this was honestly such a helpful video! ive been a huge fan of bad apple for nearly ten years now and i think it’s time for me to take the plunge into touhou :) also, side note: the “tomboyish girl in love” melody is very similar to a vocaloid song. i don’t remember which, but it’s the exact same melody lol
you're thinking of "Kasane Territory", with a few corrections, being that teto kasane is not a vocaloid, and the song "Kasane Territory" is a parody of "Tomboyish Girl In Love", not the other way around. hope this helped!!
Touhou is the only series I've played that actually lives up to it's reputation of being incredibly difficult. To anybody else getting into Touhou: Please, start with Azure Reflections or Imperishable Night.
Thank you for this video! I’ve always loved the Touhou designs since I was a kid but never really got into the series besides a few fanmade medias so I wanted to officially buckle down and get into it but was kinda dumbfounded :P
Appreciate you for making this video, now i have a few games to look forward to. I think I'll start with Touhou 10 since it's already on steam, also if you haven't checked it out Touhou Spell Bubble on switch is a pretty good game.
Oh my, I've always thought that the creator of Touhou only wrote/made the characters and soundtrack, but I had assumed everything else, including the official bullet hell games, were fan-made. Well then, both bullet hell and fighting games are just absolutely not my thing, and it's the same for just appreciating soundtracks.. Still, I'm glad this video existed. Cause now, I know better. ( Reaching your channel was a bit of a journey XD Found your channel from seeing someone remake the Rick Roll MV using the strategy game EU4 by editing save files. The same channel did one other video that was on Bad Apple. I watched it and thought: Oh, I've heard this a few times before. Might as well finally look up the original video/Touhou explanation on YT considering how much fanart and doujins I've encountered ever since I started watching anime back in 2016. And I saw your Bad Apple video at the top 10 results, watched it, and watched 4 of your explaining Touhou videos.)
Very nice introductory video, although I would've really liked the photography games to be mentioned for people (like myself) who enjoy shorter bursts of difficult gameplay as opposed to a longer storyline.
Didn’t talk about those because I don’t have much experience with them, but Jacoder was telling me how they started with Impossible Spell Card, which isn’t exactly a photography game but is in the same vein of “shorter burst”.
i found 6 accidently and played it years ago then after a few years i played the fighting games where i really liked the first one and currently im playing Touhou Puppet Dance Performance and am loving it
Maybe you did heard someone say this or maybe you didn't... I want to play Touhou because of Undertale, and I've got an experience in the bullet hell genre because of Chiken invaders series. I've just finished Touhou 1 and it's REALLY AMAZING!!! Edit: I didn't mean Chicken Invaders is an actual Bullet Hell... What a dumb thing to say (;-_-)
I actually started playing Touhou because of Undertale DDD animations. of course there are more reasons, but undertale ddd had made me choose PCB as the first game. Mostly because of this border of life remix ua-cam.com/video/5zuftG67C4w/v-deo.html
I think once I get my own PC I'ma start with Luna nights then play Azure reflections, 10, and 6. Then I'll go from there (btw thx for making such a good video you deserve way more than 3k subs)
Thanks for the video. I wanted to enter the world of touhou but didn't know where to start. Thanks to you I started reading scrollery manga and gonna buy original and fan made games and vn. Thank you man of culture.
Man, I used to listen to Touhou music all the time back in the mid to late 2000's when I was little. I really miss the old internet days before it really popped off and now I wanna get into the games. Thanks for the vid.
Funny to think how I got into Touhou. First I just came across Night of Nights while searching some electronic music and ost remixes, then ytpmv's lead me to touhou ones, such as the one and only PhilipOnBread, which slowly devolved into looking up touhou remixes of popular songs and downloading them. Mostly just like the most popular 20 and having like 10 remixes of each lol. Then a full game's ost (Ten Desires I believe) sometime in highschool, and only then, years after only recently did I go full goblin and get into the lore. I also played TH6 and 7 at one point but gave it up after getting like halfway in each. Long way to go with no end in sight!
Got to know the series through a legendary meme video of McDonalds remix of UN en Owen was Her. Played the first two official fighting games. Had a lot of fun. Tried beating TH 6 for about a year. It traumatized me and made me give up on ever playing a shmup for 12 years. Snorted fan content and OSTs during the period of not playing anything main series related. Watched a guide by Shmup Junkie in how to become good in shmups in 7 days. Went back to TH 6 to give it another chance, and after 2 days I beat the game in 1cc on Easy, and managed to reach the final boss on Normal for the first time. I am so happy that I went back. These games look amazing, and 6 is already pretty fun. ZUN's idea to basically make his works public domain with some caveats is a practice I still wish to see more of in the gaming space. It worked wonders for the franchise, allowing all kinds of people to enjoy and get to know the series in many different forms and interpretations. Fumo~
Some new things I could add: - TouHou 15.5 (the last fighter game) is now available on the Nintendo Switch! - TouHou Spell Bubble is also pretty good, most notably for the songs full of Internet Culture it introduces, lol. It's on Switch. - If you like Die & Retry's, I'll recommend TouHou 15 Kanjuuden. It's one of the harder TH games, but it has a chapter system that makes you replay the same shit again and again until you can beat it. It's really good to... well, get good at TouHou.
Thank you so much for this video! I come from osu! and I loved some of the TouHou's tracks and remixes but I didn't know where to start and this video helped me out a lot
I'd say other good starting points are the fanimes as you can see a lot of the characters and the world quite quickly like fantasy kaleidoscope/ Memories of Phantasm just runs through several of the main the games story line's. you can even find it on youtube: ua-cam.com/play/PL1o_fjC1Q3lHGK1_2dI868lBRa1S9lqCy.html touhou is really just a bottomless pit of fan works that you could probably spend years sorting through and barely scrape the surface. I'd say the community is one of the most creative and welcoming, and really fucking weird at times but beautiful. and the references are _everywhere_ once you know what to look for.
I just discovered that the wallpaper on my desktop I've had for over 3 months is from the Touhou series. There are so many characters I've seen a lot everywhere, but I never knew where they were from. Thanks for sharing your opinion! I might try Luna Nights even though it's not the best to start with in terms of storytelling, because I am a fan of 8 bit-styled rpgs :D
One thing I'll say: my first touhou game was 08, imperishable night. The music, story, vibes, and graphics are all absolutely fantastic but you will learn _very bad habits_ with respect to the timing of bombing out of getting hit. Strongly recommend starting with 10 as mentioned in the vid! Subterranean Animism is also very fun.
Thanks for the video pal! I've been meaning to play a touhou bullet hell type of game in a while after playing a random bullet hell game (app) with a piano rhythm game mechanics (which ngl, is addicting but did burned my eye a bit lol)
Yo, thanks for the informative video! I remember dipping my toes into touhou when i was younger and just started getting into my weeb phase during puberty. I played the embodyment of the scarlet devil and enjoyed it, but it was too difficult and I moved on. I did however like the memes, music and characters, especially Marisa Kirisame. a year or two later when I was a bit confused about my identity, I wanted to go to the local comic con to cosplayas a girl in a cute dress, this girl being Marisa Kirisame. I had a great time with my friend, and the costume still hangs in my room today, quite a few years later. Alot has happend since, but I have recently gotten back into anime and trying out some new and old games again. I have a cute Marisa Fumo who I bought to remember that special day who I always see when on the PC, and decided to try and get into Touhou again. Your recommendations sounds very fun and you go very well about showing different options and explaining the pros and cons. I think I'm going to start with Azure Reflections as it looks very cool. Again, thanks for the great video, seeing Marisa and Touhou in general really brings back some fond memories in the weirdest way possible
I know this video is a year old, but I'll hope for a reply anyways. Great video, it's well structured and you make very good arguments both for and against each option. On the fangame front, do you think Puppet Dance Performance would do a fine job showing the world of Gensokyo to a newcomer? Now that game is a massive thing, containing locations and characters from every official work (PC-98 included :D ) at the time it was released-- and the Shard of Dreams expansion and SoD Extended mod add areas and characters from further works, keeping up to the latest ;) Plus, Pokémon-like gameplay is definitely more accessible than both danmaku and fighting games. I also think there's a print work you didn't mention that could also be nice for getting into the lore: Perfect Memento in Strict Sense. In it, Akyuu gives plenty of information on the various locations and characters appearing in EoSD through PoFV, and even the backstory for the Spell Card system. One may also have a look at Symposium of Post-Mysticism, where Akyuu adds further entries for the characters in MoF through TD. And you can read all of this in the Touhou Wiki, both in Japanese and translated to English. Of course, Akyuu's entries aren't for everyone; they might put off people who don't like reading much. They also do have the downside that Akyuu exaggerates some details to make various characters seem more dangerous than they really are-- might even give the reader the impression that Gensokyo is a bleak, deadly place rather than the fun, light-hearted setting it generally is in practice. Plus of course, HM onwards aren't covered because they came out later, so that's a lot of missed lore to catch up on later.
My brain hurts a lot Also bad apple and an crossover are the main things that kinda introduced me to the game years ago as a child and just now want to get into it. Yeah, I take a while to get into games, shows and other media most of the time lol
If I still remember correctly. I discovered "Touhou" back in 2012 with "crazy windows 7 error remix" (which turned out to be that song about Alice) But, the true experience was in 2016 when I discovered and played "Touhou 7" and that's how I got myself hooked up to the franchise 😍💞✨
I find Night Of Nights as a cool song, I find out it's from Touhou, I feel like I've seen Touhou a bunch of times, I figure out it's a bullet hell game, I wonder where I should start. About 4 hours later, I think I have a headache now (btw I'm starting with Azure reflections but it took me so long to figure out where to start lmao
Yeah, I guess my first exposure to Touhou are the memes. A crap ton of Cirno memes, hahaha. I kept seeing her popping up in various artworks and memes, so I decided to look up what series she was a apart of. After that it was the music the caught my interest. I haven't touched any of the games since bullet-hells aren't quite my thing, but I guess I'll check out Luna Nights, since I'm more familiar with Metroidvania games than bullet-hells. Thanks for the starting recommendations.
I got into the games the same way I do with every franchise I'm interested in: starting from the first game and working my way up from there (yeah, I'm a lunatic...)!
Thank you for this video, it was really helpfull! I really want to get into Touhou and I actually thought there was an anime out there so I was shocked when I realized there wasn't? :'') I'm not a big gamer, so bullet hells and fighting games aren't my thing ;_; are the mangas enough to get into the lore? and the fan games? is the one mentioned in the video enough to understand a bit more or will I always lose for the fact that I'm not playing the games :''')
Most of the Manga on their own will give you a good idea of character dynamics and the like. Fangames can teach a lot too, but might not always be accurate (which only really matters if you care about things being canon-accurate)
I don't think I'd recommend Mountain of Faith for beginners. As a newbie who can clear normal with a few shot types for each game from TH6 to 8 along with 50%-70% of every extra mode, I hit a brick wall with 10. Easy mode was easy until the last boss. While in normal mode it's pretty hard for a beginner to accumulate lives for the last boss. I know it's meant to be played with occasional bombing since it uses power rather than stacking resources for later but because of that i find the bullet patterns harder than the previous games. PCB has that supernatural border which can be somewhat manipulated in your favor. IN's border team is way stronger than the homing shots from previous installments making training a breeze, along with those last spells that although cost 2 bombs it makes it easier for newbies to save themselves. The only reason I'd see MoF as a good starting game would be the fact that it's more basic. But EoSD with the hitbox on focus patch does a better job at being vanilla with the least amount of gimmicky patterns or mechanics.
How i got to know of Touhou... well, I got addicted to Osu many years ago and as the years go on in that game, you basically hear every touhou song but the remixes.. oh there are so many remixes and even Japanese singers having vocals etc. It's so cool, I love almost all of those songs. But there is one Japanese band that stands out among the others when it comes to remixing Touhou, and that's UNDEAD CORPORATION. They recently uploaded all their early albums on Spotify, so you can finally find them easy now (contrary to how it was before) and they are basically ONLY touhou remixes but HEAVY METAL (melo-death metal) . it's some of the coolest sounding metal I've ever listend to. Where my favourite song is 二つの世界 "futatsu no sekai" aka "two worlds" I also love the song "Frozen" One of the more memorable Touhou remix songs I knew from Osu however has to be this one ua-cam.com/video/JL7DpttN56Q/v-deo.html
In all honesty I just want a guide on each character if there's a book I'll probably buy it I just want to read about one character and be obsessed with them
if you don't care about gameplay and just want to play for the stories, i reccomend trying out the newest mainline game, touhou 17: Wily Beast and Wicked Creatures. in terms of storywriting and music compositions, it is one of the best out there along with the early games like touhou 7/8/11. the storywriting is probably one of the most interesting i've seen in a while. instead of the usual "oh no a bad guy appeared let me beat em up real quick"(ngl, most of touhou mainline stories are like these just with different scenarios), it's much more complicated than that. if you like interesting/complicated storyline i highly reccomend touhou 17.
The plot of touhou games seems to start to get pretty serious starting from Double Dealing Character. Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom has a pretty dark plot as well.
It's like watching cartoons for pre schoolers as an adult. You are basicly relearning stuff that are so self effident, that you'r often times not really focusing on it. I hope this makes any sense

TYSM FOR THIS VIDEO!!! i had no idea what this series even was but now i definitely gonna try some of these games!!
Osana Reimu needs bigger disclaimer for the feels, I was not ready.
dude, your content is literally amazing, the way you structure your videos is 10/10. how are you not more popular than this???
14:48 I literally finished watching that yesterday and I cried SO MUCH on it
God I love your content, long live touhou.
thank you very much, I've always wanted to explore the touhou universe and narrative and now I have the tools to do it, thanks
Just watched this after your video on Bad Apple :)
Your content is really nice so far and I'm excited to see you grow. I've been a mild Touhou fan for years (drowned myself in OSTs and TH 6, 7, and 11) and I think you just relit my passion for the series ^-^
this was honestly such a helpful video! ive been a huge fan of bad apple for nearly ten years now and i think it’s time for me to take the plunge into touhou :)
also, side note: the “tomboyish girl in love” melody is very similar to a vocaloid song. i don’t remember which, but it’s the exact same melody lol
you're thinking of "Kasane Territory", with a few corrections, being that teto kasane is not a vocaloid, and the song "Kasane Territory" is a parody of "Tomboyish Girl In Love", not the other way around. hope this helped!!
Touhou is the only series I've played that actually lives up to it's reputation of being incredibly difficult. To anybody else getting into Touhou: Please, start with Azure Reflections or Imperishable Night.
i first found touhou from roblox funky friday, a friday night funkin' knock off game and was obsessed w the soundtrack, i love touhou sm now
Even three years later, I'm glad to see this video get put back in my recommended on every new YT account I make
CONGRATS ON 1K MATE, little late but to the future that lies ahead may you continue to Grow!
Someone recommended me to start from Lunatic Kingdom. That was ...quite an experience...
Thank you for this video, I was always skeptical on where to start but this video helped alot.
Spell Bubble is so sick! I think I have like 30 hours in it
Oh my, I've always thought that the creator of Touhou only wrote/made the characters and soundtrack,
but I had assumed everything else, including the official bullet hell games, were fan-made.
Well then, both bullet hell and fighting games are just absolutely not my thing, and it's the same for just appreciating soundtracks..
Still, I'm glad this video existed.
Cause now, I know better.
( Reaching your channel was a bit of a journey XD
Found your channel from seeing someone remake the Rick Roll MV using the strategy game EU4 by editing save files.
@@Megapig9001 ohhh yeah i always forget about ISC for some reason
i found 6 accidently and played it years ago then after a few years i played the fighting games where i really liked the first one and currently im playing Touhou Puppet Dance Performance and am loving it
the best way to start touhou is with koishi komeiji's heart throbbing adventure
i agree
*Please no*
wait no!11!1!1 start with amogus!1!!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!!1
Maybe you did heard someone say this or maybe you didn't...
I want to play Touhou because of Undertale, and I've got an experience in the bullet hell genre because of Chiken invaders series.
I've just finished Touhou 1 and it's REALLY AMAZING!!!
Edit: I didn't mean Chicken Invaders is an actual Bullet Hell... What a dumb thing to say (;-_-)
No reply? OK
I actually started playing Touhou because of Undertale DDD animations. of course there are more reasons, but undertale ddd had made me choose PCB as the first game. Mostly because of this border of life remix
ua-cam.com/video/5zuftG67C4w/v-deo.html
I got into touhou by richaadeb’s covers of many of the songs and omg i love them
I think once I get my own PC I'ma start with Luna nights then play Azure reflections, 10, and 6. Then I'll go from there (btw thx for making such a good video you deserve way more than 3k subs)
Thanks for the video. I wanted to enter the world of touhou but didn't know where to start. Thanks to you I started reading scrollery manga and gonna buy original and fan made games and vn. Thank you man of culture.
well i just downloaded touhou 6 off of a website and i already love it. so good!
hope you purchased it
sooner or later
I started with the Arkanoid clone on PC98 and then I got a nice surprise near the end of Luna Nights
I can objectively say this video is the best video on UA-cam to get into the touhou rabbit hole
because princess inada is scolding me is by far my favorite touhou OST ever
Fumo~
As far as touhou based music goes I've been listening to a lot of stack recently, love that artist
My favorite song by her is reverse rebirth trigger
I believe I've played at least a good bit of touhou games as a child, but never knew I was playing Touhou
Some new things I could add:
- TouHou 15.5 (the last fighter game) is now available on the Nintendo Switch!
I'd say other good starting points are the fanimes as you can see a lot of the characters and the world quite quickly like fantasy kaleidoscope/ Memories of Phantasm just runs through several of the main the games story line's.
you can even find it on youtube: ua-cam.com/play/PL1o_fjC1Q3lHGK1_2dI868lBRa1S9lqCy.html
touhou is really just a bottomless pit of fan works that you could probably spend years sorting through and barely scrape the surface.
I'd say the community is one of the most creative and welcoming, and really fucking weird at times but beautiful.
and the references are _everywhere_ once you know what to look for.
ABSOLUTELY agree with your starting lineup. 17 should be the next game, imo, as the animal spirit mechanics are extra super fun.
I was waiting for him to talk about doujins but he never did.
That's how i got into touhou.
Touhou used to be at the top of that before Kantai Collection arrived
Subterranean Animism is also very fun.
thanks! im starting with touhou today and it was really helpful good work!
I got into touhou through TPP. I really like pokemon and am having a great time with tpdp
Love what I’ve played of PDP. Too bad it’s a pain to install lol
@@Megapig9001 Agreed. I'm only using puppets of midbosses/bosses I've beaten starting with esod, and it's been fun. Too bad I can't beat Sakuya
casually watching this vid knowing i'm not getting into touhou. your voice is quite relaxing though.
Ikr his voice is calm and nice
I wanted to get into touhou because everytime i think of bullet hell i think of this game, might try it now
should've started with "play touhou 15 legacy of lunatic kingdom"
anyways very bad piano who did the piano music ugh wow thats bad
why are you like this
people don't deserve to start on clownpiss and dorime
Liberty is ez
Thanks for the video pal! I've been meaning to play a touhou bullet hell type of game in a while after playing a random bullet hell game (app) with a piano rhythm game mechanics (which ngl, is addicting but did burned my eye a bit lol)
I started with Lotus Land Story. Now I get absolutely pissed when someone knows Bad Apple, but has never even heard of Elly.
Plus of course, HM onwards aren't covered because they came out later, so that's a lot of missed lore to catch up on later.
luna nights got me into touhou and i have no regrets, sakuya best girl
this is just like when i got into kagerou project a couple years back
Great video. Helped me a lot with my decission. Thank you a lot :D
Fun fact: I learned about Touhou because a few weeks ago I rewatched Bad Apple and I saw Touhou on recommended
My brain hurts a lot
Also bad apple and an crossover are the main things that kinda introduced me to the game years ago as a child and just now want to get into it. Yeah, I take a while to get into games, shows and other media most of the time lol
If I still remember correctly. I discovered "Touhou" back in 2012 with "crazy windows 7 error remix" (which turned out to be that song about Alice)
But, the true experience was in 2016 when I discovered and played "Touhou 7" and that's how I got myself hooked up to the franchise 😍💞✨
I keep seeing these plushies in my friend’s room, now I’m jumping down the rabbit hole
After seeing all the Fumo memes and watching Bad Apple on practically everything imaginable, I had to understand what TouHou was. Thanks
If i play TOUHOU, i would likely to choose "precision" type than "aiming" or "scattered but painful" shot cuz why not
I find Night Of Nights as a cool song, I find out it's from Touhou, I feel like I've seen Touhou a bunch of times, I figure out it's a bullet hell game, I wonder where I should start.
Fangames can teach a lot too, but might not always be accurate (which only really matters if you care about things being canon-accurate)
this is a well made informative video. 5 stars
But EoSD with the hitbox on focus patch does a better job at being vanilla with the least amount of gimmicky patterns or mechanics.
came to touhou from luna nights, also mainly because i fell in love with reimu
Very informative, thank you sir.
Where my favourite song is 二つの世界 "futatsu no sekai" aka "two worlds"
I also love the song "Frozen"
One of the more memorable Touhou remix songs I knew from Osu however has to be this one ua-cam.com/video/JL7DpttN56Q/v-deo.html
one thing that I learned from being a fate fan is you can start wherever you want really, it hurts more if you think more
i saw bad apple on my front page so i watched it and saw touhou mentioned in the comments. and thats how it started
For beginners, I recommend Perfect Cherry Blossom, if you want better graphics then choose Hidden Star in Four Seasons
In all honesty I just want a guide on each character if there's a book I'll probably buy it
I just want to read about one character and be obsessed with them
Hmm interesting series I'll try to get into it
if you don't care about gameplay and just want to play for the stories, i reccomend trying out the newest mainline game, touhou 17: Wily Beast and Wicked Creatures. in terms of storywriting and music compositions, it is one of the best out there along with the early games like touhou 7/8/11.
the storywriting is probably one of the most interesting i've seen in a while. instead of the usual "oh no a bad guy appeared let me beat em up real quick"(ngl, most of touhou mainline stories are like these just with different scenarios), it's much more complicated than that. if you like interesting/complicated storyline i highly reccomend touhou 17.
The plot of touhou games seems to start to get pretty serious starting from Double Dealing Character. Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom has a pretty dark plot as well.
Don't know why I'm watching this since I'm already a fan and I'm trying to 1cc PCB
It's like watching cartoons for pre schoolers as an adult. You are basicly relearning stuff that are so self effident, that you'r often times not really focusing on it.
I hope this makes any sense
