- Follow along as we show you how leeches are caught for the bait store. Ontario has strict rules about live bait, in the past we did not trap many leeches but with the rules bait stores can not bring in bait from other areas anymore. Leeches are great live bait for walleye fishing and easier to keep alive during the summer when the temperature rises.

This year here in michigan a dozen leaches are $7.99 .....thats why im watchinh this video ,I wont pay that , or 6 bucks for crawlers. Prices have gottten crazy . I like to use the little leaches for bluegill and the big ones for smallmouth and brown trout .... Thanks for the video

i have watched a few videos on leech trapping. It is pretty intersting and if i didn't find the little buggers creepy, i would give it a shot out on my pond. I know there are bloodsuckers forsure.

Excellent for bass fishing as well, that’s all we use! Smallmouth and largemouth bass!

I saved a pile from this spring trapping will try and save them all next year, they worked great in the leech traps.
I might have to build one of those leech traps for personal use. I don't fish much but I used to trap some with liver in a minnow trap
Can you show a video of how you setup ur traps and how you bait them and what type of materials they are made of.
I use buckets with screen funnels .
That seam to work well but there are better traps built every day.

I best catch so far was 10lbs we set them about 18 inches deep using fresh liver for bait. Towards the end of the video at 16.28 we show the trap and how we clip it and bait it.
You shouldn't paint your trap... I've been trapping leeches for 20 some years... I'd put them traps by them trees... watch for different veg growing Lilly pads cabbage weeds and new green growth
Beef kidneys work the best I'd say

The bait shops don't take the blood suckers so I really don't know if they would work. I am guessing they don't work or someone would be using them.

Where can you get the aluminum to build those traps?
Roofing supply places you can buy it by the roll used to make fascia and soffits.
Can you catch leeches in ponds where there are minnows? I have tried 4 different ponds so far and mostly caught medicine leeches and bloodsuckers. In about a week of trapping, I only caught 4 ribbon leeches.

At some ponds but not all, have good success at beaver ponds along the road for both, at some small lakes not worth it for leeches. We are noticing the type of bottom in the pond makes a difference.
