Thank you for the fabulous video today, my friend! The tour of the yard was awesome, to say the least. The CN train crossing the bridge and running along the river was absolutely fantastic, too! That's always a great place to film. I really enjoyed seeing Walter and Roger, though! 😃😃😃❤❤❤ Thanks again for the video, and thank you for being kind enough to answer all of my sometimes stupid questions, my friend! Please tell Walter and Roger I said hi, and please be careful out there in all you do! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Your opening shot of that tower and the two story building are part of the CGW museum which includes a map of the yard and shops hanging on the wall which shows at least two turntables. The museum was closed when I passed through Oelwien but thanks to another UA-camr rail fan, a glimpse of it is available. And as always, you dazzle me with your drone skills and video. Thanks
Hello Red, there are a large number of freight cars in the yard. The old locomotive roundhouse is also great, your drone flight over this facility is very nice. How relaxed your dog is lying in the car. Very nicely filmed the CN freight train as it crosses the river and drives along the river bank. Very nicely filmed, thanks for showing it and warm greetings from Germany. Wolfgang
@wolfgangpfeilergartenbahnd6530 Yo Wolfgang! You're welcome and yes the dogs were pretty relaxed. They join me on my railfanning especially in the Winter👍
I have incredible slide shows from the Oelwien yard from Nov 1988 and Summer 1989. Rows and rows of classic CNW motive power before it was either sold or scrapped. Some of my favorite childhood memories with my father.
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 The MNA "Missouri and Northern Arkansas" in my area does car storage for profit. In Crane, MO, the siding is full of boxcars and coal gons. And, in the past they stored tankers and frac sand hoppers. That might be the same thing going on in the yard you droned.
Great videos Red , never knew the oelwein yard was that big . Saw an old illinois central coal or grain car heading across the bridge in CF black one and had the logo yet , and not in too bad a shape.
That was a good tour of the old Oelwein shops to see what's happening there these days. When the CNW group had a tour there within the last 10 years they were working on Center beam cars that had sat for 5 years and also stripping down and rebuilding Auto racks from the frame up for TTX. The View today shows the Center beams apparently rehabbed and repainted but virtually no autorack cars in sight. That work may very well have been transferred to their shop in Logansport IN which specializes in them. I was surprised at the number of tank cars because at that time there were. Virtually none. Still plenty of covered hoppers to work on but virtually no boxcars nor any Intermodal cars. Amazing to think at one time that was the big hub and now those are some of the last miles still in operation. Even stranger had to be the lonely feeling of the Rock Island Branch line that passed through. Good to see the CN local charging along along with the furry Buddies who's fur looks like they're ready for winter
@paulbergen9114 Thanks Paul! I was surprised to see so many center beam cars. They must have had a switch engine somewhere on the property. Pretty much just the Oelwein yard and the stretch of track going to Waterloo that's original CGW. Yep I think the dogs are ready for the cold. The smaller one actually prefers the cold!
. @3:30 the Drone is above some of those BNSF rotary feed cars apparently converted from coal cars but their lid is missing. It comes from some Cargill plant in the middle of Iowa and they show in about three places in the yard. @5:30 if you zoom in a bit you'll find one of their EMD switc😮her's not too far from a long white building sitting by itself. For years they had 2 SW1s.and 1 was usually kept inside. I took a look as to what they offer for services adds all the usual items except tank cars appears to be either just linings or interior washing and cleaning and no actual tank repair but it's a convenient place considering all the oils syrups and ethanol
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 Doing some research, I haven't found anything yet. On Google Earth going back 30 years, it's been the current way at least that far back!
Great vid, that yard was neat.. So many cars just sitting there. Did you say that they repair the cars there? If so, they got a lot of work ahead of them... A question 4 U, whats the longest train in feet or miles that you have ever caught? The trains up in that area just seem so so long, its amazes me the length of them.. Thanks for video and keep em coming... Thanks again!!!
@georgearchambault6185 You're welcome Arch man! Yes they repair rail cars there. Probly the longest trains I've see are some of those double coal trains. I'd say just shy of 3 miles long on the big ones.
And heres an interesting, but very true fact, in the 1940s, when TOFC was being tested, the CGW used large 2-10-4s to pull blocks of the primitive trailer flats. The other road that helped pioneer TOFC, was the South Shore electric line in Indiana. (It hadnt been thought of to try diesels at the time.)
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 yes!, that information was in the instructions of a 1950s era Walthers 75' trailer flat kit that i put together, even had a picture of a CGW 2-10-4!
I enjoyed the drone tour of the former Chicago Great Western/Chicago & North Western rail yard in Oelwein, Iowa that is now Transco freight car repair facility. I see that the Chicago Great Western's engine repair facility is no longer on there. That ex-GCW facility was the location where Chicago & North Western rebuilt all their GP7s, GP9s, SD7s, SD9and SD24s plus the surplus GP7s and GP9s that they purchased from other railroads and used locomotive dealers. The CNW's locomotive rebuild program took place in the 1970s and 1980s. I remember going to a Chicago & North Western Historical Society Annual Meeting that was held near Oelwein, Iowa. There was an optional bus tour to Oelwein that allowed CNWHS members to tour the Oelwein Rebuild Shops and the work that was in progress at the time of the tour. The drone footage Canadian National's L571 crossing the Cedar River bridge in Cedar Falls, Iowa and traveling along the Cedar River past Cedar Junction was beautiful to see. The Cedar River is very tame now unlike the raging waters that we saw earlier this year. Red, you might be interested in a video that Jaw Tooth posted on his UA-cam channel on 16 October 2024. The video runs a little over 34 minutes and shows the combining of soybeans by someone who leases the property from Jaw Tooth to grow crops. The unique feature of te video is the fact that Jaw Tooth was able to ride in the cab of the combine for a portion of the video. (Posted on 17 October 2024 at0045 CDT.)
@thomasmackowiak Thanks Thomas! I have a friend that was a diesel mechanic during the 80s and 90s in Oelwein. He was transferred to Chicago after CNW closed the Oelwein shop. I'd like to ask him about the rebuild programs you spoke of👍Yes the Cedar is quite tame for sure. We are back in a drought and a red flag warning.
lot of capital resource ($$$) sitting in Yard. Seems to me, they should be going somewhere making money. Always wondered when I drive by municipal building, a hundred brand new cars sitting. If it was me, I'd run them day and night. Digs looked really enthused.!
Pretty cool seeing an ex CGW rail yard still getting some use, good job Red.👍🏼
