    Awesome of you posting this video brother. I was born with Spina-Bifida and because of where my lession is I also have neurogenic bladder. I get the same dizziness when my bladder is beginning to get too full - usually too late and I begin to leak.
    Anyways, I appreciate your commitment to helping SPINAL CORD INJURY (SCI) patients deal with some of these situations.

    its so true being in a wheelchair is kinda the easy part, its all the other issues being a paraplegic that you have to deal with on a daily basis, toileting is so difficult, people do tend to see the wheelchair and think you just can't walk, but its so much more than that. thank you so much for showing awareness, wish I had the courage to talk freely about this. x

    I've watched a couple of your videos. I'm writing a screenplay about a character who is afflicted with a spinal cord injury and is paralyzed from the waist down. I had barely finished writing the first page, and I realized how ignorant I was to a paralyzed person's ordinary life habits. So I began to do my research and stumbled across your videos. At first I watched your video regarding bowel movement, and it was hard for me to watch it without feeling, I regretfully admit this, with pity disguised as compassion. Then I noticed something I was too blind to see at first. I saw a "normal" look in your eyes. I was blown away by it. You, sir, are a perfect example of how an adverse situation must be tackled. Head on, and with resolve. The best way to overcome hardship is to get through it. And you have. Thank you, you are an example to everyone who takes the time to watch you. Thank you for having the determination to help others that share your condition and I humbly thank you for helping me write a more truthful rendition of what a paralyzed person's life is. I'd love to put your name in the "Special Thanks" portion of the credits of the movie. God bless and thank you once again.

    Thanks for your videos Brian. I'm watching December 2024. I have a spine injury but can mobilise round the house. I need a power chair otherwise as I can't push myself. Your videos are really helpful. Just the point on bladder. People, including doctors, ask how I know I need to pee - but like you said, I just do! I too have the other issues you mentioned. Thanks for being so open and giving, it's really helpful. Greetings from North Wales UK. 🙋🏻‍♂🙋🏻‍♂

    Good info. Only thing to add is to start seeing a urologist at least once a year. They can help diagnose and prevent UTIs, possibly get you cheaper or free catheters and supplies through your insurance and give other advice. If you get repeat UTIs it could be due to things outside of your bladder maintenance, such as kidney stones.

    C6 Incomplete Quad Here:
    Haven't had infection in 6 years/never leak (prior to that had them constantly due to not knowing how to control anything). I intermittent catherize (non-lube), and I wait to wash my hands after (I learned years ago we are immune to our own germs). I limit the amount of coffee, beer and any diuretic beverages as much as possible as these cause you to have to use the washroom outside of your bladder's trained schedule. Much like our bowels, we must train our bladders (I typically pee once every four hours). I moderate the amount of water intake daily by increasing intake when urine looks cloudy/smells, and decreasing when I'm urine is transparent - basically it's better to drink over a long stretch of time, than all at once (this will throw you off your schedule). My urine output is also affected by other factors such as how full my bowels are, and if I showered that day. Lastly, every night I take 2000mg of Vitamin D, 2000mg of Vitamin C, a Men's pill and 400MG of Septra.

    I'd be interested in whether any of your doctors did anything like:
    1. Discussed with you what you are facing in regard to your bowel and bladder;
    2. Set you up on a bowel and bladder protocol;
    3. Recommended any reading material, videos etc. on bowel and bladder problems;
    4. Recommended any specialists who deal with or are trained in bowel and bladder problems.
    My doctors did close to zero. It was my neurologist and not my urologist who pointed me towards DDAVP (desmopressin) to suppress urine production at night.

    Hi great video. I am c6/c7 complete post 20yrs. I have been doing the intermitent method for abt 11 yrs but started getting frequent UTI and bleeding. I had a foleys put in and never looked back. I asked myself why didnt I do this from the begining. I quess intermitent works for some but with regular cleaning and hygiene of my foleys and legbag, last had a UTI 1 year ago. and it really great when I am at work. piece of mind. I just sometimes notice a slight smell, thats when I change it. literature states indwelling catheters can cause cancer and other complications. But I am content and happy with it especially when driving long distances. thanks for the video.

    Have you ever tried Speedicaths? Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance covers 200 caths a month, and Speedicaths are very similar to your hydrophilic ones, except they are in a sterile saline solution that works as its own lubricant. You can even put the cath back into its package/solution after using it so you can recycle it later if you are worried about running out. Also, cath extender tubes are nice because then you can just pee into a toilet or the grass without carrying around a big old bottle.

    Vasacare works for me. I take one 10 mg everyday completely relaxes my bladder. When I cath I average around 350 cc's four to five times a day. You don't have to worry about any leakage because of this medication. It was given to me from a doctor at Washington University St Louis. I have been in a chair paraplegic, t9 going on 50 years this coming April 2023. Any questions you can let me know. Jay Williams..

      Cool! That’s what the vids are there for. Yes I have occasional accidents but typically wear a men’s pad in my underwear just in case I leak. I do keep an extra pair of pants in my car if I have to change when I’m out but it’s rare I have to do that. #2 accidents are also few and far between but it usually means a trip home to take a shower. Brings a new meaning to, “sh*t happens.” 😬

    Wow, you’re amazing! I’m able to walk, but can kind of relate, I’m 49, but since I was 20 I’ve been battling Crohn’s disease and colon cancer, and after 34 brutal operations I now have less than 5% of my G.I. tract left, and now have something called a Kock pouch (yep, pronounced cock!lol! It’s named after it’s inventor, Dr Kock). Essentially, they removed and stitched shut my rectum, they removed my entire large intestine and almost all of my small bowel. As for my pouch, it’s a bag of skin made from my small bowel stitched to my abdominal wall, with an opening where my small intestine sticks out aka, a stoma, that I must insert a catheter into at least 8 to 10 times a day to empty my bowels, so I have a slight understanding of how you feel, but you my friend are absolutely amazing! I struggle so much just with my one issue, I don’t know how you’ve adapted so well just such a huge obstacle. I’m sure people say to you what they say to me, how brave we are, or ask us how do we do it, when in reality it’s not like we have any choice, we either do it or explode, LOL! I also have to use a catheter to empty my bladder many many times a month because my interior pouch, when full, or when inflamed, presses up against my bladder, blocking the ureter, preventing me from peeing, so I have no choice but to use a catheter, only difference is I’m fully “able-bodied”, but, I am legally totally disabled, and live my life on long-term disability because living with almost no intestine makes it really hard to get any nutrients from your food. Essentially I can’t eat a damn thing except soups, very soft meet which I chew the hell out of, a lot of crushed up supplements, and gallons of boost (and absolutely no alcohol whatsoever, or coffee, both of which are diuretics, and I already lose gallons of fluid every single day, I actually have to drink between 5 to 6 L of fluid a day just to stay alive. But as for your mobility…Actually, let me rephrase that, I can walk and sit, so I have a slight advantage over you, but from what I’ve seen from your videos I would never call you disabled, you don’t let anything stand in your way, and I admire you so much, as I’m sure millions of other people do too, thanks so much for making these videos and showing all of us that we can do anything no matter what happens to us, God bless my friend!
    PS - sometimes you just have to laugh at this, I’m sure you’ll agree that public restrooms are a nightmare most times, many times I have to use a urinary catheter and stool catheter (with only 5% of my bowel, my stool is basically just brown water) at the same time. Because I look “normal “,(I hate that term), anytime someone sees me using a handicap washroom I get yelled that, I get dirty looks, or I get the manager, or the police, called on me. A couple of months ago I was at a roadside rest stop on my way to Washington DC (I live in Toronto) to visit family, when this miserable old bugger saw me going into the handicap washroom, and started pounding on the door, calling me every name in the book, and threatening to call the police if I didn’t leave, so I went about my business, and yelled back “go ahead and call the cops, I dare you!”. And guess what? He did! LOL! Aweeeeee sweet revenge, The officer knocked on the door and asked me to unlock it, not knowing that I had both a urinary and a stomal catheter in me as I emptied my bladder and bowels at the same time. I tried yelling through the door to not come in until I was finished, but this old bastard started yelling at the cop to unlock the door anyways, so he did...... I am definitely not shy about being seen naked, after being a G.I. patient for the past 29 years, you lose all humility and don’t give a rats ass who sees your butt or your dick, but if you could’ve seen the looks on their faces, let’s just say I wish to God I had a camera, they looked like a couple of deer caught in the headlights of the car at night, they both turned beet red with embarrassment, and shut the door as fast as they could. I actually thought it was funny, started laughing. Once I was finished my business I walked out of the bathroom to see the cop yelling at this old man for wasting his time and for humiliating me, they both were so ashamed of what they did, but me being me, I told them if they wanted, I can get them in wallet size so they don’t do the same thing again to someone else. I just suddenly got a case of the giggles, I was almost in tears from laughing so hard, as the cop and this old man stood there staring at me like I had worms coming out of my ears. All I said to them was please be more considerate and do not assume anything in the future, to which they both agreed. The cop bought me lunch, and the old man look like he was about to cry. At first when I was still depressed, and desperately trying to cope with my new reality, I would’ve taken a lot of joy from seeing this little bugger suffer, but I grew past that phase a long time ago, and can now just laugh my ass off every time something like this happens, and it happens on a weekly basis I kid you not. This may sound insane but a part of me is a little envious of you, because people can see you’re obviously disabled, but when you have an invisible disability, you also have to face the nightmare of accusations and dirty looks, which makes your recovery twice as hard. With that however, you do grow thicker skin because of it, and can really gross people out anytime you want to! Lol!........ you’re talking to one of the very few people on this planet that can take a shit without taking off his pants, I wonder if that qualifies as a superpower?! LOL!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    I have been a para for 8 years and I used to straight cath but I found that I never got the sense that I was empty. I would keep it in until there was no more flow, but I could go through the hassle of getting back in bed and five minutes later I'd be wet and have to change sheets,etc. So now I have a suprapubic and at least stay relatively dry.

      +Jonathan Rekash I have some of the Magic 3 and like that it has the lube pack and green slide so you don't have to touch the catheter. The downside is they take FOREVER to drain my bladder. It easily takes twice as long and as the Coloplast...nobody got time for that. lol I recently switched to the Coloplast Speedicath which is pre-lubed and still drains my bladder quickly. It's also a little more stiff than most catheters so you can insert it without having to touch the cath at all.

    Have you considered or tried catheters that comes in the water already, or with a small pouch of water that you just squeeze to release the water to activate the surface of the catheter? I use the latter version myself for when I need to cath. I’m not paralyzed but have a genetic connective tissue disorder and suspect I may have tethered cord as a complication from it as I have some loss of sensation in my legs and bladder. Sometimes I only go twice in a day, sometimes I have to go all the time, sometimes my bladder doesn’t empty properly and sometimes I just can not pee at all on my own, so catheters are a great invention! The catheters I use are called LoFric Sense but I think they may only be available for women, tried Speedicath compact too but for some reason they make me bleed a bit even though the same size of LoFric doesn’t 🤔

Love your motivation level and watching you get dressed was amazing- I watched that clock behind you and I think you did the whole thing in about 5 min!!! Amazing- wonder if condom cath would help at night time - to avoid interrupting sleep- having to transfer... Love your videos!!! God bless

    I have a neurogenic bladder and need to catheter. . I have watched several videos concerning intermittent catheterizing. Still, none of the videos discuss the pain involved during and after the procedure. I am into my 11 years of neurogenic bladder problem and each time I insert the tube it hurts and even after. I have to take painkillers to get by the pain. Am I the only one suffering this pain?

    Hi , just wondering if you have ever experienced resistance when inserting the catheter and any blood clot to the tip of catheter after pulling it out. if so any tip pls ? thanks

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  8 років тому

      Yes I have had resistance but no blood that I can recall. Usually it helps to remove the catheter and change your seating position. This could help correct the angle at which the catheter is inserted.

    I have developed an issue where I have to urinate way to often. My urologist ran tests that indicate my bladder has little muscle function. He says I am not fully emptying my bladder hence it refills faster. My beginning treatment is that I have to catheterize myself three times daily, morning noon and night after urinating. The idea is to fully empty my bladder and provide some relief from going to the bathroom. I am now going about every hour. At night it is like 2 -3 or 4 hours between trips. I have full bladder control, I do not pee on myself and am able to "hold" it for any amount of time. I am really afraid of this, the catheterization. Does it hurt? Thoughts on my condition. This developed after spinal surgery where L 3 4 and 5 were fused. Of course the spinal doc says he had nothing to do with it.

    Hey! Your videos have taught me so much. I'm a newbie paralysed 7 months . Wondering what the situation is when we go out drinking... Nightclubs etc.. Do we have to drain really often in nightclubs ? Because before I got injured I remember how often i needed the toilet after a drink.

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  8 років тому +3

      Yea, when I go out I just have to cath more often. Sometimes I wear a foley catheter with a leg bag when I go out. This way I can just drain the bag when it's full and not worry about when I have to go. This is especially ideal when out at functions where a clean bathroom is hard to get to. (ie, concerts, festivals, etc)

    Did you have issues with leakage soon after your injury, or was it something that developed over time? Could it be something that develops as a result of waiting to long and having large volumes?

    I was born with spinal bifida and now wear a catheter all the time but before when i was self cathing i was alsp put on the med for my bladder called vesicare and it worked so much better for me then oxybutnin and i only took at once a day before bedtime! Maybe u should try it and they also have oxybutinin in patch form for u instead of pills 3 times a day.

    Great info Bryan. I've high functioning c7 incomplete but recently having some bladder issues where without warning, I start to pee. This isn't with a full full bladder but at anytime even after peeing recently. I'm going to ask about some of the meds and maybe go to more catheterization per day than 2. I order some of the self lubing hydrophilic. Thanks for the ideas.

      +Todd Register Ask your urologist if you're having bladder spasms. You need to avoid those because it can raise your Blood Pressure, and they will come on very quickly with no warning.
      I usually only get them when my bladder is in trouble, like a bladder infection. Get a sample of this leakage to your urologist and talk to him/her about this.

    • @ParalyzedLiving

      Paralyzed Living and whenever you had your last drink, how many times of cathing every hour do you go back to your normal routine?

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  7 років тому

      owereb Usually after I quit drinking and pee around that hour interval i usually have to cath less since my body dumped a bunch of fluid. Alcohol dehydrates you which is why you pee a lot when drinking and then afterward you don’t pee as much. It’s not an exact science and it can vary greatly on how much fluid I drank earlier in the day, how many beers, etc. I’ve gotten used to listening to my body but it isn’t as easy with a buzz. On many occasions I’ve had to pee way too much and the next day my bladder is irritated so I have to go more often. Like maybe every 200ccs. Sorry I wish there was an exact answer but the body isn’t always predictable. I wear a pad in my underwear most days just for peace of mind.

      I never cath in bed. If I get the feeling I have to pee I get up and go in the bathroom to cath. I can't actually "feel" when I have to go but I've been able to tune into the signs of needing to go. It's usually an uneasy/sick/achy feeling. That's AD (autonomic dysreflexia).
