Sometimes SE does these "show piece" cutscenes to introduce something new to the game, i.e. a new job (the Rogue / Ninja for the Thancred scene) or other elements. This is why that particular cutscene stands out as much.

also that specific one is probably the most jarring due to the low budget at the time.

I mean, Ninja was not new when the thancred scene dropped, it was one of the ARR jobs, but it's entirely possible that SE likes to show off jobs that are lacking in population, hype up the class fantasy to get people curious. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is why a certain character who shall not be spoiled became an Astrologian later in the story. They do a similar thing with the warrior of light in each expansion to get people playing the job that will have unique job dialogue for MSQ (dragoon in heavensward, monk in Stormblood and dark knight in Shadowbringers - we don't know what Endwalker will be for sure but my money's on paladin, based on the trailer).

I think part of the problem is that ppl from other mmos, especially WoW, are stuck in a mindset that all the good content is at the end. So they're in a big rush to power through to endgame. It took me a while to learn that this game really is more about the journey.

If you're talking about ARR patch content - while that's true, there was also a lot of problems that were trimmed or cut out of the patches that helped streamline it in 5.3. 2.1 for instance had like 9 quests deleted because they were all padding. 2.3 had a really annoying bit in the Sylphlands that was kind of funny but went on for like three quests and no flying made it ass. And a bunch of other little stuff throughout the patches.

I think the main reason is ffxiv doesn’t make part content irrelevant the same way wow does. Specially if you consider alts. Who does old raid at the cap level of a given expansion with gear of that expansion? Loads of raids aren’t even available anymore. Also the timeline of the world is completely bonkers in wow, and not just because of cataclysm.

A big factor in the shift in quality between ARR and post ARR patches (and expansions) is that ARR was developed in tandem with the development team ALSO still supporting and updating and patching 1.0 - once 1.0 was taken down and ARR was out, then all the development could go towards the patches, and not having to split focus.

Whether or not someone is into anime but likes a good MMO experience, I'd definitely recommend giving the trial a shot. It will feel kind of slow for a good while, but taking the time and progressing in a comfortable pace with no money invested really helps with that.

You can easily play at the most casual rate imaginable and not feel left out or punished, because the old content is still populated and encouraged to do (through daily roulettes, new players coming in and whatnot), there is the plain grindy content for people who want to do it (ie. eureka etc) and there's multiple difficulties of raids and trials to clear if you feel like wanting some more challenging content.

A more major issue of the "ARR is bad skip it" crowd is, fundamentally, that ARR and the patch content *is* the worst stuff in the game. By an astronomical mile it is the worst stuff in the game. Writing, acting, animations, story. Every single thing that comes from Heavensward onward blows it out of the water so cataclysmically effortlessly that it can be almost embarassing.
This leads to people going "Oh god they won't even get to where it gets really good" and overcompensating by trying to manage expectations. But, the internet being what it is discourse doesn't have nuance so it quickly turns from "ARR is rough but has a good core and promise and sets up the rest of the game perfectly" to "ARR is garbage and you shouldn't play it".
ARR is fine. It really is. It's fine.
But when what comes after is mindblowingly spectacular, "fine" feels like garbage.
That isn't to say ARR and the patch content doesn't have problems. Especially before the culling, there was a *lot* of busy work and some parts of the story were incredibly slow. Some of this is because they were still learning their engine, getting used to using the quests to tell a story, and getting comfortable in the world and characters. There were portions of 2.x that were literally "run from one end of a map to the other repeatedly to have one line of dialogue with an NPC". And, having gone through it when it wasn't culled, I did experience a lot of fatigue going through it because it can feel like a real slog. Part of that, I think, is they didn't really consider what it might feel like playing after the fact, and I suspect playing through it was it was released originally was probably a lot less of a slog. Sure, there's like fifty quests per patch, but when you can spread that over a six month period between the patches and fill it in with the side content they released at the same time it's far more managable.
But mainlining 200 quests in one go is an entirely different experience.

I also can't see how you don't detract from later expansions, at least Heavensward, by skipping the story that underpins it. ARR is the opening act of the Zodiarc story. @@joostleisder1956 The difference is the purpose they serve in the story. The normal mode trials and raids are there primarily as a vehicle for story. They are there as setpieces during the leveling experience, giving you a nice climax for a storyline or a zone quest, and a launching off point for the next part of the story. And if you do them as they're relevant, they can still be reasonably challenging and require some knowledge of the game mechanics, telegraphs, and your own jobs abilities. And it would be incredibly rude of them to lock you from progressing in the story behind high difficulty.
The normal mode raids, like say Alex and Omega, are there for similar reasons and to introduce the concept of the fights and mechanics. They're fun and furious fights that can be usually reasonably easily pugged and are designed to allow most people to pass through them and see the story the raid tells.
The major and important distinction is : they are there for story. To allow people who are only okay at the game to experience story. To not lock progression of the *main point of FF* behind high difficulty.
That's not why LFR is there. To say "Normal mode is just like LFR why do people hate LFR if they like normal mode raids and trials" is to fundamentally misunderstand, either willfully or through ignorance, the purpose of the content and its place inside of the progression of the game.

The main difference I can see between the WoW and FF raiding scene came to me when I thought about how the WoW players reacted to people beating LFR Ragnaros for the anniversary event. People were being called noobs because "it's hurr durr Ragnaros, it's super easy, people are wiping they suck, lol, look at these noobs celebrating an LFR Rag kill."
In contrast, all these streamers trying out FF are celebrating the raids that FF vets can just roll over, yet...they're congratulated, encouraged to keep going.
It makes me think that we WoW players were and still are so bitter because we truly hated WoW but had this weird Stockholm syndrome relationship with it and it made us all assholes. We hated playing it, we hated the systems, the story, but it was OUR game, it was THE game. Our eyes are being opened to just how wrong we were on a lot of things.

Honestly if anyone *REALLY* wants to compare difficulty between the 2 games, most ex-WoW players (myself included) can agree the difficulty goes like this - from easiest to hardest:
    1) FFXIV Normal
    2) WoW LFR
    3) FFXIV (Hard)
    4) WoW Normal
    5) FFXIV easier Extreme fights (like Bismarck, Ravana, Shiva etc.)
    6) WoW early Heroic bosses = FFXIV standard Extreme fights (Ifrit, Leviathan, Garuda etc.)
    7) WoW standard to final Heroic bosses
    8) FFXIV hardest Extreme fights (Thordan, Shinryu etc.) = WoW early Mythic bosses
    9) WoW standard Mythic bosses = FFXIV standard Savage bosses
    10) FFXIV hardest Savage bosses (O12S, E8S etc.) = WoW hardest Mythic bosses (Archimonde, Kiljaeden etc.)
    11) WoW Mythic Uunat = FFXIV A3S pre-nerf
Not putting Ultimates on here because they’re a different animal entirely - they are more of a test on focus and endurance rather than difficulty.

The combat and how they go about with the bosses is something I immediately felt but couldn't put into words. It wasn't until I started doing savage raids with a static and playing some turn based RPG with the same friends that I realized that "Omg, FF14 feels more like a turned based RPG as opposed to an FPS or action game!". Everything you do and how you fight the bosses feels like a real time turned based game.
Despite the combat being as fast as it is, every point of a battle with a boss feels very memorable cause it goes hand in hand with your rotation and to optimize your rotation, burst windows and CD's, you start memorizing parts of the fights that allows it or fits it best, which makes the boss battles feel way more slower than they actually are, like a turn based game where each action matters.
Realizing that made me realize why I like FF14 so much in its harder content, as fun as action games are, due to their nature the gameplay are oftentime quick with very little memorable parts, whilst playing turned based games every step feels weighted and important, making fights take longer, giving you time to memorize the enemies to best win a fight, and ontop of that when you do it feels very satisfying.

    • @Inhaledcorn
      @Inhaledcorn 3 роки тому +1

Yeah, that's what really makes me love FF14 so much as well. It really captured the feel of a turn-based RPG while still having some action elements. Everything you do feels important. Movement and actions are planned to best take advantage of every opportunity you have. People have some fights planned down to the GCD. I think that's how some players actually managed an all-tank UCoB clear.

Level 80 PLD who runs a static here: and let me just tell you that you've barely even _scratched the surface_ of "Extreme" (or rather: 'higher difficulty' content) in this MMO. Many new players will run the ARR Extreme Trials and think to themselves, "this is as difficult as it gets in FFXIV?" -- and the answer is a HARD no. In fact, even if you run the fights on minimum item level/echo off, you've still only scratched the cusp of the difficulty ceiling in this MMO. I think back then they were still sort of figuring the whole "difficulty/challenge balance" thing out.
The _real challenge_ starts with, in my opinion, Stormblood raids/trials and beyond. Yes, even Heavensward Extremes somewhat pale in comparison to SB or higher... and yes, I _am_ talking about Extreme or Savage difficulty, not Ultimate or anything crazy like that. This is majorly due to a huge difference in design philosophy from the developers: I think they only realized after Heavensward that they were going to settle with Extreme Trials and Savage Raids as the "high end" content, and then Ultimate as the "hardcore." They also likely learned a lot through player feedback.
Anyway, just figured I'd let you know that you've barely breached the cusp of what FFXIV endgame fights/content/raids/trials are like. You're in for a wild ride.
Edit: I noticed you also commented about the 24-man raids just being more of a "story driven" thing. This actually isn't the case at all... once again... when you get to Stormblood and beyond. The 24-man Ivalice raids you'll unlock in Stormblood, and the NieR alliance raids in ShB, are actually pretty challenging and extremely fun. Don't get me wrong, they're still a "spectacle" and quite jaw dropping, but you'll also be having a LOT more fun.

Super glad you're enjoying FFXIV! I played WoW from launch to about a month into BFA and something just "clicked" and I realized that the Warcraft franchise was no longer what I fell in love with. FFXIV stole me completely with its super narrative focused (AND REALLY GOOD) story, the community is fantastic, and it still has a metric boat load of genuinely difficult content. I used to have a UA-cam channel (think it has like 1700 subs or something LOL) where I reviewed games and I went back recently to watch my initial video review of FFXIV back in, like, 2014 or something and even then I said "Damn! If I wasn't playing WoW as my main game ('cuz WoW doesn't respect your time and you have log in every day on every character to do your chores... ugh, garbage) then I'd be playing this game!" IMO, it's more about the amount of quests, with dialogue heavy cutscenes, you need to go through before finally moving on to HW. Future post-expansion content drops added less quests overall, which means it's easier, or at least less lenghty, to go to the new content. I mean, only post-ARR has like, what, 100 MSQ? Other expansions don't get to 50, so I can see veterans dreading what new players may think when they get to post-ARR MSQ.

How do I go about finding a group for coils, just list in party finder? Most posts I see are maybe 1 listing for turn 5 on Zalera.
My thoughts were I’d level to 50, I’m currently 58, do all ARR content up til HS and then level all other jobs and DoH jobs to 50 before moving to HW content, rinse and repeat. Is this reasonable?

Hey there. I only play FF14 for about 4 months now but let me try to help you out: As far as I know Extreme is only for trails (1 boss battle) while Savage is for Raids. Coils is basically a savage raid (without telling you). If you really think that you and others are overgeared for certain extreme trails or savage raids... You always can create a open entry for the party finder and:
Activate minimum item level (means gear gets scaled down to lowest level possible)
Deactivate the echo (which normally gives you a small buff after every party wipe)
But be warned, extreme trails and raids with min item level are really hard. I did the first turn of coils with it and it took us nearly 2 hours to finally take down the last boss. Best place for finding willing players would be probably a free company (guild) or a cross-world-linkshell (for parties of players that are in the same datacenter but on different servers.) Or just create entry in the party finder and hope that people want to join you.
Hope that helped you a little :)

For difficulties, Trials have Normal (only in ARR), Hard, Extreme, and more recently Unreal
Raids have Normal, Savage and Ultimate, all only for normal raids. Alliance Raids are 3 part storylines, no extra difficulties, and are effectively very long dungeons with 3 full parties.

A lot of people view Trials as part of raids for difficult group content - generally you get dungeons -> Alliance -> Hard Trial -> Normal Raid -> Extreme -> Savage -> Ultimate.
Especially since Extreme weapons usually are what you want for Savage raids.

I had more fun with a lot of HW dungeons than I did with some of the raids and trails in ARR.
