  • Autism isn't a good or a bad thing in our life... it just is. It makes up a large part of who Abbie is so it's a major influence on our lives. Autism is just part of our lives. Every aspect of our life is affected one way or another by the needs of our autistic child just like it is by our neurotypical child.

The Abbie Effect: Abbie effected the lives of many people today, including an unborn child. I will give you the abridged version: today, I went to my OB/GYN office for some routine blood work. The waiting room is usually filled with pregnant women, couples and babies. As soon as I walked in I noticed that there was a man in a waiting room chair stimming. He was rocking (hard), flapping and making loud vocal stims. I went to the reception window and signed in, when I turned around the man had gotten up and was kicking a very surprised man who was sitting in the waiting room with his pregnant partner. I could tell no one in the waiting room knew what to do, they were shocked. I walked toward the man and simply said, "please don't do that", he looked at me and then sat back down. You would think that was the end of the story but it isn't. As he continued to stim (very loudly), people continued to stare at him warily and I decided to focus on something else because I understood what was going on and it's rude to stare. Over in the corner of the room was what appeared to be a very young pregnant girl (16 years old is my guess) who was in distress. I watched her quietly for about half an hour and realized that she was in labor and was trying to be brave. She didn't realize what was going on. I didn't want to embarrass her, so I went up and knocked on the window of the reception area. When the receptionist opened the window, I leaned in and whispered, "I am no expert but I think that girl in the corner is in active labor.' The doctor and nurses came out and whisked her away. When I finally was called back for my blood work, one of the nurses found me and thanked me. She said that the young girl was in labor and in trouble. I thought to myself, "Thank you, Abbie!" I noticed that young woman in distress because I was able to understand what others in the waiting room couldn't because Abbie taught me!

Your vlogs started popping on my Facebook wall about two weeks ago and I watched them religiously and kept waiting for the new one to pop everyday, until it clicked in my poor tired brain that you guys are on UA-cam and now here I am! ☺️ I think your family is incredible at showing all sides of autism, good, bad, ugly. Abbie is such a typical teenager, like autism or not, she's just a teen who wants to do her thing and it's so fun to watch her just be herself!

I love your whole family! You guys are so amazing to still have interests and hobbies outside of your beautiful Abbie’s extremely high needs autism. I know from personal experience that having neuro-atypical kids can be all-consuming. (I have three neuro-atypical kids: my oldest has cerebral palsy, my daughter has dyslexia and bipolar disorder and my youngest has very mild, extremely high functioning autism). You guys all rock! I have to admit to being #teamAsa. Your drive to get Abbie the best care you can find and your open, loving kindness towards your viewers is what drew me in and keeps me watching.

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you. I’m a support worker for kids with special needs but I primarily work with kids that have non-verbal autism. For me it’s so rewarding to see these kids excel in life. Just because they don’t verbally talk, doesn’t mean they can’t communicate. Their actions speak very loudly. I love working with these special kids and they are teaching me new things everyday. I’m learning Australian sign language and they also use songs to communicate what they want to me, which goes to show just how smart they are.
I also want to thank you for sharing bits of your life and explaining why Abbey does some things and that it’s ok, because I find most people would just stare (people are becoming much more accepting). Isaiah, keep being the best big brother ever. Priscilla and Asa, keep on working as the best team unit, it’s really inspiring.
    Lauren

I love showing your chanel to my 36 year old son with autism he loves watching the things you all get to do . I don’t have all the support you have , so amazing ,how did you find someone willing to work with Abby and how costly is it , I need to find help so that’s why I’m asking . My son has challenging behaviors . I have a hard time with people who judge I don’t think anyone really understands , when my son verbalize even if he yells or swears people don’t understand how proud of him I get ,people judge and say how inappropriate . I’m happy he verbalized other than having a aggressive meltdown . It’s hard Abby is doing so great I’m so happy for your family . There are no programs capable of working with my son where I live so he is with me all the time .

I started watching your channel back when you had less than 7000 subscribers. I was interested in watching your channel because it was about Autism. I was wrong. It was not only about your relationship with Abby and what you deal with in caring for an Autistic child, but your family members. It shows how your family has been close, and all work to make Abby’s special needs be a part of your family, but not over run your family, but letting her be an accepted family member. You have a very special family and you all should be proud of your accomplishments. You are giving her every opportunity to grow into a woman and learn about what she can achieve on her own. Thank you for sharing all of your family with the rest of us.

So usually I smile and laugh through so many of you guys' wonderful videos because you all have terrific senses of humor and are good at capturing the lighthearted moments that we can all relate to, but one of those sweet moments got me teary-eyed today. I can remember my mom or dad sending our puppy in to wake me up in the mornings before school all through my teen years. Let's face it, getting up in the morning sucks when you're a teenager. LOL But it made me so happy, and emotional, to get that Abby gets to share in that fun and oh so typical experience. You are all awesome. I love the care you take to make sure Abby continues to learn and retains what she's learning but also make the tougher or longer days a little better for her. Oh my goodness, I hate anything that squirts something up my nose and through my sinuses to come out the other side. *gag* But I still force myself to do it when I'm sick because I can't stand feeling like I'm drowning in my own snot! LOL

I get why the commenter of the day said what she said. I think she sees that your family is so wrapped up into it that you guys forget to try to live a normal life. The blog is about autism but it also shows an equal balance of what family life is like for parents raising an autistic child. I love the level of involvement you and Priscilla put into both your children. There are parents who do not embrace parenthood like the two of you. And I watch for all those reasons. Yoh have brought me so much awareness about autism that I didnt know about before. I was honestly quite afraid on how to react to someone like Abby until getting a birds eye view from your blog. I have fallen in love with your whole family and I feel privileged to watch your videos. Your family rocks!

I hope you guys see this as it’s getting much harder to get to you as you grow your channel so big! 🥳 I’ve been a faithful viewer right from the beginning and so my kids have either seen, or heard many many videos along the way. They’re twins and will be 4 on the 28th. Anyway, I was so blown away today as I was making lunch in the kitchen and my daughter was sitting at the kitchen table playing with her dolls. Instead of her usual chattering, she was humming, and making other types of noises for the longest time as she played happily. Finally I noticed and asked what she was doing and she replied so sweetly “I pretendin’ to play with abbey”. I was almost moved to tears as I’ve never told them why abbey makes her sounds, or anything about the way she is, but she just took it upon herself to adapt the way she played for abbeys sake. She didn’t judge, or question it, she just changed the way she played. I’m so proud of that, and so proud that you’ve given me the opportunity to teach acceptance in my children without even really trying to.
Your family has benefited mine in more ways than you’d ever know. You all have such a special place in my heart 💝

It'd be cool To find out..science is close. I watched a neurolinked demo of a person hooked up to this device with a screen. The person was sitting watching a video on a different screen. In real time the A.I. device showed what the person was seeing with 98% accuracy. Some things we're a bit vague, but everything else was dead on and looked exactly like what the person was watching. I almost couldn't tell the difference until the not so clear water parts came up and sort of blended together. It made me think of Abbie and how amazing it would be to see what she sees and understand how she processes thought. I wonder if they would ever try something like that or think it's an invasion..idk. It'd be amazing and a great tool to be able to teach people with autism as they'd understand more how their brain works and adjust lessons accordingly.

Hello there, I just want to share something, my sister has CP, and when growing up I was the abnormal one when it came to the shiner's hospital play area, because I could run, walk, talk what we call normal, but there were things I couldn't do and kids that had disabilities had to show me how they worked I was at the time 5/7 those years was so important that I can still remember then as if they took place yesterday and I'm now 50 almost 51, so it is part of our lives just like autism is part of your lives, Abbi is a big part and so is your son, and dad, and mom, grandma. It was soo much on her. Now that school is virtual n she gets to do ABA earlier n once a week she's handling it better.

I’m right there with you and Priscilla on the craft issue. I’m ambidextrous, so it’s just assumed that I’m naturally artistic. I’m always asked to help with projects and decorating...until they realize what a klutz I am.
Loved Abbie’s wake up with the pup! ❤️

So cute watching Abbie with Maverick. Absolutely love your response to the comment. For me I have to say I have learned some things from your videos. I see Abbie being an average teenager sometimes. Like being defiant on going to bed.

has Abby ever spoken any words? also, On TLC channel there is a show about a woman called "momma medium" this woman is able to communicate for people who are non verbal whether due to autism, stroke, brain injury etc. I just wondered if you have ever heard of her. If not, watch an episode and lemme know what ya think. How awesome would it be to have someone that can tell you what Abby is really thinking, or maybe there is something she wants to communicate to you but is unable, like how awesome would it be for her to tell you she loves you, Im gonna cry...I would love that for all of you, and Im sure if she could say it she would. You are some of the greatest parents I've ever seen!!!

I think that autism is an integral part of your life. It obviously affects much of what you do as a family but it doesn't have to define each one of you or prevent each one from doing their own things. I think you all do a very good job of keeping a good balance between tending to Abbie's needs and enjoying a full spectrum of activities. You are so right, we only see about 15 minutes of your day, so it is unfair to judge every aspect of your lives by what we see in a video.

Love you Abbie! I’ve seen that teenager raise of the brow when you tell them it’s time to go to bed... My grand daughter use to live with me only to finish out her school year. Because her dads job moved them to a new area. Let me tell ya when I seen the way Abbie looked at her dad when he told her it was bed time, they brow went up. Yes that’s a teenager thing lol.. However I think she responds well to you and her teachers.. I think she’s very smart girl, like all kids they try to push you to your limits just too see if they can... Just love your family and cilia is looking Awesome!

I love watching hour family. I have learned a lot and you have taught me ways I hadn't thought of to help others with autism. May I ask if you have thought about or have planned for Abby when she is older? When you are older and can no longer care for her? I worry about that with my kids, I can't imagine having to worry about that with a precious child that will always need care. I mean no harm in asking this. It's not meant to be offensive in any way.

Hi. I’m new to watching your channel and I just wondered does Abbie eat fruit? I don’t want to seem patronizing but if she does and the amount of times she asks for food/snack wouldn’t this seem a better option and then she could perhaps visit the fridge as often as she wants (obviously within reason). I must also add what truly wonderful parents you are to both your children.

Guys seriously don't feel the need to defend your fight in promoting autism awareness, I know our children aren't JUST autism but autism consumes a LARGE part of our lives. We face the truth every day through love, patience and struggles with autism so we have the right to advocate and express that yes it is apart of our lives, there is more to us than just autism but it is the truth.. Autism is life changing and you do conform to adapting to the aspie life! Your doing a great job, I am feeling inspired to start my own youtube channel documenting my life with autism as a single mum in Australia. Thanks guys, Abbie makes our day and my autistic daughter's aswell. Hello from the land down under!! Much love and support.

Asa, Another thing that can help you with nasal congestion so you have a chance of getting some sleep is to take a hair dryer on low heat and breathe in the warm air. It will unclog your nose at least for a while. Hopefully, it gives you enough time to get to sleep. My Mom taught me this a long time ago and now I use it when my son is congested to help him get to sleep.
