When I was 12 or so, I had a lot of health complications and spent months in the hospital. I had the amazing opportunity to meet Darius (who is a local) just chilling and playing guitar for all the kids in the large activity room there. I had no idea at the time who he was, but I remember being the only kid to sit down in front of him and just vibe out and listen to him strum and sing some songs. I was astounded by how good he was, I think I even said something like "you could be famous or something!" lol. We spent a good while talking, exchanging stories, and he had the biggest heart and warmth of anyone I've ever met. When I told my mom who I met, she lost her mind being such a big fan. She explained who he was and I started listening to his music, I've never been able to live down that I got to meet Darius Rucker and she didn't haha. Growing up, he had a big impact on me that someone could be so successful but also so down to earth and generous that he'd spend his free time volunteering at a children's hospital. He never mentioned his fame to me and was totally content just relaxing and playing wonderful background music for the kids playing there. I hope I can always embody that warmth and humility.
