I love that she's not just lip syncing along with her song, she's actually singing it as she does the video
She's using the movements of tectonic plates as a metaphor to illustrate the dynamics of personal relationships.
Huang and a film crew worked hand in hand with Björk to create the video, which was produced in both Reykjavik and Los Angeles. The bulk of the shooting was done in Iceland, a place that served as a big inspiration for the volcanic video. Huang explains how special it was to shoot in Björk’s hometown because there is so much palpable geothermal activity there. The actual volcanic activity in the video is a combination of puppetry, visual effects, and carved foam rocks that you get to see on strings and sticks in front a green screen. You also find out that Björk was actually in a sandpile for hours and obviously is quite a trooper. Seeing her manipulated and represented as a computerized rock formation is really fascinating, too. So much work went into the video.
I honestly did not recognize most of the added CG effects in this video, beside the two "main" flying rocks. Look at this Hollywood, it is not that difficult. You do not need to spend 200 million dollars on effects if your art director is creative. :)
That's a really good compliment - thank you. ya this video was sooooo effects heavy. A very small portion of the sand was real, the rest cg. All of the rocks rolling around on the ground, most of the mountainous ones as well, the lava and smoke, all the "strata" coming out of the puppet rocks, much of the sand, the geodes and rocks attached to her, and a lot more were all cg.

I am so impressed by the director. His respect and appreciation of Bjork is really great to see. I think a lot of people think that being famous is glamorous but you've got to put in work and the director recognizes the effort Bjork puts into her craft. I'm really interested to see any other music videos that Andrew Thomas Huang has directed. Great job to everyone involved!

Actually, that's a pretty common thing. Directors usually ask the singer to sing along with the track so that it looks more real than it would if they were just lip-singing.

Now that the finally did a video for Mutual Core (And the result is more than perfect) i think this is not only the best from Biophilia, but the best among all the videos of her carrer!!! As "thisistruxtc" said - about the unity of tectonic plates and volcanic eruptions, which you can compare to the unity and love of people - like Bjork does in her songs OR fing Bjork as Mother Earth explaining all the geographic changes from the begining of the world - like she does in Biophilia. Is it clear for you somehow? These are the meanings that I find here, in Mutual Core. :)
