Do you collect DVDs in 2022? Where do you get your pickups from?

    • @RPKGameVids

I've pretty much stopped buying DVD's now as I've got so many that I've not watched yet, and if I keep on buying them the backlog will just get bigger and bigger. So I'd rather watch everything that I've got first and then buy some more.
I had been buying them only on ebay for a long time, but maybe one day I'll pop back into CEX and see what wrestling stuff they've ogt.

Thats a smart idea. I don't buy a lot myself, unless I see something that is a must-buy. Its good to go through the collection and to watch what you have. I bet you can get some decent pickups on WWE PPVs and docs.

Fantastic video, man! I have a friend for whom physical movies are a 4K Ultra HD or nothing proposition, and I get the point of video snobs like him, but I am like you. I have a level of "good enough," at which I am satisfied. Dvds are perfectly fine for me. Lesser resolution doesn't diminish my ability to enjoy the content contained on them. My local pawn shop has literally thousands of dvds at a price point of 75 cents. I can walk in with 20 dollars and walk out with a pile of great films that I can always own and enjoy without the worries the streaming only folks have to endure.😮

Why on earth do I need to watch some silly comedy from the 1990s in 4K? Am I missing out on the stunning visuals or amazing sound design? I'll save my money and buy a film that is going to be appreciably better with an upgrade. Besides that there are only about 800 4K releases and a good many of those I have no desire to own. Only owning 4Ks is insanely limiting. Even if I had every 4K I desired they would make up less than 15% of my collection.

I think it all depends what you want out of movie collecting. The majority of my collection is blu-ray based, there’s a few 4K’s but I keep these to personal favourites, and there’s a nice collection of DVD’s, but again this is kept to ones that there really is no need to upgrade or ones that just don’t have a HD release.
I grew up in the 80’s so I started with VHS, moved onto DVD, embraced blu-ray which I love as a format and dip my toes into 4K. For me, blu-ray offers me everything I could ever want when it comes to movie collecting. Great picture, incredible sound, and seeing some of my fav films or tv shows in HD is a real treat. 4K is a little bit niche. You’re never gonna get everything on that format so save it for your favourite films.
It’s people like ourselves that keep physical media alive and the reason studios are so committed to putting out some incredible releases. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

    • @TheMovieCheerPodcast

I think I'd do the same if I got into 4k Richard, I'd go for a few of my favourite movies and still go for DVD for the majority of movies. Any films you'd like to see given a 4K release?

    • @richardwagner33
      @richardwagner33 2 роки тому +3

@@TheMovieCheerPodcast I think 4K is more suited to older films personally. Those that are shot on film just make a better transfer. I’ve got The Howling on 4K as it’s one of my fav movies, but I also own it on blu ray and dvd. I’d love to see some older TV shows on 4K, ALIAS would be brilliant, Buffy would be another one. As for films, The Hellraiser Trilogy while released on blu-ray and their brill, it’s clear that a 4K upgrade would make them 👌🏻 More horror films on 4k for me I think then.

I do exactly what you do blu ray seems like the sweet spot but I do love old school dvd menus extras and a lot of dvds look respectable with a 4k scaler so I don't upgrade them if I don't have to.

    • @mjwbulich
      @mjwbulich 28 днів тому

I'm in the same boat. I had a rather large VHS collection that I regrettably parted ways with in 2011 because I never watched them and had already upgraded my favorites to DVD. Spent over a decade collecting Blu Rays but even then I still had over a thousand DVDs. I'm not upgrading every single one to Blu Ray at a cost of thousands and thousands of dollars. And then came 4K discs. I'm not buying all my movies on a fourth format. Blu Ray is good enough and I'm sticking with it. What's been great lately is that some of the more collectible Blu Rays from boutique labels have been dramatically dropping in price now that the films have gotten 4K releases. I've been snatching up titles that were too pricey a few years. Good time to be a Blu Ray collector.

Great vid, I’ve subscribed ! I started buying DVDs again about a year ago when I couldn’t find a particular movie I wanted to watch on the four streaming services I was paying for. I’ve now ditched three of those services (still like Netflix for its original content). The picture quality on DVD is in fact still great, because at least some (possibly all?) have a better picture quality than the same show being on TV as far as standard def is concerned. For example when I've watched The Brittas Empire on Forces TV the picture quality looks a bit blurry, whereas on the DVD it's a lot sharper and better.

@@TheMovieCheerPodcast I'm not sure, it doesn't seem to mention anything in the instructions, but it is also a Blu Ray player so maybe it does.
It's a Panasonic DMP-BD84. I'm quite happy with it, it's only downsides are that it doesn't display any numbers so you can't see how far into the DVD or Blu Ray you are that you're watching, and on the very, very rare occasion (probably only happens about once a month) the TV screen will go black for about 2 seconds while I'm watching something. Not sure if all of these players are like that or whether mine is defective.

Hey there! Here we are in 2023, and this marks my 21st year since starting my DVD Collection! My collection began in November of 2002 courtesy of a birthday gift. It was the MGM late 90's DVD of SHOWGIRLS! From there, I was hooked on the format. As of now, I watch my DVDs courtesy of a 2020 Sony DVD player that's connected to a 2012 Panasonic Viera 32 Inch LED TV. Let me tell you, the sound and picture quality are still great.
The pride and joy of my collection is the first generation DVD box set of BATMAN: The Animated Series. It took a few years, but I was able to buy all 4 volumes and currently have several albums full of DVDs. I still purchase them, albeit on-line through, my Amazon Prime membership. I don't see dvd format going just yet but a lot of the machine manufacturers are stopping production so the discs may disappear as machines to play them on dry up. Many dvd's have special features which don't get included in blu ray or 4k versions conversely you can get atmos sound on blu rays which you can't on dvd. Im happy to carry on picking up all mediums and have a few fav films on dvd, blu ray and 4k formats even though i dont yet have a 4k player.

Yeah, that could be a big tell on what happens with DVDs, you gotta think if the players are no longer being sold that'll be it. New subscriber here. Just now discovered your channel. My collection consists mostly of DVDs, although I also buy Blu-rays. The quality of most DVDs is excellent, especially in high end companies like The Criterion Collection. Sometimes I upgrade a movie I have on DVD to Blu-ray for various reasons, usually the extra features. But I have no intention of replacing my entire collection with Blu-rays. Sometimes I've had DVDs that stop playing, but that hasn't happened very often. Sometimes I've had Blu-rays that had problems as well. I only replace items as needed. I also buy DVD-Rs, such as the Warner Archive series, and they play very well. AS for 4K, I still haven't watched one. The only way I'll get into 4K is if it becomes the only available format, and I don't think that will happen anytime soon. The discount prices of DVDs makes it easier for someone to start or increase their collections. Like you said, the most important thing is being able to see the movie.

Recent acquisitions I'm still watching through are the complete series of Star Trek Voyager and Top Gear box set of series 1-28 (over 80 DVDs of just the shows - no extras!). As of today I believe those sets are still only on DVD.
I still have a blu ray player and I plan on picking up some 4k movies but only of things that are my personal top favorites that are very special to me. And that depends also on if that movie even gets a 4k release.

I'm fine with DVDs as well. I find that many thrift stores get them because people die or many people have jumped to streaming so they get rid of their collection. When Disney+ launched I found handfuls of Disney DVDs I have never seen before on a thrift store shelf. I do have a media room and I do get all the disc formats but honestly if a movie is good enough your only focus shouldn't be that this could be so much better. My friend only had a 13" colour television and when you look at it was so tiny but once you got into the movie you wouldn't be focused on the size of the screen.

DVD quality can still look good if the effort is put in... But if it's not, they can look like a horrible muddy mess. But same can be said for Blu Ray etc. I've "upgraded" some of my DVDs that had terrible transfers and have had great BR or 4ks but I can't see the quality improving any further than it already has.... for me at least.
Oh I still have a corner of VHS too haha, but that's just because my VCR seized while I was digitising them. I'll only keep a handful in the end (mostly unofficial music bootlegs, a few official ones I'll keep that never got past the VHS format)

Yeah. I remember when DVDs first came out and the cheapest most basic DVD player you could buy was about $500 (US money). I wanted to dive in in a bad way but I had to wait until prices were more reasonable. I did collect DVDs for a while but stopped about 15 years ago.
Recently, I've started buying them again because (as you say) desirable titles can be had for cheap on the used market. And I don't have a 60 inch super screen so they still look just fine on my screens. The interesting thing is that every single used disc I have bought so far was in flawless condition. Not a scratch or scuff on it anywhere.
I actually kind of hope it isn't that widespread that people are still collecting them. That just means prices will stay low and most titles will be able to be found somewhere if you really look for them. I agree with you. I just want to see the movie in reasonable quality. I kind of do wish people would continue to buy Blu Rays though. At some point I will be getting a Blu Ray player.

Its very simple. You collected VHS / Beta / Laser Disc. Then DVDs came along. Keep collecting VHS because of the DVD, VHS become very cheap. Once DVD dropped in price, see which deals make it worth replacing VHS. Blu-rays arrive, so DVD drops very low, begin replacing the VHS with DVD. When 4K comes, Blu-rays drop very low, replace DVDs with Blu-ray, and so on. This allows you to have is every film you ever wanted in the format it is available. You have the VHS that didn't release on DVD, you have the DVDs not released on Blu-ray, and the Blu-rays not released on 4K. As long as you don't mind having multiple players, you are golden.

Blu Ray and DVD aren't mutually exclusive - easy to collect both and 4K if you wish, all playable through a single machine.
I lived through the VCR format wars and having backed Beta, was left with an obsolete format, before further expense moving to VHS. Valuable lesson learned!
The beauty of the standard 12cm disc is that any format based on this disc size (ok - allowing for HDDVD) can live on and obsolesence becomes irrelevant. A Blu Ray machine will play Blu Rays, DVD's (upscaled via HDMI) and CD's. I have Blu Rays and DVD's and i'm happy having both. My favourite films and tv shows (especially when the tv show was recorded on film) are on Blu Ray and tv shows from the 1960's to 1980's (and beyond) that were recorded on standard definition video tape look great on a well mastered DVD.
A well mastered DVD has great quality and still holds up quality-wise, unlike VHS with a Chroma resolution of 30 lines, which is so poor.
As long as there is a market for physical media, then the 12cm disc will be fine. Long live the 12cm disc!

Making the move from VHS to DVD was easy. The picture quality was better on DVD and I liked the form factor of disc vs large cassette. Making the move from DVD to BD was not as easy. I noticed some improvement in picture quality but not that much. Primarily it was the form factor as I liked the smaller BD cases for storage. I did not make the move from BD to 4K as I do not want to buy a new tv, player and discs. Today my collection is about 90% BD vs 10% DVD. Although frankly a well mastered DVD is good enough for me in terms of picture quality. I also like the nostalgia factor with DVD in that I kind of like the slightly softer picture with DVD. My most recent purchase was a DVD of a film that I have not seen before. Cost was the deciding factor the BD was $17 at Amazon while the DVD was $5. There’s many movies that you can’t buy on blu-ray like James Cameron’s the abyss for instance.
I truly don’t think DVD is ever going to die there’s still a huge market for it. And it’s incredibly easy to record on DVD. I was born in the 2000s when VHS was on its way out, however my family is poor so we kept a lot of our VHS tapes and just recorded most of them onto DVD, but eventually we got rid of pretty much all of them. And then eventually my family got more money we bought a Blu-ray player. I definitely can see your point about the price though the DVDs are much cheaper than Blu-rays. And I thought the same thing about 4K ultra HD for a while I thought there was no point in buying it and I could barely tell the difference in quality. I don’t have the same problem for VHS that you do there are literally hundreds and hundreds of VHS tapes at pretty much every goodwill and thrift store in my area and they’re all like $.50 each.

    You're so right about DVD.
I started collecting DVD again after purching Netflix for a few years and got rid of all of them.
The mean reason i started collecting again was to have the physical disc for myself instead of watching whatever was available on Netflix.
The second reason was that the content on Netflix was for my needs to short as I love the older titles on DVD.
And yes, nowadays they are cheap, I visit on a regular base some thrift stores and flea markets and come home with at least 20 to 30 movies each time, there are so many titles I still want to have.
I'm glad that I started collection again, picking the movie you want to see just of the shelf, put it in your dvd player is much more satisfactory than search through Netflix.
Most DVD's I buy are not more than a euro each, and just as you, quality is not the most important thing for me.
Happy collecting and greetings from The Netherlands.

I'm going to collect DVDs until they don't make them anymore and then I will still eBay hoping to find them. I'm 66, I'm pretty sure I'll run out of life before DVDs are completely gone or unwatchable! I have finally gotten a pretty good Collection after Collecting for 15-18 years. I used to have about 6,000 movies in VHS, but they all eventually broke or deteriorated. And there was no TV in there. Now, I'm at about 4,000 DVDs, lots of TV Shows, I count seasons and Collections as 1. So it's a lot more than 4,000. Of course, I don't have a lot of movies I had in VHS still because they weren't released in DVD, and probably won't be since they are being phased out. I prefer to own physical media that I can watch when I want to rather than streaming with buffering and commercials and high fees.

I amassed a pretty decent sized movie collection over the years and ultimately overdid it and regret it in retrospect. I should have been more selective in my purchases just from a storage perspective. That said, I downsized and now only occasionally buy DVD's. I only have a 2.1 sound bar and subwoofer and the audio from DVD's are more agreeable with my setup than Blu-ray which is usually more geared towards a true 5.1 or 7.1 setup. The video quality of DVD, especially upscaled, is still acceptable generally speaking. If the price of a DVD is a lot less than a Blu-ray, then I am much more likely to go DVD. But mostly these days, I stream my movies and shows, no physical clutter and I love the convenience. Still, it's nice to have physical copies of certain movies so this way you know that you always have it. I phased out VHS starting in 2000 and was pretty much out of it completely by 2007.

I collect blurays but do recognize that DVD is still relevant today. Boutique bluray labels would rather re-release a few cash cow titles over and over than upgrade a lesser known title once. Tons of my favorite movies like "Nurse Betty" or "The Magdalene Sisters" and "Bicentennial Man" will never make it to bluray because they aren't considered profitable enough. If I want to watch them on impulse without the internet then DVD is the way to go. There are some DVDs that have exceptional video presentations even near bluray quality like Robert Mitchum's "Track Of The Cat" or Otto Preminger's "The Cardinal" or Anthony Hopkins' " Hearts In Atlantis". Some are actually better than their bluray counterparts such as Eastwood's "Where Eagles Dare" or Mario Bava's "The Whip and The Body" or "City of Lost Children".

Yes yes yes. I'll explain why. I have a disc driver that auto upscales to 4k from bluray. It won't be long until the tech can do that from regular dvds. Right now most people are jumping to bluray / 4k and you can nab dvds wholesale for dirt cheap. Do it, store em properly if they don't have disc rot, and wait on it. Maybe 10 years till the tech comes up, and those dvds will be the OLDEST tech, which automatically makes it more collectible ( yes tapes exist but they degrade over time much faster than dvds) and worth more. What you can buy for 1-2 dollars locally may one day sell for 5 depending on condition.
My collection is currently around 2k with no dupes. Many are foreign and hard to find entertainment. I purchased 3 people's full collections and paid less than 2k for 2k usable dvds. Less than a dollar a pop buying wholesale. I have a pile of dvds from those wholesale purchases, about 200-300 that I could already individually sell for my money back.
My advice is cough up the 1k at a time for the dude selling his whole collection because he wants to upgrade. Buy the whole darn collection. Especially since you know he's likely a collector, you aren't getting low quality trash, and even when you are, it's a net even transaction (garage sale filler!)

Even the not so convenient records are prevalent again.

@@TheMovieCheerPodcast Physical. I went out of my way to find a laptop that still plays DVDs. Even my TABLET plàys DVDs.

I love them...I am not so interested in the new films...I love many movies but especially from the 50's to early 80's. I watch films that I missed and have gotten to the place where I may drop Netflix...I find the new films are not that interesting to me also the TV shows. My Netflix choices are more old films and I now have so many that I find Netflix is fading for me. As a movie buff that has installed a large screen and great surround sound it is a joy for me to have access to my library...
