Recently started following you as I love your information on running! I recently purchased a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro and I knew exactly where to go for information, and this video did not disappoint.
Looking forward to getting back into running and seeing how I can progress! Keep up the great work!
Also can’t wait for your merchandise I will 100% support you thank you for all your help so far
A very unique video. Real good. Happy running
Nice to see an actual runner show his set up. For workouts, like Intervals or Progression, do you stop and save, and start a separate activity after you warmed up or just hit the lap button to start your intervals or progression?
Great tips here. Always good to listen to the pros.
Great structure Ben! Thanks for the tips!
Nice video again. I find that for intervals in particular it’s good to plan them in Polar Flow - then the watch automatically buzzes to start the interval and you don’t waste mental energy on remembering times/distances or miss any button presses...
Super helpful video! Looking forward to getting more applicable use out of my Garmin data
So many reviews on the "best" watch or device, but very few on how to fully utilize them! Good stuff, keep it up.
Just upgraded my Garmin so this was super helpful. Cheers! 👍🏻
It was very useful. Keep guiding and inspiring.
Brilliant video.waitong for my fenix 6 .I've also learned how some of the sessions work from this video.
Found you today, bingewatching these. Thank you
Super useful video, thanks man. Loving this channel 🤙
Thanks Matt. Glad to have you following along!
Thanks for the Ben got a nice run on tomorrow and wanted to know how to simplify my data fields - next request will be show us how to get our Fenix etc to beep if we are running below pace time or beep again if we're running too fast
Would be interesting to do a video showing the training function. I’ve been using it for zone pacing as it buzzes if you go above or below zone. Also the pacing setup to show how far ahead or behind you are in relation to your target race. You can even specifically set them up for the course you are running with the right gpx file.
Thank you Ben Parkes. I would try those on my trainings. God bless! Take care!
For intervals I’ve found it much easier to create the workout in Garmin Connect then load it to the watch.
All you do is hit start then follow the plan on the watch. Saves any faffing about with lapping or whatever. The watch does it all leaving you free to just run!
Hey Darrel. I'll do a video on that, probably next week. Personally never really use it, but know some people do swear by it. For me I like to have the flexibility to made things harder / easier on the fly.. which I wouldn't be able to do if I had a workout pre programmed. Sometimes if I'm feeling good, then I'll do an extra rep, but then the watch would be beeping at me saying to cool down etc. So I just like to stay in control! But really valid point and will cover it next week hopefully. All the best!
Ben Parkes I’ve only started using it recently after I got myself a coach. I just create whatever workout I’ve been set. Really useful if the workout has plenty of different rep targets/recovery times etc.
Each to their own I guess. Chasing 2:28 like yourself :)
DarrelCooper awesome on the 2:28 dream.. which race are you targeting?
Ben Parkes Looking like VLM 2019. All being well! Maybe @ 2:35 in Dublin this October first.
Awesome. On the biggest stage there is. Was just reading about your 34:04 (sorry was google stalking!) sounds like you’re making some great progress. All the best for Dublin!
As a seasoned runner, this is great insight to switch things up on my wrist. #subbed
Nice video!! What did you select for upper screen in ultra/navigation?
Great vid many thanks
Hey thanks for the video Ben! How do you set up the interval screen as default? it is kind of annoying to have to switch from the default screen to the custom interval screen... Cheers!
Thanks, it was very helpfull
By the intervals it shouldn't be lap distance instead of "total" distance? (4:39)
Thanks for the good info. The only thing I’m missing when sitting my watch for ultra run is the MAP. Any idea how can I include it in my sittings. Thanks a lot.
Ben, I tend to use Garmin Connect to programme my training sessions and then transfer them to my Garmin watch but what I've noticed is that the paces that are displayed when I'm running are a little slow to catch up with my actual pace. As a result, the splits for the session on the Garmin app are not 100% accurate.
Is that something you've ever experienced?
Nice video!
Do you change your watch screens every time you go on a run ?
Thanks for this video! Have you noticed changes in your pace during easy/recovery runs over years of training? (at similar HR)
Hi mate do you put it in screen two for the interval ones
Hello! How do I set the map data field?????? Can get it right....
Hi, how do I set up my watch so that it gives me my time and alarm for every 1km that I run.?Thanks
What is the best good watch
Great informative vid. On an easy run my route undulates a lot. Do you keep HR avg or absolute HR under a certain value eg 150bpm thanks
If you're running an undulating route, then it's good to simply have 'average HR' on your watch screen and keep the average under 150 for your run.. That's what I'd do anyway!
Thanks man :) I really want a r8 roll recovery!do you think they are worth the extra over cheaper rollers?
If you can afford it (I know they are super expensive) then I'd say they are worth it for sure. Use mine pretty much every day! Appreciate all your support, thank YOU!!
Hi Ben. Interesting information, thanks!
I've been reading a lot of articles from old-school coaches/runners (and some younger ones) who are very opposed to GPS watches. They say it's better to learn to rely on internal feedback (feel/effort) rather than external, and also you shouldn't try to keep a single pace or HR because it might go up or down based on how you're feeling, elevation, etc. (as well as device inaccuracies). Any thoughts on the pros and cons? I can see both sides.
On an unrelated topic, how do you recharge your watch during an ultra?
Battery life for 935 is over 17hrs on GPS… so not sure he'd need to recharge it?
Hi Ben, for the Progressive Data Screen, must the Auto Lap be On or Off? Im wanting to better my time & pace for a 10km progressive run. I know you said Auto Lap is switched off for Interval runs.
Why Garmin restricts only 4 data fields. I am going to try downloading some race face.
Ben, ytou can program your workouts so that you don't have to touch a button.
Hi Ben my week consists of 3 5k runs around a reasonably flat park and my training status is usually productive or maintaining I've recently added a 10k road run to my week with a few vey small hills, my pace has dropped but heart rate is around the same higher in places , I was gutted when my status dropped to unproductive after the extra effort I'm using the finix 5
Don't worry about it Stephen, as you get fitter, you'll notice slight decreases in heart rate. I wouldn't worry too much about what the watch tells you concerning effort levels. You know your body better than the watch does.
Hi Ben! Great channel you've got here! I was wondering if you ever used a separate, from the watch, heart rate monitor such as the Garmin HRM? If so, do you have any thoughts on the reliability between measuring your heart rate on your wrist vs chest? Thanx. Keep up the good work! :-)
Hey! I use my chest strap when I want accurate HR data. Such as during sessions, hills etc. The garmin HRM-Run is really good. The wrist based is ok.. but far from accurate for me.
When I’m just running ‘easy’ then the wrist based is ok for a rough guide.
Simple answer chest strap is great. Wrist based ok..
@@BenParkes thanx!
I,m not a good bilingual person. So too many thing I don't understand. But thank you. this video give many information
I don't think it's possible but ill ask anyway is it possible to have differant screens setup for differant training days? i.e have a lay out for Race Day and a lay out for Intervals and one for easy days for example where I want to see the time of day ?
Very interesting. Something I never really considered. I use current pace rather than average pace for races
For me I find that current pace doesn't really tell me much, in terms of hitting a target time. But with average you can speed up / slow down etc and keep focused on hitting that pace throughout the run! All the best!
@@BenParkes I have this dilemma too. Average pace is smoother and better geared to hitting targets, however, if you are off pace over a few km, how do you know over what period or distance to alter pace in order to get back on track?. I suppose this is only really a problem if you havent looked at your watch for a while and you suddenly find that you are out, but in this case, current pace is more useful as you atleast have an idea of what you are actually doing there and then.. Anyway, I agree with you that the answer is go average and look at your watch more often ;o)
@@duncanmatthews1977 I use both lap pace (which is pretty good after like 150m) and average pace so I can see how the run is going for both short term and the whole picture. I also use Styrd for pace but still trust lap pace over current pace.
@@juggledave Do u know of any watches that let u adjust the instantaneous pace filter/update rate?, or lets u set the lap distance short enough to use as a non-jumpy steady instantaneous pace?, in which case it would be nice to have 2 lap distance fields since knowing the last km pace is still useful. Thank you.
AlexL, which watch do you use where the instantaneous pace is steady enough to use as feedback for running pace?
Hey Ben, do you find the wrist HR sensor accurate enough or do you also wear a cheat strap?
I wear a chest strap for my workouts.. but the wrist based is ok for easy runs.
Hi Ben, when you’re doing easy running, and you keep saying about zone 2 running, do you mean average heart rate or actual heart rate? I’ve been running for a few years, done loads of half marathons etc, but still, any form of running more than just walking and my HR is 155 ish…any ideas?
For marathon races, do you disregard HR in your screen as well?
I prefer to run marathons, well all races really, on feel.. rather than getting stressed over HR on the screen. But know a few pro's (not that I'm anywhere near that level!) like to have it on their screen.
How do you manage battery life of the watch on long ultras
I have a small portable charger that I carry in my pack. Then just plug my watch in to it during the race. It carries on recording the data and works exactly the same as when it's not plugged in. Something like this amzn.to/2BWaeuo
With intervals. The lap pace and last lap pace will sometimes show the recovery pace. Is there a way to only display the eg 1km repeats current an previous. Thanks
Darren Rutgers I have been trying to figure that out myself ?
Bothers me too. Would be nice to have some input how to handle it.
One thing I’d really like...for intervals is for the watch to give me an alert when the rest is over and start on the next work lap....any way to prompt when the rest is complete?
If you make a workout in Garmin Connect on your phone or PC and activate it on the watch.. then it will start beeping about 5 seconds before the rest finishes.
Will a created and downloaded workout trigger laps on the interval screen, or do I need to press some lap button anyway?
@@garthly This is all how you set up your workout. Laps can be triggered by a predefined distance, time or a lap button press. Garmin Connect create workout uses a spreadsheet format to set this up. It's a little work the first couple of times, but after it's setup it really works well. Frees my mind up during workouts to think about other things.
Re race screen and average pace, why don't you use lap pace since ideally you finish faster re negative split don't you ?
Mark Cameron Hey Mark.. the average pace is the only option that gives you the overall picture. I use to have 4 fields on my race screen, as had lap pace too.. so I could compare to average pace and see if I was slowing / speeding up.. and then use that to consciously try and speed up in the final 10k. I know it sounds silly, but it was just too much to think about when you’re on the limit so prefer to keep it super simple like this!
Hi i try to config a training but i have a problem. i config a distance of 100 km and a time of 24 Hours, how can i show me the 24 Hours as an cownt down ? is this possible ?
i only find the timer, but i need a cownt down ?
Not sure, but I believe it'll count down the time for you if you configure only the time, not the distance. Otherwise it'll only count down the distance. Make sense?
i have the same setup but pace instead of avg pace,,, difference between pace and avg pace?
ps: above data screen for race.
Can anyone help? How to set MAP on the upper data filed of nav?
Yeah, can't seem to find 'MAP' as a data field in Fenix 5x Plus. Maybe it's difference in watch models?
Doesn't seem to work any longer. Also haven't found a good replacement in the app store... shame, looks really useful.
No cadence? That seems to me like a data field that could be useful in a racing situation...reminder to kick things back up as your form degrades...
Great video, thanks!
Why do you preferred this watch over the Fenix line?
It's a lot lighter and the battery lasts longer. Other than that they are pretty identical really!
Ben Parkes makes sense. Also are your training plans online available in min/km pace?
They are in miles and km's. Pacing is in both units, so everyone is covered!
