"Popular" is a song by American alternative rock band Nada Surf, released as the first single from their debut album, High/Low (1996), in May 1996.

I can remember drooling over this girl in 1996. Her name is Sarah Sebestyen and she is 18 in the video. I was nearly 30 at the time, so probably shouldn't have been drooling over 18 year old girls but I still do it at age 56 so it's likely I am not gay. "Popular" was only semi popular in Australia topping out at #43, but was #1 in Iceland, #7 in Belgium, #10 in France and #13 in Sweden so it picked up a pretty solid following and I think a lot of that was due to the video.....and a very catchy bit of guitar.
The song is an interesting one as the co-songwriter credits go to Gloria Winters, a 50's actress who wrote an etiquette book for teenagers in 1964 called " Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity ". The majority of the words to the song come from that guide written by Winters, so she is a co song writer. She died in 2001, there doesn't seem to be anything out there about what her thoughts were about the song which is a pity.
Nada Surf never had a big mainstream hit again, though they are popular on the Alternative Rock market and this also charted well in the US on the Alternative chart. Interestingly it was Cars front man Ric Ocasek who gave them their first break and produced their debut album which includes this song.
The source file for this video came from a DVD called "Essential Music Videos - Alternative Rock" which came out in 2004. I did replace the audio with a lossless flac version, and blended the original intro in to it. This video is banned worldwide on UA-cam, so how long it lasts I don't know. The official channel version, while HD, is very washed out looking. See here :

The ABC's "Retro Month" in which they play Countdown episodes and other older music videos kicks off this weekend and I will probably be busy recording stuff on the weekend so decided to release this video now. Depending on what the ABC releases, I might only release a video mid week this month but we have no idea in advance what they are going to release. I also collect Countdown episodes, so it's important to make sure I get what comes out.
