I think the main difference between the two is, America only understands its own subtlety, and they are often too literal. That means not understanding other people's subtle joke, they will take it literal, therefore not understanding. This interview was an example of that. When Dylan said, "They drop this macro-net of feelings all over you and say 'tat's how I am, see if you can stand up now'". Conan then laughs and says, "Sounds awful"! When you have to stop and think about a joke, deciphering it's meaning, you haven't got it.
Tell that to the people who live in places like China Town, Little Italy, Little India, and all the other assorted ethnic communities that exist all over the country. Just because people came to America, doesn't mean they left their country behind. Or ever let their kids forget where they came from.
Genes and ancestry definitely do not determine personality or culture. Conan may be 100% genetically Irish, but he's 100% culturally American, which is exactly how he should be. It would be very sad if Irish Americans hadn't moved on from the culture of the poor, repressed, conservative Catholics of 140 years ago. Irish people have moved on and so have Irish Americans, down their own distinct paths over many generations, in very different environments.

@@fintonmainz7845 exactly. Which is why I asked Noel Gallagher the same thing when he said he was “Irish.” I was like “aren’t your from Manchester” and he was like “yeah but my parents are Irish.” What a shitty excuse. However, I think you need to be more opened minded and thunk about how language is used differently from in different places. I. The US, where immigration was so prevalent, people would live in these super secluded neighborhoods where it was only Irish, or only Italian, and so they would call themselves that… because that’s how they differentiated themselves. But they don’t mean they’re actually from Ireland. Or from Italy. It means that in the context of northeastern cities with al these different ethnicities, their “Irish” or “Italian”. Meaning that’s the neighborhood they’re from. So stop being obtuse and thinking someone with a Harvard degree thinks he’s “from Ireland.”
Moran has a wonderful gift with words, which many comedians don't. He expects you to reach up to his level rather than talking in words of one syllable for the mouth breathers at the back, which is where US TV frankly ploughs its furrow.
Why is Conan asking a man from Republic of Ireland about uk audiences? I know he has done UK television but Why not ask him about Irish audiences since he's Irish!! It seems that uk guests always seem to make out that uk audiences are uptight and don't know how to have a good time. The reason we don't whoop and cheer every five minutes is because we want to hear the story and not have to wait for the audience to shut up!!
It just would be interesting to hear a different kind of question. English,Scottish, Welsh and Irish audiences are different from each other. I think US hosts forget that the UK consists of 4 countries not just London!!!
He lives & works in the UK, has done for a good 30yrs ......he has more experience of UK audiences. Do people on YT have an aversion to using Google? Or is it a laziness thing??
I like Moran and I love black books but this is all pretty cynical stuff. UK is his main audience, he mostly lives and works here, so presumably likes it, and he’s just playing up to American stereotypes of the British being reserved to get a cheap laugh.

I find everything he does hilarious, but I can see how someone that's more sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would struggle with his humour. Miriam, if you hadn't seen Bill Bailey before, is it safe to assume you haven't watched Black Books? Him and Dylan Moran star in it, and it's one of my favourite shows ever. When Dylan said, "They drop this macro-net of feelings all over you and say 'tat's how I am, see if you can stand up now'". Conan then laughs and says, "Sounds awful"!
When you have to stop and think about a joke, deciphering it's meaning, you haven't got it.
Y'ain't Irish Coco
I'm Irish. My families lived in America 160 years but I'm Irish.
No.
You're american
Tell that to the people who live in places like China Town, Little Italy, Little India, and all the other assorted ethnic communities that exist all over the country.
Just because people came to America, doesn't mean they left their country behind. Or ever let their kids forget where they came from.
It's an American delusion to think you're the same nationality as 160 years ago
And the Falkland Islanders are South Americans? Hypocrite
What is the Falkland island dude?
@@22grena
The people in the Falklands are British because their culture is British. Conan does not have that level of understanding of Irish culture.
I am Russian but I am 100% black, why not. If Conan can say some bullshit like this with serious face, why can't we all?
Because he's talking about ethnicity NOT nationality. Are you aware that there is a difference?
Genes and ancestry definitely do not determine personality or culture. Conan may be 100% genetically Irish, but he's 100% culturally American, which is exactly how he should be. It would be very sad if Irish Americans hadn't moved on from the culture of the poor, repressed, conservative Catholics of 140 years ago. Irish people have moved on and so have Irish Americans, down their own distinct paths over many generations, in very different environments.
Conan really shouldn't get other comedians on; they really highlight just how _unfunny_ he is.
A good talk show hist shouldnt try to be as funny as their guest, they should allow their guest to shine since thats the point of having him on
Actiomedey - Yeah but he's not even funny when there's no guest on so when one comes it really highlights it.
Comedy legend ^ watch his special “Monster” it on UA-cam
I might be Norwegian, but I have a feeling my early ancestors were kidnapped from Ireland as I am only truly happy if something has gone badly wrong(I told you it would go wrong didnt I???). Even better if it has only gone slightly bad for me, but more badly for someone I despise. Also my grudges have gotten to big to carry on my back, so now I rent a truck for them as I refuse to let any of them go.
Rustknuckle Irongut 😂😂 ☘😈
watch black books...its amazing.,..,,
And the difference between the British is that joke about the marcrell
That's British humour , I heard no man or woman laugh in the crowd apart from the host
“I’m 100% Irish” ... mmhmm Conan sure
Do you think he means he's from Ireland?
@@BP-or2iu Being Irish means you're from Ireland.
Only a total eejit would think otherwise.
He works mainly in the UK, he is married to a Scottish woman and raised his family in the UK, so it's a fair question, though I understand your point.
It just would be interesting to hear a different kind of question. English,Scottish, Welsh and Irish audiences are different from each other. I think US hosts forget that the UK consists of 4 countries not just London!!!
Do Yanks even know that Wales exists?
The only thing they seem to know about Wales is Michael Sheen and the really long hard to pronounce town!
He lives & works in the UK, has done for a good 30yrs ......he has more experience of UK audiences.
Do people on YT have an aversion to using Google? Or is it a laziness thing??
"I'm a 100% Irish" .... "oh yeah, name the president of Ireland!"
Saying he's Irish is like saying Americans are English?
Love Dylan Moran.
I like how this comment section is mostly the rest of the world Vs Americans calling themselves Irish.
Have him back on. More Dylan! ❤
DON’T POINT THAT GUN AT MY MUM!!!
I like Moran and I love black books but this is all pretty cynical stuff.
UK is his main audience, he mostly lives and works here, so presumably likes it, and he’s just playing up to American stereotypes of the British being reserved to get a cheap laugh.
nick260682 Exactly Nick!
I feel better about the way I'm dressed today lol
'My family has been in America for 100 years I'm 100% irish' no, just no
Conan's vengeance is to make us laugh ourselves to death. The truth is clear to me now.
The best US interview I've seen of Dylan Moran.
One of the best I’ve seen as well. He doesn’t look like he’s hating it. 😅❤
Dylan has clearly ben too my families Christmas Lunch!!!! The Irish are mad people but loads of craic!!!!☘️🇮🇪
He’s as Irish as lucky charms only Americans claim they’re another nationality than American
So if I claim to be British then I'm American?
James Dettmann your comment makes no sense because I know nothing about you
@@ThePhoneBook123ABC my point is ur saying that only americans say they are a different nationality so a British person like me could say they were British and therefore be American
Irish-American and I could have saved a lot of $ on therapy if I’d heard these two encapsulate it as “shame, blame, vengefulness, and bitterness” before I got out of my teens.
Why is he making judgements about UK audiences? He;s not even very funny actually, he irritates the hell out of me, something I unhesitatingly make clear if I'm forced to watch him live - you can't beat a UK audience for drumming a comedian off stage if he's just not very funny - he's terribly Irish of course, probably works well in Ireland and USA
he is only responding to the question he was asked. It's fine not to like him, different strokes for different folks.
well I guess what I really should have said is, what he's saying just isn't true... I've never seen an English audience sitting with its arms crossed - shouting people off yea, but arms crossed? No way... he's just doing a routine when he answers that question...
Well I'm sorry to hear you lack a sense of humour. Or most of one at least, because you've got to at least have SOME sense of humour if you buy tickets to see comedians you hate.
Insert Name Here I didn't buy a ticket - a friend took me to a 'comedy night'. Luckily the other two comedians were very funny, first time I'd seen Bill Bailery and Stephen Amos at all, never mind live. I just don't find this guy funny, possibly Irish sense of humour, maybe... quite 'blokey' too, at times bordering on cruel I find, not to mention pissed...
I absolutely love Dylan Moran. As much as I love him though, I can see how some people might not. He's super cynical, dry, pessimistic, sarcastic, and negative.
I love Bill Bailey's stand up too, but they work ridiculously well together in Black Books. You might like it, as Bill Bailey's character is very sweet, which is a good counter to Dylan Moran's character.... who is a cynical, drunk bookstore owner.
