Oh man, this sounds so awkward because of the opposing pitch making the sound of hammering a piano.
I never understood why these power ups were timed. Taking damage and losing the fire and ice flowers I understand.
Its cause of how Mario Galaxy handled power ups, they were treated more like transformations that change your move set rather than add onto it, but and Infinite Fire Flower would mess this up.
If you listen closely, you can hear the star theme (though very out of tune). It's more noticeable in the Ice Flower theme as the star theme slowly rises pitch.

The Meting-ice flower: Similar to the Melting ice ability from Kirby and the crystal shards. It lets mario shoot out flaming ice balls, that almost emidiatly melt.
