Autism Dad's Dreams Come True

  • This autism dad's dreams come true...more than once. I guess I should call them goals instead because dreams with a plan aren't just dreams they are goals. Independence is something we work towards everyday with Abigail. The goal of every parent with a severely autistic child should be as much independence as possible in the short time we have on this earth to make our child's life as good as we can even after we are gone. Sometimes we feel like we are racing a very fast moving clock and losing. Today I feel like we caught up a little bit. Oh yeah, we are also going to be guest lecturers for a Master's course at a Florida college to give the parent's perspective to future therapists and psychologists so that's pretty awesome too.

I started crying the moment I heard you say "I'm walking with my daughter" because my daughter was the same way and I know the feeling of happiness when she started walking more independently. It's an amazing feeling! I'm so happy for you. What a great video. Sadly, our experience with ABA was horrific/oppressive/abusive and because of that we use a different therapy philosophy. Not all of your viewers who watch and doesnt believe in ABA judges you. I hope you know that. I have great respect for your family and I believe everyone needs to choose their own therapy path with zero judgment. I watch every day! Sending love to your family. Oh! And I love my fathering autism hat. I have been wearing it every day.

I love this video! Yesterday I was able to take my son to the store and he WALKED with me. No Caroline cart, no eloping, no staring parents looking at us like I had an alien with me, just me and my little dude. 2 years ago that would not have been possible. This channel was my go to after getting his diagnosis, you've helped me better understand the autism parent lifestyle. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We had this moment this summer. :) On Thursday the boy walked 7+ miles, no hand holding, no chasing, no complaining, just walked a massive prairie trail that bordered woods and a river. I cried quite a bit myself. A year ago we had to carry him, we couldn't go to a store that didn't have carts waiting for us outside, we never went anywhere with one adult vs one kid. It was never enough. ABA is awesome, I love it when we get to see massive progress in such a short time! Awesome job Abbie!

I’m loving all yalls art work and pictures up on the wall.
We’re still working on manners. Lol 😂 my son always did and still does this to me if he forgets. I took him to the doctor one day. And the waiting room was full or people. I had my baby, diaper bag and purse in my arms. I was struggling to open the door and a man jumped up and helped. My son said I’m sorry mom I feel bad. From now on I will open the door for u. I’m so embarrassed I should’ve gotten the door for u. That was the very first time he ever even realized oh maybe mom needs my help all by himself. I was so proud he even realized. Cause I’ve always had to tell him.
I thought that was so sweet.

I'm having an Abbie marathon! Woohoo! Every year in college I attended every single autism awareness meeting and helped spread the word on Autism! My sweet baby cousin also has autism and working with her and seeing her achieve goals is the most rewarding thing in life to me, also I love teaching the rest of my family on why she does what she does and what makes her such a special, beautiful girl! Raising awareness opens peoples' eyes and allows any child to feel as though they are not different, but one and the same. God bless your family for being such amazing people.

Hi! I was just about to send Priscilla a Facebook message, but I might as well share here :)
I'm a senior elementary education (and English) major at the University of Rhode Island. Even though I am not getting my special ed certification (yet), we are all required to take a class on special education, which is wonderful! In the class, we've discussed a lot about ASD and how we can support our students on the spectrum in our own classrooms, so naturally, I had to bring you guys up. My class spent an entire 3-hour session watching your videos and I was thrilled! We are all learning so much about how we can be better educators from you guys and I know I speak for my entire cohort when I say how meaningful this first-hand look into the family life of a student with ASD is for us, being so close to entering our own classrooms with students of all abilities. It has given me an entirely new perspective as both an educator and a human in general, and I am so grateful I was able to share that with my peers! I hope you guys know you are changing the lives of so many through these videos, including general educators of America's youth right here in Lil Rhody!
...and I hope you gained some new subscribers from it too 😉

You family are the bomb! What a bundle of unconditional love you guys are. I am from Costa Rica, almost 28 years old and I may have some form of autism. I have lots of troubles when speaking to people, I also have issues with crowded places very often and also cannot tolerate certain sounds or overload of it . As I started watching your journey with Abs, it brought me to tears knowing that I identified many things that Abs does, that I do and feel too and I don't understand why. I sometimes feel helpless and hopeless because I don't know how to approach people around me to be conscious and understand that some things may be really difficult or may take more time for me. I sometimes feel like trapped inside my body... Thank you for shining that beautiful light for us and the world.

I don’t know how I haven’t come across this particular vlog sooner! Wow....just amazing. Totally was crying with you. It’s amazing how much therapy has helped and taught her. It was so awesome to watch. I’m up to date with your currents vlogs so I know how much she’s progressed (overall) since this was posted, but this was so beautiful. Very happy for Abbie.💓

Asa and Pricilla, you have more than a good enough reason to be proud of Abbie and how well she’s doing. The fact that you both have raised her wonderfully and encouraged her to be independent says it all. Don’t feel bad for getting emotional: it’s natural to be like this when you’re proud. You’re both a great example of special needs parenting done right

ABA can be abusive, and it often only has the best interests of the parents, not the children, in mind. That said, you guys are not abusive. I use you as an example of what ABA should look like. Thank you for using ABA for good. I just wish others were like you.

noahconstrictor100 I couldn’t agree more! I was working as an ABA Therapist for about 4 weeks before I found this channel and although I had a few hesitations, watching this family apply what they’ve learned together through aba was a huge step in solidifying how much I believe in this field.

      ABA?

    • @icecrystal34
      @icecrystal34 5 років тому +2

Exactly. ABA most definitely can be abusive and you can look up some videos on youtube for proof. However, done with the interests and understanding of the child in mind, it can also be really really helpful and improve the child and family's quality of life. It's important not to polarize this discussion into "ABA is always abusive" vs "ABA is never abusive"

I used to think negatively of ABA, I think because of media influence. And seeing others who didn't use ABA in the right way. But watching your blog, my mind has changed. She's come so far!!!!

Don't let it upset you if Abbs seems down when she leaves school. That is a good thing. It goes to show how much she loves her school. You guy's have her in a wonderful learning environment and, her seeming a bit down when she first leaves to come home shows that. ❤🙌

People need to understand that not every child is the same. What might work for your child, doesn't mean it works for someone elses. You take the experience and go to find something that does work. Stay positive she will get there whereever there is is for her.

This video made me cry. Abbie is doing amazing! A few days ago I took a walk with my daughter for the first time. She is 7 and has autism and other disabilities. She uses a wheelchair and has been learning how to walk. Wednesday we took a walk down the street with me holding her hand. Just a few months ago she didn't have the strength to take steps unassisted. It felt so amazing to take my sweet girl for a walk. We were told she would never walk! I'm so sorry proud of her. And I'm so proud of Abbie. Y'all are so amazing!
