The best solution is to fully lean into fantasy elements in the fantasy games, and fully lean into historical elements for historical games. But they half ass historical games so they don't appeal to either.

Vanilla Rome II is a severe disappointment that is entirely accurate. But they were saved by fantastic teams of modders who took that pile of shit and turned it into something actually enjoyable. I think we all know I'm referring to the team that developed Divide Et Impera. They practically saved Rome II.

One of the biggest problems honestly has to be that there appears to be no blood meaning they prob plan on making it another DLC on top of the $60 price tag

Those chariot charges had me dying 😂. Can’t wait to play medieval 2 for another 2 years!
they will obviously fix it still a alot of time before its released
More than 2
I can't imagine it would be difficult to take the combat formula from medieval 2 and implement it into a new TW game, but apparently that's not their goal right now.
i have a feeling they forgot or lost interest in unit colision completely, although shogun 2 combat is quite enjoyable specially the charges and the blood still it would be nice to havea new engine that combined the best aspects of the former engines although this will not happen.
What is the combat formula of Med 2?
Imagine Medieval 3 on the shogun 2 engine....
Idk what happened with unit colision. It is understandable with empire that was when they developed the current engine, but by the time of shogun 2 they had it fixed. Then it seems that they broke it for Rome 2 and never fixed again
@@victorromano6707 Basically we are talking about the combat simulation on the individual unit level. In the old games, there were subtle yet important differences which had a huge ripple effect up to the tactical level. They were much more dynamic and realistic. The newer games are basically a statistical numbers game - check the stats and roll a dice for each 1v1 "duel".
"Let's start with the positive : it plays like Troy" Also triggered me hard lol
Id love to see a new battle engine that gives us hours long seiges long pitch battles again.
Im not trashing, but imagine a 1 hour long siege just so the game crashes and you need to fight again
That would be an insta unninstalling for me
Ive had that happen once or twice on rome 1 and i was punching walls. I still think longer battles had more potential for a tactical approach and didnt feel like a quick mass brawl .
@@emperorantares7951new engine anyway, so just include mid-battle saves in the new features
What people don’t realise is that battles are both too short and too long. At the same time. Realistically any actual engagement in the ancient world (and medieval era prior to guns) would only last minutes due to exhaustion, but then would start up again after a rest. Oftentimes “battles” would last days as the skirmishing part would take a while before the main forces fully engaged in a massive pitched fight (which lasted very little time, no more than 30 minutes often because of exhaustion). So you have this issue where the game cannot achieve either result due to its design and nature. Also sieges are completely a problem in that you would not just be sitting outside a city for the multiple weeks (or months) to siege it down, you would be continuously launching things with siege equipment to wear down the defence. It’s not a single battle that makes the city fall or the besieged leave, but just the slow grind down which is hard to do in a turn based game. Also note that the settlement shouldn’t be the only ones suffering attrition during a siege, as it was often the besiegers that had the most issues with their attrition due to having completely foraged the surrounding area. Honestly it’s pretty unrealistic no matter what you do, and nobody will ever be truly happy with the results. Cheers!
Or better yet, Muti Phase Battles. A new Engine though is LONG over due.
It's ironic that the company is called Creative Assembly considering it is one of the least innovative game developers. They could have a staged battle system, for example a skirmishing phase of battle where vanguard calvary and light infantry meet before the armies are fully assembled for battle. This historically often happened in antiquity where foragers and scouts would meet and skirmish before sending messengers back to the army camps to notify them and ready them for battle.
You could have a retreating stage where a small section of your army could break off and raid the enemies baggage train at their camp. Often times the veteran soldiers would have all of their personal belongings and many times family members that traveled with them on campaign so losing the baggage train was a big deal and hit morale very hard. This historically happened often and would be another cool gameplay mechanic. This could be further developed on the campaign map as defeated armies that had their camp raided could suffer morale and supply penalties. I'm thinking you implement a post battle system similar to CK3 for this with defeated armies needing to retreat and regroup before reengaging. These are just a few concepts I thought of on the fly. Clearly modern gaming on the triple A level has developed to suits making heavy handed decisions and the dollar being king.
My biggest wants in terms of what to bring back are
1. Stylized huds that feel thematic
2. Stylized unit cards (learned to love Rome 2s mosaic art style)
3. Unit banners
4. Real general speeches
5. Naval battles
6. Chivalry/Dread mechanic from Med 2
7. Tangible control of city development (military vs commerce, with battlements upgrades as you upgrade your city IE med 2)
8. Non instant diplomacy (I know it's inconvenient/slow but having a high level diplomat felt so satisfying)
9. Control of armor/weapon upgrades in custom/multi-player battles IE Rome and Med 2
10. Literally just a full base game without having to pay DLC for a faction you locked away. I get DLC for expansions (legit ones) but DLC for blood or factions is ridiculous (and it's been a problem for over a decade)
We Literally used to have this in TW, and now have to beg for scraps while WH gets skilled out constantly
I feel like a whole new engine is required before this can have a chance in becoming reality
Dang man ive only ever heard people shit on the rome 2 cards, I think theyre awesome too - so much flavour to the units.

A new game to watch my units mathematical equation face another units mathematical equation represented by a bunch of guys doing random things without actually interacting
But they have interactions? They announced that there are combat animations where the units will react to weapon attacks and perform counters and even showed gameplay. Like rome 2. Actual combat animations for units in battle
@@Sobek1776 some random interactions sure maybe but I guess my comment is more to the fact that nothing you see really matters or is a factor in the combat. It’s just equations playing out and maybe a couple guys dancing a death scene. Look at the gameplay it’s still the same old blobs slashing at ghosts
Are you complaining that units have stats and that these stats are taken into account? I mean with or without fancy combat animations it comes down to "mathematical equation vs mathematical equation" in any case.
Or if it's just about wanting movie fight choreographies as in Rome II or Shogun II, I can understant that, even if I somewhat disagree
@@AXU67 the stats should be taken into account for the units actually engaged in combat. Now what we've got is an RTS styled clash of "units" that "math off" against each other where unit weight, size, slashing movements, physical contact, etc. aren't considered. Hell even fucking Rome 2 did away with the old fashioned TW formula where shields were ACTUALLY shields. I know right! Now shields are a "representation" of defense stats. They do nothing more than give the player visual feedback that this soldier has a higher defense stat than one without a shield (in most cases). Shields used to actually protect the unit model from being hit by projectiles. It's all smoke and mirrors. This is why people are itching for Manor Lords so we can ditch CA for pastures new.

I’ve been dying for CA to to add elements from the game “Ultimate General: Civil War” to their battles. Make it so I can’t see the enemies army and need to send out scouts to determine their position, add supply chains, logistics, larger maps with multiple potential places the battle could take place.
Sending scouts and give fog of war is definitely a good idea, but adding supply chains? That is a terrible idea, and adding along with larger map is a recipe for suffering in the game.
supply would be pain, Having to send scouts however would be interesting though you'd have to dedicated the 20unit limit to some scout units then so that may make thing interesting.
@@dfgfgh244 Yeah or there are some alternatives:
Option 1: Every army has "scout" units that are separate from your army stack. (They only appear on the battle map and you don't see them on the campaign map) They will only have 5 - 20 men in their unit and are extremely weak in a fight, but fast.
Option 2: Cavalry has the ability to "detach scouts", the manpower for the scout detachment comes from the cav unit they are detached from. They will have the ability to return to their original unit.
Also I disagree that supply would be pain as long as it is done in a fun way. I have some ideas, but at the end of the day it's subjective. Logisitics is just so important in warfare and I would love to see it represented and add a new level of depth to the game.

Maps should be 10x the size, you should start in a marching column & the enemy should be difficult to spot. A battle should take 40min & involve you using scouts to explore terrain & try to find the enemy before engaging.

All your criticisms are spot on. It really says something when the older games bring more to the table than the modern ones. Like medieval 2 is still more innovative that Warhammer, Troy, etc. sad state of things. What going on with CA?
Or, just play as Egypt on Rome II. Saved you $60 bucks.
Its sad that I would've been more happy that Pharaoh was another Rome 2 clone, rather than an improved Troy.
Looks like a mod....
mods are better than this 😂
@@Orgil. Thats is very true lol
60 bucks + paid game mechanics for a lackluster mod
I hope someone at CA actually watches your video and improves the game accordingly.
CA stopped listening once they release Warhammer in all honesty
One of the funniest reviews I have seen in a while. Nice job Apollo.
I laughed so hard when the dudes went flying and he was like $60 bucks ??
