something the 5d just doesn't have, so the 6d ii is a great partner for this. I also love that both the 6d ii and 5d iv use the same battery. I often pair the 6d ii with the 16-35 iii and use it with dual pixel AF while the 5d holds the a longer lens (e.g. 70-200 2.8, 85 1.4 is, or even the 50 1.2 depending on the situation). I seldom shoot any video at all. I might upgrade the 6d ii to the R (or some next version of it), but not the RP. The RP gets minus two (-2) checks, in my situations, for being slow on paper. I should probably try it out, but I think this video confirms the slowness. Also, it's worth noting that while the autofocus points on the 6d ii are clumped when using the SLR system, you can use the dual pixel AF system on the 6d ii and get better (and slower) af coverage (albeit on a flip out screen). Along with that new 50, i imagine once those new 85s come out, it's going to be hard not having an RF mount. One more thing, I imagine that I *might* enjoy quieter shooting in some situations from the mirrorless. Is it noticeably quieter? Thanks again.

I’m starting to outgrow the 500d and am tired of the drawbacks of crop sensors, and I’ve set my sights on a 6d mark II. For me, the body size; the button layout, and optical viewfinder win just hands down over mirrorless. The weight is problematic, but the *only* downside considering that second hand prices of 6d bodies with the 4L lens is 3.5x cheaper than an R body with the equivalent RF 4L lens.

I see most landscape photographers use their LCD screens (ie Canon Live View) to compose their image, does that not give you a WYSISYG image? With Canon and Nikon release of their EOS R and Z6 & Z7 so much has been made of EVF's but is there any difference from what you see on your camera's LCD? 2. I remain amused by the comparison between not only these two cameras, but between mirrorless and DSLR in general. Mirrorless is typically thought of as advantageous thanks to smaller, lighter bodies. Two ways they achieve that are shorter focal length and lack of a mirror and pentaprism. So then we have R series glass - some of the biggest and heaviest, not to mention most expensive lenses on the market today. But wait - you can put on an adapter to use your EF mount glass. Well, that just compensates for the focal length difference... hey wait a minute... yep, there goes your advantages. Oh, and if you like your body and lenses to have balance on the tripod and in the hand, well sorry but the EOS R will not have the same balance characteristics as an equivalent DSLR. So then maybe its just about features? Does the EOS R offer enough features to drive people to switch to this system? I don't personally think so, but maybe some folks do. Lastly, the apparent price advantage. Well, that evaporates as soon as you load on that nice 24 - 105 R lens it typically comes with and frankly if you're not investing in RF glass, why bother making the switch? As far as i can tell the few extra "check marks" that went to the EOS R do not really tell the story. For value you would be hard pressed to do better than the 6D MKII. It's a brilliant camera with some limitations, but with the exception of the focus points the EOS R does not overcome those limitations well enough to matter.

Thank you for the comparison Jared -for someone who has 4 Lp -e6 batteries for the canon 60d , I think the canon 6d mark ii is the way to go and besides for travel photography I believe having a built in gps is important because though the eos rp can geotag the pics through an app from your smartphone , shits happens u can forget to open the app on your mobile phone for your camera to geo tag the pics .Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe that the gps feature will only work if you open the app on your smart phone it’s not automatic like u would get into your car and your music player will automatically start to play the music from your smartphone . I think the top screen and the iso button is important to have, good for night photography. Besides I don’t think the eos rp is a camera that can last more than 5 years in places which have very high humidity -too much electronic. For someone who has a canon aps-c dslr which is in perfect condition, the 6d mark ii is the way to go because u will be able to use the same FF lens on both cameras , while the RF lens won’t mount on my canon 60 d. For me if there was an update for the app re the gps , I could choose the eos rp - I know that the RF 24-105 f/4 is sharper than the canon 24-105 f/4 is (now is it really much sharper ) I don’t know 🤔

Thanks for the info. I'll probably sell my original 6D and buy the EOS R while keeping the 6DII as a backup. Been debating picking up the EOS R instead of a 70-200 2.8 III.

    Hi,
Thank you for the wonderful video ❤️
I'm looking to buy my first camera my budget ranges from 1- 1.5 lakh,
Iam not a professional photographer, just a hobby Photographer
I'm a person more on to photography mostly potraits, Pre wedding & sometimes wildlife,
Video I do might shoot for particular occasion.
After checking on video I found,
    Canon 80d /90d,
Canon EOS RP/ canon 6d mark ii
    /sony a 7 iii
    Sony a6400
considering that i want to buy a 50mm prime lens f 1.8 makes me go blank with respect to mirrorless as the price of lens is way to expensive
Iam confused on which to buy as my 1st camera to get my skills up, where should i be investing money.

An adapter will allow u to use dslr lenses. Sony will looy you when you need lens. Buy eos rp or 6d mark ii. Whichever is cheaper in india.

Get the Eos m50 or m6ii your arms will thank you in the future. Also UA-cam algorithms put a higher preference to 4K videos so if you start 4K you may see more views. Look at Potato Jet vids

Anyone have low light experience and thoughts about both of these cameras? I'm certainly leaning towards the RP. I need low light intel though - indoor mostly.

I love it when Jared called out the 50 raw files part. Such bs fps from the RP

Why didn’t they just make the battery wider ... no one would begrudge the extra width for 50% better battery life I don’t get it ....

Still 6D mkII for me. I'm a landscape photographer. My subjects don't move.

Had the 6Dmkii had a better AF point speed I'd say it's the winner hands down....but I'm tired of recomposing....I do mainly ladscapes...but I have kids that don't like to stay still...

Is 6D markii much better than 80D? I mean, for studio photos and low light photography

Audio jack is fundamental. RP gets the check mark there.

As for which one I'd go for..
The 6D Mk ii seems to be more solid and usable.. but I would really instead choose the EOS R which has most everything I want and need with fewest drawbacks.
Plus it can take All of Cannon's line up including EF-S for not all that much more money..
