Worked perfectly. Took about 20 minutes. Thanks. PS I discovered that the glue used to hold the aluminum to the battery case can be reactivated using a blow dryer. It warms up nicely and get sticky again. The aluminum will hold enough heat long enough to reattach it. Sweeeet!
I too had same problem, batteries leaked. Cleaned battery compartment/conductors as much as I could but no luck. I wanted to take it apart as last resort but had no idea how to until I discovered your video. I opened it and cleaned battery conductor, installed new batteries and walaa!! It worked. Mouse is bit loose but with some glue I'll be all right. Thanks for sharing the video, Phillip.
taurustan Isopropyl alcohol is better for electronics, white spirit can leave a residue. I'd say it's only necessary if you disassemble the mouse to this extent and clean actual circuitry
Danke, du bist einfach der beste. Ich hab nach so einer Anleitung gesucht. In der Mitte vom Video hab ich erst gemerkt, dass es von Philip Dorset ist.👍🏻
I fixed my magic mouse too, but I didn't use the double sided tape. To those who are fixing their magic mouse as well... I felt that there was enough adhesive on the aluminum case to keep the parts together; it all worked fine.
I just took mine apart. I bought one from Newegg and the battery leaked out. Don’t know why they shipped it with preinstalled batteries. Will update if it worked as I am heading to work. Thanks for the video man!
Whew! I broke the little tabs on the runners, broke my nails trying to separate the plastic from the aluminum casing and only managed to left up one end but couldn't get it separated. I had cleaned the contacts, tried various new batteries and was about to toss the brat across the room but tried a Hail Mary pass, one last attempt, by placing little squares of foil on the negative ends of the batteries. Tried turning it on after all the frustrations and and abuse, and gasped! It bloody works again!! Folks try foil first.
This just saved my magic mouse. Thanks for the howto. Went ahead and cleaned mine with just the vinegar, can't find any white spirit left, it works though.
Very useful but I am struggling to plug it back again. Could you give more details about how to flip down the lock? Where is it or how it looks would be very helpful. Thanks
Very few of the magic mouses has these LONG RIBBON cables once opened. Most of them are way shorter. If you lose the connection - it will disconnect by itself - then it will be impossible to get back properly again, without special tools. That's why Apple wants you to leave it to them to fix which will probably cost as much as a new mouse. I've seen this on 6 of 10 mice. Those I've encountered has way too short yellow ribbon cables, that will not reach the contact until you close down the shell almost like a cars hood. They have deliberately made them shorter so that once disconnected, it won't ever re-connect with your ordinary home tools. You can even break it while disconnecting (or trying to) because you can't reach into the flip to unlock it with no matter how small screwdriver you own. That someone was lucky and got the older mouses with long ribbon cable, sure, no big problem. But most of us can't properly do this. I had to open up mine once I dropped it, and heard something rattling inside. Once opened up I saw that the metallic "ears" that are held down by the 3 screws was broken and a splinter of it had found its way deeper into the internals making it short out ever so often, when the metallic splinter came in contact with something that leads current. Sorry, but that mouse was gone, I had to spend (read:waste) on a new one. Just a year and half old. Just a caveat emptor. Warning. Be vigiliant and careful. Once "opening the hood" take a good look at the ribbon, to eye measure it, and by that you can determine if you can get it back again. If not, close it, assemble the rest of it, and leave it in to someone who has that gear to a) clean it b) open it up c) do repair. If they tell you to buy a new mouse, politely tell them to go pound sand, and move on.
These directions were fairly straight forward and easy to follow. However, my mouse looked as if it had been part of the last ice age with the amount of corrosion on it and so pieces did not want to come off easily. The parts were practically fused together so taking it apart wasn't smooth. I am pretty sure I completely killed it when the tiny fragile ribbon ripped off when trying to separate the electronics. Thank goodness I have another mouse.
Thanks for your video, i dropped my mouse and lost all gestures, i was able to safely disassemble it and turns out the cable became unattached, so i reinserted it and relocked it and now it works!!
I have a mouse of those and I pass the same, it pumps the batteries and covers everything that can be seen as seen in the video, the problem is that after assembling it, the mouse turns on but the fringe does not move .. The rest works perfectly, the touch works just like the button and connects to the PC without problems but the arrow does not move and when you turn to put your finger on the reader the green LED does not turn off ... that the optical reader burned ??? What do you think about ....?
Mine is worked too. Thanks a lot. I used synthetic thinner instead of white spirit (or these are equal things I don't know) and I used white vinegar because it doesn't smell too much.
I failed. Failure came from following steps at 1:13. The aluminum piece is only held on by super strong tape. Over-bent the aluminum fighting against the tape, and now it won't go back together properly & no tape I can find is strong enough to hold it in place.
The fragile ribbon clip broke on mine when i was gently trying to pull the top out of the circular clips.. i had a lot of acid all around the clip and the circuit board.. affecting the coatings.. once the clip broke there was no point continuing.. Dont use cheap generic batteries in a pinch, and than store it for a couple years in tropical heat.. They do leak so much worse than respected brand name batteries..
Mine dropped out of my pocket this morning and dented quite badly. I opened it as per your video and managed to fix the dent. The tracking seems to be affected now. Any ideas on how to fix it? I suspect the optics got damaged.
Great video, sort of saved mine. I managed to get it to work again but I lost the use of the scroll feature on the top of the mouse. Oh well, I bought the Magic Mouse 2 that is rechargeable so no more battery explosions.
In my case, the compartment door is stuck. Even moving the black hinge nothing happens. I sprayed some wd40 on the hinge but nothing, Is it a gonner? Any ideas?
Thanks, mine still kinda works, but it intermittently drops the connection, it's a power issue as the light goes out on the bottom. Only started following a minor battery leak, so I'll try this and see if it saves it. Otherwise I'll smash it with an axe, expensive piece of junk.
Hey I got a magic mouse that connects to bluetooth ok, clicks and scrolls as per normal, but won't track or move the cursor. I've stripped it apart, cleaned the insides, and put it back together but it didn't solve anything. Any idea what's wrong?
Philip makes it look all too easy. Eg. @ 1:15, I had to pry open the aluminium cover as it was super glued to the mouse housing. Pressing with your thumbs at the battery compartment will not remove the cover. Anyway, after spending almost 2 hrs, and cleaning every possible nook, the mouse was still dead. Will send it for cremation & let both myself and the mouse R.I.P. Nonetheless, appreciate and thanks for putting up the video guide. At least you saved some lives.
Dude great work it worked it for me ..I faced the same problem but thanks to u I saved my magic mouse ...great work ...just keep doing this great things ....👍👍
OK, great video, saved mine... well at least a part of it... scroll and swipe functions not working because I broke the clip of the ribbon cable. Is there any solution????
Yours may be the newer version of the magic mouse which has an ion battery inside that cannot be replaced meaning Apple sold you an $8 device for $90 and now you have to throw it out and buy a new one. The mouse in this video is an older version.
Good tutorial. My magic mouse has sat on a shelf for the last few years. In hindsight, I should have sold it as they are still stupidly expensive for what they are. I reverted to using a wired mouse as it got annoying for me using the magic mouse on my iMac and then reverting to a regular mouse on my laptop. What can I say, I get confused easily!
@@nathaliafernandes3945 hi nath, no i didnt but i figure out that there was some dirt in between the lego that connects the circuit... i mean... you need special tools for fixing that. Had to buy another one.
@@nathaliafernandes3945 well... in reality you have to open the mouse, and breaking its componets is at stake since you have to tear some pieces apart... the lego is beneath the pad where you place your hand, and it is attached to the main board, it's complex, not impossible but at least for me it was frustrating.
5:35 is the game of the show. my cursor was stuck fkn dismantle the mouse did nothing in and decide to mount and retry the it goes . now i am losing it all because of the nap
I was doing fine until I got to the ribbon part! I tried for hours to release the clip that hold the ribbon (I couldn't even find the clip) eventually in my struggle I managed to break off the tiny black bar from the top of the clip holder. so it is now a completely dead mouse :-(
So helpful!! You just saved me 100 quid! Thankfully I didn't have to do all of these steps as cleaning the barrel was enough. Seriously, thank you SO MUCH!!
I would let you know on secret liquid usually does NOT flow up by itself (there is exactly one liquid which does flow up, but it need surface on which it will flow up and extreme cold like 3K and it is helium) you do not need to clean surface which cannot get any electrolyte (no matter if it is acid or alkaline)
I think mine is wrecked beyond fixing. I feel its getting a bit warm at the bottom left corner. Probably something shorting there.. Well the thing is from mid 2009 so its was quite old
PS you dont need to cut those parts off from the battery connector. If you wiggle out the 2 bottom pins out first. Then you can slide the board off to the side. Gettng those corner screw with the clamps back on was a bit finnicky. But in the end nothing. I hoped perhaps the short would go away, still gets a bit warm so i guess a bad component.
PS its easier to get those bottom battery connectors out by using a small flat head and pull them back from the inside. Pushing them through those holes wasnt working for me
I wouldn't recommend trying to get that little strip back in when you have terrible eyesight and really bad hand tremors xD I've been trying to get the dang thing in for an hour and a half.

Thank you. I actually got it to work again without disassembly, I just cleaned the contacts with vinegar.

My husband to me to tell you that your video was very good, clear and precise and it worked. thank you.

That was such a helpful comment. I was wondering if mine, which has been being corroded for a year now, would be salvageable. It seems it is.
Same here, hahaha
WOW. It did worked for me. I was about to trash the mouse and my son just told me to give a try on cleaning it. Thank you so much.
How do I open the clip that holds the cable in place (2:43)?
Thank you for your tutorial!! It worked like a charm & I did not have to buy a new one!! Rock on:)🎉
Thank you! As a broke college student there was no way I was going to be able to afford another magic mouse lol Another life saved!
+Chris Lofholm This is what the video is for! Good luck with your studies!
Any idea how to fix a non moving cursor? It works intermittently, but after it stops working sometimes it doesn't work for a couple of days.
I'd love to try it but I can't figure out how to open the battery compartment, apparently the battery leak damaged the area and it's suck.. Any ideas?
