As someone who has had many unsuccessful hunts myself, I never regret going out into the wilderness, regardless of what I come home with. You become a lot more in touch with nature when you're just stopping and paying full attention to your surroundings. Listening to the squirrels and birds, noticing all the signs of animal activity, paying attention to the wind... A freezer full of venison is always a nice reward though. Your hard work will eventually be rewarded.

When my brother takes me out he always feels bad and apologizes if we don't get anything. I always tell him don't apologize. I ALWAYS enjoy it and we get to spend time together like we would when my dad was alive. Going out is beautiful and challenging and special no matter what.
Yup couldn’t agree more. I misses a bull moose this year. Didn’t wanna shoot it in the ass and it was bouncing in and out of low spots in my scope it wasn’t worth it, didn’t get the moose but I gained some experience and learned how I can be better,
I hunted for 10 years before I got my first deer
So fun to go along on your hunts. I'm 71 and have hunted all my life, learned from my father who was never skunked. Elk, moose, bears, deer, he always succeeded. As a skipper on his own boat we had salmon from out off the Washington coast, canned and a freezer filled We had grouse, pheasants, all that meat every year in the freezer. Life with Dad was AWESOME. One of MANY skills to hunting is to never camp in your hunting area, youll just push the deer away from you. Always set up nearby and get up in the dark, get to where you want to hunt sit guietly in your vehicle/canoe until break of light, then proceed. Search with your eyes, not your binos. Use scope or binos only to confirm antlers once you've spotted the deer. The Great Oz has spoken

It's awesome to watch you do something you excel at, canoeing, trekking backcountry waterways. Your skills are amazing. Yet watching you venture into new experiences with hunting and seeing and learning new skills is great too. Your approach and attitude are spot on. Your success will come I have no doubt.

You and Clay are the reason why I got into grouse hunting. Something I found is that grouse will always stay in the same area like 1mile radius for their entire life. If you've found them once, you've found a spot to keep returning to. That's what helped me land my first ever with a recurve bow last month

Love the videos. Just a quick tip as a lifelong hunter, probably 75% of all the deer I’ve ever seen have been within the first and last 30 minutes of daylight. I’d suggest definitely staying out until it’s actually dark, you’ll have a much higher chance of seeing something!
Thats also why most car accidents with animals happen during sunrise or set.
deer can see best when it's dawn and dusk unlike us
but i've killed many deer and personally i've seen 90% of my deer mid day

hey Xander great video. Awesome that you’ve started to hunt and share your experiences. I started archery earlier this year and picked up a great bow hunting set up. I find it overwhelming at figuring out where to hunt with so many other hunters “claiming” their spots on crown land. Never sure where to go without bothering others.

Pick your high traffic spot. Get out BEFORE first lite. Sit still and patiently. When you walk after first lite everything hears you and or smells you. Let the deer come to you. I’ve harvested more deer than I can count with a bow.

Xander, You have found a great spot to hunt next year. Scout for intersecting trails next summer. Find as many as possible so it allows you to play the wind. I use ground blinds with a buddy heater. I am old and enjoy my comfort. Get in that blind in the dark. Sit as long as you can stand it. As you age you get better at it. I can see you harvesting a deer next year. My wife and I love your adventures. You make us laugh.
I was thinking the same thing. Bro has to post up at dark and just sit quietly beside a field or large opening. Never gonna get one trudging through the woods and stopping for a few minutes here and there.
Love how you enjoy whatever you are doing out in nature. Your perspective on hunting has made me think differently about it and i appreciate that.

Looks like you have found a nice spot for next year! Hopefully the wolves will not decimate the herd this winter.
Maybe get in there and do some preseason scouting to find their bedding and feeding areas so you can intercept on the way.

I watch lots of hunting videos. Most of them are guided hunts and success is very high as is the expense, I have taken a good number of those. By far and large most of my hunting was hunting deer in Pennsylvania first with my dad and later with my two boys. The largest part of those were unsuccessful but that was never a deterrant. On the hunts that are successful it erases all those cold hours when it seems there isn't a deer in the county your hunting in, Experiencing the beauty and solitude of the woods and sometimes seeing a lot of deer sign is all that you need to bring you back .Hunting is the real experience, success is a bonus. I wish you many years of both.

Boil 1 1/2 cups of water with oil until boil then take off of heat and add flour and stir vigorously
Then roast over a campfire. It’s a pretty filing food. I usually have some powder gravy and make dumplings with the dough

Invariably, when I take an older person on their first hunt it is usually after the first snowfall. I buy a bag of the chocolate covered raisins and put them in my jacket pocket. When following deer tracks ahead of the new guy I "seed" the trail with alleged fresh deer poop. To prove the freshness i will scoop up a couple and chew them to guarantee how long ago they passed.
A good campsite and hot food makes any hike better. Not sure what you would do with the deer body but I like seeing the variety of activities you do and the evolution of your camping gear. I use some of the ideas for my trips.
If there are no rocks and there are birch logs around you can also protect the ground with a couple layers of those. Since they're never quite dry they don't burn through easily, but they do burn enough to contribute to the coal base.

Xander it’s called recharging your battery. I’ve been hunting for 45 years now, didn’t matter whether I brought something back or not, it was just nice being out there.

Great video love your channel. Best thing to do when trying to hunt in a woods like that were it’s really noisy to move around is to find a good spot and just sit and wait for a deer to come walking past. Best of luck with your next hunt

Same age as you here, watched your content for ages, and similar situation in that i started hunting solo and had to learn as i went. Don't feel bad, took me a few years to dial it in. If you do want some tips or access to some land let me know as i only hunt it every other year.

To help with your confusion, a rub is where deer use their antlers to rub a tree. A scrape is where they actually use their hoofs to scrape the ground. Reason why you always see a low lying branch above a scrape is because it is what we call a “licking limb”. They will pee in the scrape and lick the limb letting does knkw they’re in rut. Does willl also use that scrape to let the buck know she is in heat. I don’t live in bear or wolf county but maybe that’s why you don’t sit before dark and after dark but down in the south we like to get in our stands or hunting position 45 minutes before sunrise and we will not leave our position until after dark. Right at sunrise and right at dark is PRIME time for deer movement. This may help you be more successful in harvesting a deer
Also you won’t catch me camping in a tent in bear and wolf country lol . We have a small small population of black bear here. It’s actually very rare anyone sees one and every so many years we will get a confirmed cougar sighting. I’ve never seen a bear or got a picture of one on trail cam but I have seen a cougar only once. But yea. I’m not familiar with bears, wolves, and cougars. So I’m not camping in a tent in bear, wolf, cougar country

nice chaga find, you can get some good vitamin c from fresh pine needls. and can make a fun soda from sugar water and pine needles in a bottle made fore pressure.

I live in the uk so strolling in the woods and randomly seeing moose prints or hearing wolves howling in the background is so alien to me lmao part of the reason i like watching these
Usually you’re suppose to scrape the black off the chaga with a brush or bristle and then grind it up and put it in a tea bag for it to have more flavour I know because my dad is a native medicine man

Hey Xander, its great you are desireing to bag your own meat for all the said reasons. There really is alot to be said for a rewarding primal hunt. The forest floor was typically loud for any movement. In those conditions; your luck of seeing a thing is small. I dont wanna tell you what to do: so I will only suggest a tree stand, gets you out of the noise and can help with your scent too. And dont camp any where near where you plan to hunt. Consider still hunting from a tree stand? find pinch points of deer travel and sit and wait, watch for fresh tracks heading into that area then sit and wait. Scout areas through out the year, Some areas will have more sign than others, bucks will travel long distances in the rut. Doe sighting are good as they attract the boys. I've often thought of an over under rig in some combination 20 gauge and 30-30
